Dinosaur concept art in new photo [3 UPDATES]

Fellow Pixar news blog Pixar Talk obtained this new photo screenshot, from a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Up, that gives us a clearer look at that "very intriguing" Pixar concept art of a boy and a dinosaur we first saw last August. It was sent to Pixar Talk anonymously.

Up production designer Ricky Nierva and another Pixarian are pictured standing in front of the artwork in what we know is the workspace of character sculptor and production designer Greg Dykstra.

More artwork is visible than in the Up B-roll screenshot and that includes what appear to be early 3D models of some characters, including a giant mosquito-like insect, a crocodile, and a pterosaur.

My money is on this being for the short film set to be attached to Toy Story 3. That this picture is making it's way online now is surely no accident, with June 18 only four months away. We usually learn about and get official confirmation of short films a couple of months before release.

That this is concept art for an as-yet announounced feature film seems most unlikely at this point. For further analysis, read the original post on this story from last year.
----
Update: /Film reports that an anonymous source contacted them and "confirmed" that the artwork is for an upcoming short film from Pixar entitled Night and Day, almost certain to be the short attached to Toy Story 3.

The tipster claims that the film's director is Pixar character designer Teddy Newton, who worked on The Incredibles and Presto. (My all-time favourite piece of Pixar concept art is Newton's "The Jumper" for The Incredibles.) If true, this would be the first time Newton has directed a film at the studio.

/Film points out that the title Night and Day also mysteriously appears on an unofficial Michael Giacchino fan site as a 2010 animated short directed by Teddy Newton for which Giacchino will be composing music.

Naturally, this info is far from being actually confrmed. But it is one of the more believable rumors. One of the first things on my agenda right now is to check with the owner of the Giacchino fan site as to where they got the title Night and Day.
----
Update: The short film attached to Toy Story 3 is entitled Day & Night, directed by Teddy Newton, with music by Michael Giacchino. But it has nothing to do with dinosaurs, pterodactyls, or any other prehistoric creatures. Read further here.

That being the case, it's now a serious possibility that the boy/dinosaur project is a feature, not a short. It could be Pete Docter's secret 2013/2014 project, perhaps with Greg Dykstra as co-director.

Could be the short film attached to TS3, but it looks like it more has the scope of a feature. I don't know why, there's just something about. Perhaps it's the film that will take Newt's place, if it indeed is "dead"?

I do agree that it has more of the scope of a feature. There seem to be more characters than just a short would have...

Now, who would direct - Pete Docter? Ronnie del Carmen? Bob Dykstra?

Wow, if it is a feature film it would make sense because pixar have done:

Toys
Bugs
Monsters
fish
superheroes
cars
rats
robots
humans-up? (dogs,birds etc)

now... dinosaurs!

Seems like something Pete Docter might do, but my money's on Ronnie Del Carmen. I think this is one of their upcoming features.

According to a commenter at /Film, it's for a short film titled "Night and Day" by Teddy Newton.

This isn't a screenshot but a screen capture of a publicity photo released to publicize the release of UP.
I know because I sent it to PixarTalk

As cool as this looks, I'm really hoping it doesn't start off with "Millions of years ago...", I want entertainment, not a history lesson! Haha.

To me its looking more and more like some sort of tribute to Winsor McCay's Gertie the Dinosaur.

But at this stage it could be anything....

It turns out that this dinosaur thing is Pixar partnering with Discovery Channel to make a special called "Reign of the Dinosaurs". More information here:
