A Bug's Life on Blu-ray Hi-Def

Pixar's second, often overlooked, masterpiece A Bug's Life, directed by John Lasseter with co-director Andrew Stanton, finally makes its debut on high definition Blu-ray Disc next week on Tuesday, May 19.

As with previous Pixar titles on Blu-ray, the picture and sound quality sets the standard for what a release on the format should be, resulting in gushing reviews from enthusiasts, like this one at Blu-ray.com. Additionally, the packaging and printing on the discs (yes, a standard definition digital copy comes in the package) gets an A+.

Features

The main disc includes an exclusive introduction by John Lasseter, a "filmmakers' roundtable" with Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and producers Darla Anderson and Kevin Reher, animated storyboards from the original story treatment —"A Bug's Life: The First Draft"— and a lot more, including all the bonus material found on the previously released 'Bug's Life' DVD and several Blu-ray-exclusive capablilities.

Technical specifications (Region free Blu-ray disc only)

  • Video: 1080p high definition in widescreen, 2.35:1. Bonus features in 1080p and 480i

  • Sound: 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital 5.1 (English, French, and Spanish tracks)

  • Subtitles: English, French, and Spanish

Looks great! If I ever find myself visiting a friend with a Blu-Ray player, I'll be sure to rent this title.

Actually, I never overlooked A Bug's Life--it's better then the original Toy Story. I'm serious.

Upcoming Pixar now reports that Up has ONE HUNDRED PERCENT on Rotten Tomatoes--more then Star Trek's 96 percent! I'm serious again. No joke. Don't believe me? Go to Upcoming Pixar yourself.

I need to buy this. I also need to buy a blu-ray player. That means I need money... [starts planning elaborate bank heist]

PixarFanatic: About Up's Rotten Tomatoes score, it's still too early to call. Only a handful of reviews have been counted by the site (all of which have been positive).

You'll be getting Tomatometer coverage here in the coming weeks closer to Up's release date.

I agree about it being too early to call, but I am sure that Up will remain in the high 90's once all of the 250 or so reviews are all in.

Star Trek, (which is now at 95% with 244 reviews, [233 fresh, 11 rotten]), held the 100% spot for quite a while there too, well past 20 reviews. Up is at 11 reviews currently, so it will be in the coming week that we should get a better picture from the Cannes Film Festival.

Interestingly enough, currently both Star Trek and Up have an average rating of 8.1/10. We gave Star Trek an average of four stars, and I am sure that Up will be the same. From what I can tell right now, it looks amazing. The fact that it has a PG rating makes me all the more excited for it.
