Mike, How many of the ten best picture nominated films have you seen, and which one is your favourite? I've seen 7.
Hopefully voters still vote Up for best animated, even though it's nominated for best picture. Not to be pessimistic, but I'd hate to see it losing both.
Honestly, I've only seen three so far: Up, Avatar, and The Blind Side.
I'm a big Pixar fan, & maybe this is the wrong website to say this, but I don't see how Up can be promoted as "the most original film of the year"
I've seen eight out of the ten Best Pic nominees (still missing An Education and Precious). If you ask me, the Blind Side doesn't deserve to be anywhere near that list. Luckily, it's not going to win.
Overall, we all know there are really 5 true nominees: The Hurt Locker, Precious, Up in the Air, Avatar, and Inglorious Basterds.
The Blind Side, District 9, A Serious Man, An Education, and Up were nominated for two reasons; 1) to spur audiences to watch a variety of genres hoping at least one will appeal to everyone and 2) their box office success in hopes to increase ratings of the ceremony.
Up is definitely in my top 5 (probably top 3) films of the year, but as a person who follows the Oscars and film, it really doesn't have a chance. Pixar has chosen to take it as a huge accomplishment and honor to have it be among those few who can claim "nominated for best picture" and now they strive for the more winnable best animated film (which it definitely is!).
I've seen every film; I hope The Hurt Locker wins. Its the best piece of film I've seen this year - it kept me on the edge of my seat for 2 hours without being as lame as Shutter Island.
Good luck Pixar!
Personally, I think Up has been both honored and simultaneously screwed by the Academy for being nominated for both Best Picture and Best Animated Picture. If it's nominated for Best Picture, doesn't that by default make it the best animated picture?
Because of this, what I would like to see is to have a different animated film like Fantastic Mr. Fox win the Best Animated Feature award, while Up can or doesn't have to win Best Picture. Since it was NOMINATED for Best Picture, it has already essentially won Best Animated - so give another animated film a chance.
Thank you. (And yes, I still love Up, but TPatF and FMF were really good too.
Its a great movie and there are big chances to win the Oscar. Pixar is one of the best Studios in the world... Note: sorry for my english, I am from Argentina.
