Just heard about this: Comedian Stephen Colbert mentioned Up and WALL-E on Monday's episode of The Colbert Report, listing Up as a "bright spot" among his list of "Movies That Are Destroying America —Summer Movie Edition".He joked that Up's story —an elderly man floating away using balloons— "presents a fantastic solution to [America's] Social Security problem". Colbert went on to jest about the perception that Up does not present a good merchandising opportunity, quipping, "What kid wouldn't want to play with a 78-year-old man action figure? You can make him do all sorts of fun things. Like sitting..."
The complete clip is available on the web at Comedy Central (U.S.) and the Comedy Network (Canada). The Up/WALL-E sketch can be found at minute 2:50 of the clip (clip 2 of 4 if watching the full episode).

Aww.... what a waste of a good WALL-E toy... LOL
If he "only saw the trailer" for Up, how does he know that it's going to be a bad movie? How do you know if any movie is good or bad until you see it? (Call me crazy,) I admit I've been a little skeptical about Up, but I still want to see it. Pixar's never let me down before.
Anonymous, it's the Colbert Report. Not Nightline. I really doubt he was being serious.
Thanks for sharing Colbert's joke ... it's hilarious! I think any feature film that has a senior as its central character will always be a magnet for jokes on prime time television. Kudos to Pixar for going boldly where others fear to tread ... it's why they're so successful! For me, it's not the age of the central character that matters (I've seen way too many mediocre films that feature younger stars in the main roles), it's the quality of the story that makes or breaks the film. I can't wait to see Up ... I know it'll be great!
