Reign of the Dinosaurs [UPDATE]

On April 8, the Discovery Channel announced as part of its upcoming slate of programming for 2010-2011 a new television special entitled Reign of the Dinosaurs, to be produced in collaboration with "the top creative talent from Disney and Pixar". No specific air date was made public.

The press release calls the special "an unparalleled television event... bound to be the benchmark for all future dinosaur natural history programming." Is it just me or does this sound really exciting?

Everything now points to the much-examined boy and dinosaur concept art (here and here) being for RotD. It would be most unusual for Pixar, or any studio for that matter, to be working on two separate releases of such a similar theme. They must be connected. Then again, we've been wrong about Pixar's "dinosaur project" before.

Unsurprisingly, the studio is not saying much. Asked whether the artwork we've seen is for RotD, Pixar publicity responded: "All the information available is in the release you received. Beyond that, we have no comment."

But how would the little boy pictured in the artwork we've seen fit in to a natural history program? Well, the press release mentions "Hollywood storytelling" so that could be it.

Update: Wrong again! Reign of the Dinosaurs is not a Pixar production. Details can be found here.

Hmm, my interest is piqued... a television special isn't what I would have expected at all, but it would certainly be very exciting to see.

This may seem somewhat far fetched... but the drawings of the boy next to the dinosaur could have just been for the sake of scale.
