Beauty and the Beast in 3-D

Just to let everyone know that I'm guesting again at The Disney Blog with a short post about the exciting upcoming digital 3-D re-release of Disney's classic Beauty and the Beast, out February 12 next year.

As a matter of fact, I'm going to be covering the re-release for The Disney Blog in the coming months as a regular guest author, and will be posting on general topics early next month when editor John Frost goes on vacation.

It's easy to understand how "Toy Story" can be converted to a 3D movie. But how do you convert conventional animation like "Beauty and the Beast" without the result looking like a bad Viewmaster slide? This I'll believe when I see it.

Will you be reviewing other Disney films for the Disney Blog? What about Ponyo? That has connections to Pixar and Disney!

Mark, I'm skeptic too, however John says they've been working to make sure they don't get that viewmaster effect (they actually call it that). somehow their using 3d geometry and projecting the layers so they wrap around them. everyone whos seen it says it looks great, but we'll just have to wait and see for ourselves.

On a more random note, Unkrich says on twitter that they just had Tim Allan come in for a recording sesion for Toy Story 3, and that their almost done with everyone for the whole movie.

Been a slow week Mike. Still, this is pretty exciting -- Beatuy and the Beat was one of my favorite movies when I was little. :D Agreed, how are they going to convert it to 3-D naturally? Granted Disney has all the money in the world to have people tweak things until they're just right, but...

Mark, Kyle, and Leirin: You guys aren't the only ones doubting that the film (which happens to be one of my Disney favourites) is going to look good in digital 3-D.

There are a lot of skeptics out there. Who will be proven wrong soon enough :)

If 3D experts say it looks awesome, than it looks awesome. I predict a trailer for it with the TS1/TS2 double-bill. BatB is a Disney masterpiece, and the only animated film to be nominated for Best Picture. When it was released in IMAX a while ago people were blown away by the ballroom dancing scene. People will be blown away again in 3D, hopefully it will be in IMAX 3D. Disney would never release a cheap looking print of one of their finest achievements.

Master Shifu, a voice of reason.

Mike, do you know if they will be including the "Human Again" sequence? I think it would be a shame if that wasn't in there simply because it wasn't part of the original theatrical release. And like Master Shifu said, I think IMAX 3D should be an option for moviegoers.

(By the way Master Shifu, thanks for visiting us and offering your wisdom.)
