Exclusive: Andrew Stanton confirms John Carter of Mars

Andrew Stanton personally confirmed for me and others attending today's WALL-E roundtable in Toronto that he is currently writing the film version of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars for Pixar.

The disclosure came at the end of the short, but extremely enjoyable, discussion (excerpts of which will be published here soon), when a writer from Suite101.com asked about Stanton's next project, to which Stanton mentioned (not too loudly) "John Carter of Mars".

Doubting what I'm hearing, I interject, "What is that?" "John Carter of Mars", Stanton replies. "You're confirming John Carter? Are you serious?" At this point, I turn my tape recorder back on: "Say that on tape!". Stanton: "I am writing John Carter of Mars right now." Me: "Oh man, you just doubled my page views!". Everybody laughs.

No details on the film just yet, but somehow the fact that Stanton is writing has quelled most of my doubts about the till-now rumoured project.

Some bragging here: Stanton also told me that he reads The Pixar Blog often. (Couldn't believe it!) He also reads Upcoming Pixar, and is wondering as to why Luxo hasn't posted in a while :)

Sorry, but it would be so kind if you could answer with "yes" or "no"

Is WALL-E amazing?

Looking forward to "John Carter of Mars", too, but I can't imagine how Pixar could work that one out.

Oh, that's interesting!! Two sci-fi movies in a row (for aNDREW).
Was this confirmed at the press conference after WALL-E? Any other sources.
P.S. Did he say it's going to be with Pixar, or a co-production like with 1906?

That's it ? More to come ?

You can't even hint where you scooped this ? ( Which as already a strong supposition ) Some secret meeting in the SF section of a used bookstore, around the letter 'B' for Burroughs ?

I'm wondering, did he say it was for Pixar, or did he say he was just writing it, I'd edit teh article unless he said so for sure, I'm still VERY excited...

Okay, I've added all the details of the announcement to the post.

The version you saw earlier was just something I typed up in a real hurry at a very busy Apple Store!

In response to your question, Yes.

Fantastic, I can't wait. Did he say it would be animated?

You're officially my favorite blogger, and this is the best blog. I can't thank you enough for being so awesome!

Granted, WALL-E is amazing, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and ask... Is it your favorite? Which circle of heaven are you in?

And Andrew Stanton's a nerd like us. Of course he checks up here(and boosts the hype!).

At the risk of sounding like a complete and utter Pixar nerd, I think it is friggin' SWEET that Andrew reads this blog.

That's all I needed to hear. Thank you. :)

Ethan: As I wrote, no details were discussed. However, A.S. did say earlier in the conversation that he 'caught the bug' when it comes to live-action filmmaking.

FunnyGirl/Sarah: Thanks so much for the support. I'm glad you enjoy reading the blog.

About WALL-E, no more questions please. I agreed not to talk about the film until the 27th and I intend to keep my word.

aCooper2: "friggin' SWEET" it is!

Tannenschnaps: You're welcome.

You never answered though, did he specifically say the film will be produced by Pixar?

MB1000 said...

That's how it came across. He's under contract with Pixar so at the very least it would be a Pixar co-production.

great news. I hope this is live-action.... if Pixar do it as animation of course it will be amazing... but there would still remain the desire for someone to recreate this world in a live-action film. Only then would we feel that the series had truly been realised.

As I understand it ( with contacts with Edgar Rice Burroughs inc. ) it's PIxar and LIVE ACTION.

Thanks so much for posting this! I was digging around on the internet after I read this and found a site that reported Stanton visited the Burroughs' Library with none other than Mark Andrews the head of story on the Incredibles. I think the same site also reported they were eyeing a trilogy of films! I personally couldn't think of someone more qualified for the head of story position than Mandrews!

Venusian said...

DO you know how this works ? Head of story, then Screenplay ?

Okay, okay, I just hope you don't combust with all those Pixar secrets inside your head. And this is the definitely your highest comment tally! We should really keep it up just out of respect to your generous information feed!

That's right: Another record breaker!

This is fantastic news...

Any word on who's directing? Is it Jon Favreau?

It'd be awesome if he could take his increased bankability in the wake of Iron Man to tackle what he'd previously cited as a film he wanted to do very badly...

MB1000 said...

Jon Favreau? What? Why?

Dominic von Riedemann said...

Hello, I'm Dominic von Riedemann from Suite 101, and I'm the writer who asked Andrew Stanton whether or not he was working on John Carter of Mars.

Jon Favreau will NOT be involved in this movie, since he was going to direct the ill-fated Paramount adaptation, and Paramount declined to renew their option. My guess is that, based on Stanton's previous track record, that he will not only write this adaptation, but also direct it as well.

For more information, you can click here

P.S. - Thanks for crediting me in the story, MB. ;)

Oh, okay that makes sense that JF is out considering it's with a different studio... didn't think of that.

I loved those books and I hope this project will come to fruition.

Stanton taking the reigns in addition to penning the script makes sense given his CV.

I think this project is in good hands, he seems like a smart guy.

I just hope they pick the right guy for the role of John Carter.

*cough*Tom Welling*cough*

I know this is days and days after the fact, but if you're still trying to get the audio off the recorder a great way is to get the speaker wire that connects into your computer (if it is a 2 sided male audio jack, that is, and doesn't plug in directly to the computer) and plug one end into the headphone jack and the other into the mic jack on your computer. Get Audacity, install it and then open a new file and hit record. Hit play on the spot where you want to record on the microcassette recorder. Voila!

What I liked about the Burroughs book was that on Mars both John Carter and the main babe spent their entire time stark naked. I hope the film will strictly adhere to this crucial aspect of the story.

First time blogger but long long time fan of the john carter series. I can remember as a child staying up all night to finish them. What a delima for the filmakers:they want box office and to presumably create a franchise of films, but how will they maintain the integrity of the books? I personally hope its a combination of live action and animation. I hope they come close to the making the look of the film resemble the book covers. So not too science fiction with the vehicles those "flying boats" from the pictures on the covers and some type of "arabian" style dress for the characters. My pick for Deja Thoris...the most beautiful woman of my childhood...I always pictured her as exotic so my vote would be Rosalind Sanchez!! :)
