Statement on 'Up' Oscar nods

Pixar worldwide publicity released this statement from director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera regarding today's five Academy Award nominations for Up:

We are humbled and grateful to the Academy. Being nominated among these remarkable animated films is such an amazing privilege. On top of that, to be honored as one of the best pictures of the year is just mind-blowing. It’s truly been a long, wonderful ride getting here, and with all sincerity it really does feel like we’re floating on air.

I bet they had a party at Pixar Tuesday night. Can you imagine? All those employees dancing in the giant atrium? Not to mention all that free cereal...

Needless to say I'm ecstatic for this milestone, as well as for that "other" animated film on the best pic category. What I find odd is how this had sort of been telegraphed since last year given that Wall-E hadn't gotten enough, so to speak. Maybe the academy isn't as predictable anymore, still this matters and a whole lot. What a great year it's been for animation.

This is the second year in a row where i felt that the Pixar release was easily the best movie I saw of the year, on any level. I don't have kids. I'm in the prime demographic that tripe like Transformers targets. I'm an Oscar enthusiast and dig Indie flicks. And yet I still Up was by far the best movie of the year, as Wall-E was last year. I know it doesn't have a chance in Best Picture but I'm glad it's getting these accolades and am happy for Docter, who tends to be overshadowed by Brad Bird and Andrew Stanton (and who was robbed of the Best Animated Feature for Monsters, Inc. which is still one of my favorites).
