Toy Story 3 at the Toy Fair

Disney/Pixar and Toy Story 3 starred at the opening of this year's American International Toy Fair in New York City today. The industry trade show runs until Wednesday at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.

Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson joined Pixar creative chief John Lasseter and actor John Ratzenberger (voice of Hamm) in Gotham to unveil some of the 250+ new Toy Story toys set to be released between now and the end of the year. It was a special day for Lasseter, as he also had the privilege of being inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame.

One of the most exciting items revealed at the fair is the real-life plush of new 'TS3' character Lots-O'-Huggin' Bear (pictured, held by Lasseter). Made by Thinkway Toys, the definitive Toy Story Collection 'Lotso' speaks over 45 different phrases in two modes and responds to voice commands, hugs and tickles. He's also strawberry-scented right out of the box.

(This last point pretty much rules out the chance that the character will be a villain in the film, as previously thought possible. A huggable, strawberry-scented villain? I don't think so!)

Disney Consumer Products released a fact-filled press release earlier summarizing the day's events and promoting 'TS3' as "the largest toy licensing event of 2010". It includes descriptions of the many of the new toys. The DCP website also has two sections (click one) of photographs from the Toy Fair.

That's exactly what they WANT you to think.

@Anonymous

I second that sentiment.

I wouldn't expect him to not be a villian. The "they just love new toys, now don't they" makes him a villain. Look at the toys' reaction, Mrs. Potato Head looks upset, and the toys behind lotso look evil. Plus, the "You've got a play-date with destiny" scene, Buzz looks evil, I assume he's been manipulated by Lotso.

They have a new Buzz Lightyear, WITH Utility Belt!!!

Jessie, Bullseye, Lotso!!!

I think you're wrong. He's the villain, or in some way associated with the villains.

Umm, no...its just his toy description. they didnt describe stinky pete as a villain either Im sure.

But would he sell to kids as a toy if he was a villain?

I think it's a double bluff. A red herring, even.

I agree. Why would 'they' manufacture a product that kids wouldn't want to buy? Kids want the nice toys. Not the bad ones. A Teddy bear is not something older kids want either. They didn't make Stinky Pete into a toy you could buy, did they? I can't wait to find out, though.

I'm not entirely sure, but perhaps Mike was trying out his hand at sarcasm? Maybe you should confirm this Mike!

A bigger question is though, Mike, will you be getting a review copy of Lotso to write about on TPB?

Mike said...

Uh, no, I wasn't being sarcastic. For me, everything now points to Lots-O-Huggin' Bear being a friendly character in the movie. Maybe a bit tough at the start or something, but still a "nice" toy.

If there's a toy villian I bet it'll be Ken, that guy has issues

They did. Had his box and everything. Its a rare find these days though on ebay. I only saw it in my local Disney store in the 90s.

And I dont think the bad guy excuse works. they make toys out of villains all the time. they might not always sell as well as the heroes, but I think being a cute teddy bear will override any evil he has. not to mention there will be plenty of the target demographic wont even have seen the movie. he'll sell based on being an interactive teddy bear alone.

I believe Lotso might be that exact I'm-too-cute-and-fatherly-to-be-a-bad-guy-or-so-I-made-you-think kind of villain.
Personally, I'd love him to be a bit harsh at the start and then become this sweet fatherly figure that Woody thought he'd find in Uncle Pete.

And a pink, strawberry scented teddy bear? I want one :D

From the trailer, it seems that Ken is the biggest villain...
