'Up' Oscar campaign begins

The Walt Disney Studios' campaign promoting Up as a contender for the Academy Award for Best Picture at the next Oscars started this week. Disney is beginning to run ads (see below for example) in online and print film industry publications and have updated the Disney Studios Awards website –aimed at Academy voters– accordingly.

Of course, Pixar's tenth feature is also being offered 'for consideration' in all Oscar categories including the following:
  • Best Animated Feature
  • Best Director
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Art Direction
  • Best Sound Mixing
  • Best Sound Editing
  • Best Original Score

Theatrical short Partly Cloudy is being advertised less-specifically "For Your Consideration in All Categories", though in actuality it only stands the chance of being nominated for Best Animated Short Film –still a very big deal.

Up's chances of being nominated for Best Picture are higher than any of Pixar's previous animated masterpieces due to this year's rule change which will see ten Best Picture nominees rather than the longstanding five.

The 82nd annual Academy Awards take place on Sunday, March 7, 2010. Nominations will be announced just under three months from now on Tuesday, February 2.

I think this is INCREDIBLY exciting; however I do have a concern that votes will get split, and the film will lose both. Up is one of the greatest films ever, in my opinion, and I think it has a chance of even winning Best Picture, but if it's nominated for both, I sure hope the Academy doesn't accidentally snub it.

Up should when on all counts (as well as should Partly Cloudy!), a truly remarkable achievment!

And yes, I know sound like a fanboy, that's because I am. ;)

Gosh, it deserves a win in all those categories. Especially art direction, I'd say.

Hopefully, Ponyo and Princess and the Frog will do well too ;)

That picture of Carl holding an Oscar is really good! And it gave me another idea! Can you find a screenshot from the scene where Carl thinks he sees a man (behind Dug's voice) but it turns out to be a rock? That "man-rock" looks a lot like an Oscar statuette before the camera angle on it changes.

And yes, I'm stoked about this news of a possible Best Picture nomination.

I don't really see how it cannot get a nomination this year; however, I am a bit disappointed that none of Pixar's films got in when there were just five slots.

Glad you liked it! Like I did last year with WALL-E, my plan is to have new 'photoshops' for most future posts on the subject.

Until it was mentioned, I had never clicked the picture big, and thus not realized that you had pasted an Oscar into Carl's hand! That's kind of funny actually! ;)

UP Should win it all! Ok, maybe not, but it better get an Oscar in at least one or I will be mad. Up is to good not to get an Oscar!

Hey yeah! The "Spirit of Adventure" song was pretty good. Does it deserve an award?

I was heartbroken last year when Wall-E was snubbed by the academy. "Best Animated Feature" Oh please! Wall-e deserved to win everything it was nominated for as well as Best Picture.
I feel like Disney bailed when it came to marketing Wall-E to the academy. For films to win Oscars it's more of a contest of "which studio can spend the most money on ads in Variety" than a contest of the best film. Disney's promotion was half-hearted at best.
Up deserves to win just like Wall-E did but now I'm trying not to get my hopes up.
