'Cars 2' to be released in 2011 [UPDATE]

Major development here: Cars 2 will be released to theatres in the summer of 2011, one year earlier than its previously planned release date of Summer 2012, Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter announced at the Walt Disney Studios Showcase media presentation held today at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Lasseter is quoted as saying that Pixar's animators are working 'around the clock' to bring the movie to the big screen sooner than originally planned.

At today's presentation, Lasseter revealed a little bit more of the story, saying that it will involve Mater "getting his passport" as he and Lightning McQueen travel around the world. Also, it was announced that a series of animated shorts featuring the characters of Cars, "Cars Toons", are being produced by Pixar . The shorts are to air online, on the Disney Channel, and possibly theatrically in front of Disney movies.

Most amazing in all of this is that 2011 was already planned to be the first year ever to feature two Pixar releases: Newt and The Bear and the Bow, in the summer and winter respectively. So does this mean we'll be seeing three (!) movies from Pixar in one year, two in the summer? Or will Newt or 'Bow' be bumped to 2012, the boring and predictable option? If it's the former, holy smokes! Be sure to comment below...

Update: /Film reports that indeed the plan is for Newt to be bumped to Summer 2012, thereby filling up the slot left open
after the move of Cars 2
to Summer 2011. Oh well... :(

For the purpose of refreshing memories, Newt will tell the story of the last male and female blue-footed newts on Earth –Newt and Brooke– who must mate or else the species will be wiped out. The problem? They happen to hate each other's guts.

Question: Why is nobody commenting?

What I wouldn't give to see three Pixar movies in one year! Waiting a year between each one is getting tedious. Still, if they could make a better movie by leaving it for 2012, I would have them delay it. If anyone can do it, though, it's Pixar. Props to them.

P.S. Sorry for the late posting. As our President might say, life can be a busy place.

For me, I'm just a quiet subscriber... But I do love your blog! I LOVE Pixar movies, so to be updated on anything Pixar is really fun! I loved the first Cars, everything about it! So I'm really excited about the sequel. That is really amazing with all the movies they're working on, they must be working their tails off...

well, I wasn't nuts about Cars, didn't have the "Nemo-charm" that sold me like dory did.

Be nice to see a Monster inc. 2 or a Toy Story 3 in there somewhere.

Keep up the good work :)

I wonder what they're going to do now that Paul Newman has left us.

I know who will play the voice of doc now????? He was my favorite character in cars. :(

Back in June, Lasseter told MTV that Doc would be part of the film, but that they'd "wait and see".

What I'd suspect is that since everyone was aware that Newman was ill, plans would have been put in place story-wise so that unfortunatly the character wouldn't really be part of the story. (Shouldn't be too hard to do, considering the movie's set in Europe.)

As for now, maybe we'll see a flashback scene where McQueen is traveling/whatever and remembers all friends he made back in Rad. Springs, including Doc, or something along those lines. That wouldn't require any new voice work or the most terrible option of "killing" the character.

What are you gonna do with Doc Hudson since Paul Newman died on Friday? Are you gonna get a new dude to voice Doc, or are you gonna scrap him? Please bring Doc back! Him and Lightning are my favorite characters.
