The Wall Street Journal has a brief, but outstanding, interview with Edward Asner (above center), the voice of Up's leading man, Carl Fredricksen.Asner, who at age 78 is about the same age as Carl, says he's "most pleased" to be part of Up, having "found [the] ideas and thoughts [present in the movie] more provoking and longer lasting than any live action film [he's] seen in a long time".

Seperately, in a new Boston Globe piece about Up, which includes plenty of dialogue from Asner and director Pete Docter, Asner calls Docter "a genius", mentioning that he has "enormous affection and admiration for him".

Actually, if you read the full article, he applies those thoughts to WALL-E:
"In a way, “WALL-E” had some of the same disturbing elements that “Up” does. I was amazed at the application [of “WALL-E”] to our lives and I found ideas and thoughts more provoking and longer lasting than any live action film I’ve seen in a long time."
He's saying Up has many of the same elements and I'm sure he's equally complimentary, but the quote in your summary is taken out of context a bit.
