The Vancouver studio will focus only on the production of Pixar's short films and other non-feature projects based for the most part on "legacy characters", such as the characters of Toy Story.
"The operation will be small in size and dedicated to producing short-form quality computer animation for theme parks, DVDs, television and theatrical exhibition... for several different divisions of The Walt Disney Company", Pixar president Ed Catmull tells The Hollywood Reporter. The studio plans to hire between 75 and 100 employees, mostly Canadian, for the job, according to general manger Jim Morris.
Amir Nasrabadi, current vice-president of operations and finance at Disney's direct-to-video sequel outfit DisneyToon Studios, has been picked to be the general manager of the Vancouver operation. Pixar animator Dylan Brown, supervising animator on Ratatouille and Finding Nemo, will be the local creative director.
Vancouver was chosen for several reasons, including its location and time zone (near to and same as Emeryville, respectively), the tax incentives provided by the Province of British Columbia, and other factors, such as the abundant talent located in the area.
Let me just say, this is huge. Huge. It's incredible to see Pixar expanding this way. And to Canada, eh! Now, if they would've only picked Toronto, I'd be preparing to camp out at the proposed location with a sign reading "WILL WORK FOR FOOD".

It will be amazing! I'm so glad they picked Vancouver, no offense! But at least it's a start for Canada.. Maybe they will open one back East as well :)
This IS great news alright. Given there's so many great talents in Sheridan and VFS, this is GREAT!!!
Too bad they will only be hiring mostly Canadians, considering a foreigner like myself is having a tough time already getting a job in US.. Still, it's always great to hear about a company expanding. Thank you for the update!!!
Super Cool news!
I'm close to Canada, lol!
More local to the Vancouver studio than the Emeryville one... but not a true Canadian.. shoot :(
haha, but still awesome news!
GAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! THIS IS INSANE!!!!!!
I'm in Vancouver!! Wow-ee wow-ee wow wow!! I gotta speed up my 3D demo!!
That is amazing! I hope they will not expand "too much" and loose their control over the movies and their creativity.
By the way, I'll be coming with you from Paris for the camp ^^

This is kind of off topic... but Mike, do you want to see the new Star Trek movie that opens today? I saw it last night and they played the Up trailer! Star Trek was excellent, too!
Hopefully they'll be in Chicago soon?! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
As an animator working in Vancouver, this is unreal. I can't wait for them to open up the studio here! It's pretty exciting having your dream job come to your city. I'll be applying as soon as they accept applications.
i think anything positive for pixar rules. expand, expand, expand, by all means! only problem...wish they had something for the die hard, future animators of pixar out here on the east coast!
Dangit, when I heard Vancouver I thought Washington, which I can easily drive to from here.
Then again, moving to Canada to work at Pixar could be fun. They DO have free health care.
Are there postings for jobs yet? I guess it might be too early yet.
Let us know when someone finds job postings! I'm a Canadian animator that just moved to Vancouver. Thanks!
Pls..Think abt India we hv also tallents...
Oh wow. I may only be 15, but I am an avid Pixar fanatic and a proud Vancouverite, so this blows me away! Hoping they'll be in Vancouver proper and not Richmond/Coquitlam/North Vancouver/etc. Though where in Vancouver they could find the space for such a big building I'll never know. In short: WHOOPEE!
i don't understand why they can't hire talents from all around the world and not just canada, no offense meant...
Yay! I did my M.Ed. in Animation in Art Education! This is so great...a dream come true and just proves that animation is really the BIG "A" in the arts...incorporating everything from music to performance to 2-D and 3-D! Yayyyyyyy!
The Hollywod Reporter link isn't working for me. Is it still citeable?
I'm in Vancouver....as canadian resident..can't wait... would love to work at Pixar...fingers crosesd
