Tomorrow marks the arrival of Pixar's Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on the next-generation, high-definition Blu-ray Disc (BD) format. The two animated classics are being sold in Special Edition Combo Packs that include an additional DVD copy of the films as well.Unfortunately, I won't be publishing my own review, as I did not, for some reason, receive review copies in time to do so despite repeated requests. But I'm still very excited about enjoying the movies in hi def, with assuredly impeccable 1080p video and crystal clear 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. I'll be picking them up from the store as soon as I have the chance.
Both titles are packed with new bonus material and include the "classic" extras from previous DVD releases as well. Each BD features a special sneak peek at Toy Story 3.

You should have gotten the UK editions imported. They're delicious. <3
I love Blu-ray.com's reviews. Even though I don't have a Blu-Ray player or an HDTV, It's still fun to see the large (720p) screenshots they have.
We have had these in the UK for a couple of weeks now and they really do look amazing. Definitely worth picking up and adding to any other Pixar Blu-rays you already have.
That's too bad about not getting review copies, Mike. Are you sure you won't still get them?
Completely off-topic: I know you often don't seem to like giving DreamWorks Animation a chance, but are you planning on checking out How To Train Your Dragon? It's currently at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 11 reviews. I figure it won't finish below 85%, or 90%.
If you do, let us know what you think! :)
Hey, just a random tidbit. If you have your old TS 1 & 2 VHS, you can enter the 12 digit UPC codes on the Disney Movie Rewards site for $10 off each movie. Also, at Target you get $10 off if you buy both movies together. I'm super excited to watch all of these! I'm starting my own Disney movie review blog, I wish I could get the movies for free. :P
I'm wondering if I should pick these up or wait until after Toy Story 3 is out. I currently have the first DVD "Toy Box" collection, so the blu-ray/dvd combo isn't very attractive to me, and I'm wondering if they will double dip and put out a blu-ray Toy Box equivalent with all three movies and some extras later in the year?
Gag me.
I forgot to mention in the coupon post that the TS1 & TS2 Blu-rays have a voucher for a ticket to go see TS3 (up to $8.50 value)! So if you pick up the two Blu-rays and use the coupons, you essentially get to see TS3 with a hot date for free (or you get to have a TS1/TS2 movie night with a date for free)! Great deals - thanks Disney/Pixar!
@Jonathon: I think Mike will like very much! It means he gets to bring hot date to TS3, and tell them random facts about Pixar! ; )
Got mine the other day and I'm astounded how much better they look. In fact, I alsmot wondered if this was part of the re-rendering they did for the 3D double feature (the blu-rays are not 3D stereoscopic). It's hard to believe the lighting and color is that much better with just a higher rez re-master. But believe me- it is amazing! For instance, many scene now feature the main characters have very subtle but clear edge lighting that really adds to separation of foreground to background and if that was in the original DVD it was just plain lost in the transfer. As with all Blu-Rays, the color space and dynamic range of light to dark is far wider, so all kinds of details that were lost come out now. Each character really shows the care put into textures (Bow Peep's dress and corset come to mind). The airport luggage scene is many times more fun now with layers of background far more dynamic and clearer than before, as was as the night scene of driving to the airport.
The surround sound is also many orders better- not just clearer, but spatially much more immersive. Much less sound coming from this speaker or that, but just realistically placed in a 360 degree environment. All of this is what I've come to expect from th last few movies of course, like Wall-e, Ratatouille, or UP, but bringing their two earlier classics to this realm is just fantastic. The Monsters, Inc. BD update also was all this too, and I can't wait for the few remaining films to get this treatment. I can't wait. 5 Stars!
