Hollywood news and gossip site Deadline Hollywood Daily reported yesterday that Peter Gabriel will not be performing "Down to Earth" —his Oscar-nominated song from WALL-E— at the Academy Awards later this month due to a dispute with the show's producers. And now it's confirmed.Gabriel, who issued a statement explaining his decision, is upset that the producers offered to allot only 60-65 seconds of a planned medley to each of the three nominated songs, this apparently to shorten the length of the Oscars show. The producers counter that 90 seconds were offered. No word yet on how, or even if, the song will be performed now.
Gabriel says he still "very much look[s] forward to attending the ceremony."

A medley! The only reason I was going to watch the Oscars this year was to see Peter Gabriel perform THE WHOLE SONG! This is insulting! Cut the speeches, not the music! As a viewer, I'd appreciate the producers keeping in the things I actually want to see. Gabriel did the right thing. A medley... what a disgrace.
I don't blame him. A medley of the nominated songs sounds like a terrible idea in the first place.
A medley would be terrible indeed. I just hope The Academy won't take this into account when voting, given how political they can be.
Such an insult! I hope they let him perfom the hole song, after reconsider it. It is a so wonderful song like just to hear 60 seconds.
Cut the speeches?
They need to cut the best picture clip segments and comedy fluff before they cut the whole reason for the show -- giving out awards.
The music is nice, but the whole song ain't necessary.
What you want to see and what I want to see are very different.
