In a special media event this afternoon on the Disney lot in Burbank, Walt Disney Studios chairman Rich Ross made the official announcement that Pixar is working on Monsters, Inc. 2, confirming what has been rumoured for the past several years.
The sequel to 2001's Monsters, Inc. is scheduled for release in theatres on November 16, 2012. Who is writing, directing, and producing was not revealed, nor was any plot outline.
Confirming a second rumour, Ross also announced that Pixar's The Bear and the Bow is to be retitled Brave. Totally unexpectedly, however, the film's release date was pushed back. Originally scheduled to arrive Winter 2011 (which would have resulted in the first year with two Pixar releases), Brave is now set to open on June 15, 2012.
What effect this will have on Newt (the future Pixar project I'm anticipating the most) is not clear at the moment. The film was first scheduled for Summer 2011, then pushed to Summer 2012. It will now probably move to Summer 2013, or if Disney wants to be gutsy about it, Spring of that year. This may indicate that the studio is experiencing serious production troubles on Newt, the subject of yet another rumour, one I very much hope is untrue.

I also am wondering what this means for newt. As you point out there have been rumors about it having problems. So hopefully it's just being pushed back to 2013. As a huge fan of Pete, I'm very excited to see Monsters, Inc 2.
Don't you mean the date for Brave is pushed "back" from 2011 to 2012?
In any case, very exciting news!!
Wow, huge news, Mike. Not sure what to think of in terms of Monsters, Inc. 2; I'll have to learn more info about it to gain an opinion.
In terms of The Bear and the Bow now named Brave and the release pushed forward, I'm OK with it. But again, I need to see more about the film to gain an opinion. I've heard rumors that Newt has been cancelled, I certainly hope that's not the case as the premise looks highly entertaining.
You said Brave was pushed foward, dont you mean pushed back? the release is now further away, not closer if its now planned for 2012 instead of 2011.
FINALLY some confirmation. Now to wait for the details on director and crew. Pete Docter said in a recent interview that he's now developing an original project, so it's not him...
Oh and I am going to be sorely disappointed if Newt gets the ax. That was the movie I was most interested in seeing.
I am really not sure how I feel about this. I was initially excited since MI is one of my absolute favorites, but I'm not sure. I do trust them (of course) that they'll have a great story or they wouldn't be going with it, but you have to wonder as to why all these sequels all at once?
I was anticipating Newt as well, if it is indeed having story troubles, I hope they get them worked out so we can finally see it someday.
Bear and the Bow being retitled I'm ok with, there was enough drama over Rapunzel/Tangled that I think the fights out of me on that subject, or maybe it's just not as drastic.
I'm pretty sure Newt isn't happening at this point. If it was, they probably would have mentioned it along with all of their other upcoming releases…
As I know about Monsters Inc. 2, the director is Doug Sweetland.
Jeff: Thanks for pointing that out.
Anonymous: Are you serious?
Why is everyone so sad about Newt's demise anyway? It sounded like it was essentially going to be a remake of WALL•E.
Rich Ross says Pete Docter is back for this.

I liked "The Bear and the Bow" as a title. It has an old timey feel to it, which I presume the style of the art will be, judging by what we've seen so far.
I heard Newt's dead.
maybe one day newt will come back into fruition. I was definitely looking forward to it most, besides toy story 3.
Monsters Inc. 2 I have a bit of trouble with, I felt the first one really wrapped everything up so nicely I find it hard to go on another adventure with our favourite monsters. I am hopeful though.
Brave (I prefer bear and the bow title) is still a mystery to me, it'll be interesting to see pixar tackle the mythology, fantasy, fairytale story and I'm curious to see how it will perform compared to repunzel. (and yes I know they will be released two years apart from each other)
I wouldn't be surprised if Pete is helping out with Monsters 2 (in fact, I'd be surprised if he wasn't), but he's not directing. He says in this interview that he's currently developing an original project, though he's involved in at least one other:

My guess for director is Doug Sweetland, and not just because Anonymous said so. Directing a short is Pixar's stepping stone to feature directing. Jan Pinkava had Geri's Game, Gary Rydstrom had Lifted... Doug has Presto. Plus, he has such a strong reputation as one of the top animators at Pixar, he just seems the most likely candidate for the job.
Monsters, Inc. 2.... hmm... I trust that Pixar will make a great story, but for some reason the idea of it hasn't really sold me yet. I hope Bob Peterson is directing! I think he (second to Pete of course) is the one who understands MI the most.
While I really loved the name of The Bear and the Bow (mystical, fairytale-esque...), something about "Brave" excites me more. We have to wait half a year later, but I just know it'll benefit the story.
Don't get me wrong, I am completely stoked about a "Monsters, Inc. 2", but I am so completely bummed that "newt" is more likely no more! :(
