'Bugs' and 'Monsters' Blu-ray details [UPDATE]

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed a release date and details for the highly anticipated debut of Pixar's A Bug's Life and Monsters, Inc. on the Blu-ray Disc high-definition home video format.

Both titles (Region 1) will be sold starting May 19. A Bug's Life is reported to be coming one disc only, while due to space requirements, Monsters, Inc. will be on two discs, the second disc (a DVD) containing a DisneyFile digital copy. There are conflicting reports about this; both may end up as two-disc releases.

The 'Bug's Life' Blu-ray will showcase exclusives such as:
  • An introduction by director John Lasseter
  • A roundtable with Lasseter, co-director Andrew Stanton, and producers Darla Anderson and Kevin Reher
  • Animated storyboards
  • BD-Live features

The Monsters, Inc. Blu-ray will feature an exclusive roundtable with director Pete Docter, co-director Lee Unkrich, producer Darla Anderson, and story supervisor (also the voice of Roz) Bob Peterson. Also included will be an interactive game and BD-Live stuff.

In addition to the above, both Blu-rays "will include all the features" that can be found on the currently available DVD releases.

No technical specifications have yet been released, but expect the best in picture and sound, just as with the WALL-E Blu-ray (read more).

This version adds details and caveat to correction that only the Monsters, Inc. Blu-ray will be a two-disc set.

So, since these films were not originally rendered at 1080i quality, are they being re-rendered for this release? Only Cars, Ratatouille, and Wall-E were 1080 quality.

whoa! very excited about this news! so is the "animated storyboards" on a bug's life release the "animated version" of a bug's life's first draft i just heard about? hmmm...

What makes you think that?

All movies are rendered in high def, even higher than 1080p usually. the only one that might not have been rendered that high was the original Toy Story, which as we already know is being re rendered anyhow.

even more exciting, then! so, if i'm not mistaken, "the first draft" is when they had an ant named "red" as the main character... will love to see it just to compare red to flik!
oh, & i'm a big fan of the pixar roundtables!! awesome =)

Protip: DVDs have Region numbers. Blu-ray has Region letters.

According to what I know, and have learned listening to various interviews and commentaries, Toy Story was re-rendered for the 10 year anniversary DVD release. As I understand it, they didn't have good quality digital files, only film transfers, so the colors and dynamic range weren't as pristine. I remember them talking about the technical problems of opening the old files, and finding old computers that would run them. It, and all subsequent films, were most definitely rendered in (at least) full 2K film resolution (2048 × 1556), so higher that 1080. The more recent ones might even have been rendered in 4K (4096 x 3112)
