Brad Bird directing Mission: Impossible IV

Speaking with Empire magazine, actor Tom Cruise confirmed what's been rumoured for weeks: Pixarian Brad Bird has signed on to direct Mission: Impossible IV, slated for release in December 2011, as his first live-action project. The film is a Bad Robot/Paramount Pictures/Skydance production.
"We’re working with Brad right now. I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about it but everything’s signed... Brad is doing it. The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille —Brad is enormously talented and J.J. [Abrams] and I are having a blast," says Cruise.
Evidently 1906, the live-action Warner Bros./Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar co-production Bird was working on for several years, has been shelved indefinitely.

There had been much speculation that production on the epic 1906, set during the time of the devastating earthquake in San Francisco, was not going ahead due to lack of financial support from the studios, which makes no sense whatsoever considering Bird's track record. However, if MI:4 finds success at the box office, which it will, the project should get restarted very quickly.

Bird also remains committed to Pixar. He was at the studio recently, overseeing [redacted]. Sorry can't talk about it.

I was looking this up as soon as I heard about it earlier today. On IMDB, it seems that pixar is listed as doing the titles for the movie.
Take a look, I can't tell if I'm reading it right or I'm just crazy:

Mike Barnett: Noticed that, but IMDb is notoriously inaccurate. Seems unlikely...

Dave: Yes, and I tweeted them.

You know something Bird is overseeing at Pixar?

Man, I hope he's shepherding the reported woes with "Newt". I've been pulling for the rumor that it's "dead" to be untrue since hearing it in February.

Makes total sense if you consider he's never directed a live action movie. His work with animation has been nothing short of spectacular. It makes sense the Studios would be a little withheld at investing big budget movies though. Also I think it's smart for the studios to pair him with JJ and cruise, it shows they have faith in him, but they just need some hard evidence before handing him his dream project. (money, money, money)

If the next MI movie does well, I'll bet we'll see 1906 back up and running.

To be fair, it might be a really bad time for an earthquake movie

I'll be very interested to see how this turns out. He's fantastic with animated films, so I'm sure he'll be great!

1906 is still on schedule, according to IMDB, it says that it's coming out in 2012 after MI4. But, as I just learned, IMDB is apparently pretty inaccurate.

Ugh... Mi4? Why would he agree to direct such trash?

My hopeful guess is that MI4 is the studio's way of testing him. MI is a well-established franchise with a pretty sound guarantee of at least decent box office returns even if Brad turns in a mediocre film. It's a fairly low risk way of figuring out if he's up to the job. Then, if he proves himself there, they'll probably give him the go ahead to do 1906. I hope.

Personally, I trust him fully with MI4, even if I don't care much for the series. From what I've read, Brad is not going to let it go down the crapper as a dumb sequel. His vision for the film is emotionally driven, with action in the service of story, just as it should be. Just as it always has been with Brad Bird.

I agree with acooper2! Just like he said Brad will make this work in his own special way and he will surprise us just as he always does!
