Lasseter co-directing Cars 2?

Jim Hill of Jim Hill Media was at Disney's latest consumer products showcase in New York City yesterday and claims that Disney reps there were "quite up front" about John Lasseter being "officially" the co-director of Cars 2.

Lasseter has been working closely with director Brad Lewis since production on the sequel began, and there have been whispers that Lasseter's involvement has intensified in recent months because of development problems.

So there is reason to believe that Lasseter is acting as a co-director and may be credited as such when the film is released. However, today's report is far from an actual confirmation. Pixar publicity declined to comment.

Interesting. But, the "co-director" credit can be a little misleading. On big productions like this, there is typically A director and then co-directors who are in charge of specific duties like editing, etc.

Toy Story 2 for instance was directed by John Lasseter and CO-directed by Lee Unkrich and Ash Brannon. But, it was clearly JL's film. It'll be interesting to see which "directing" credit JL will receive. Whatever the case, JL will leave his mark all over the film:)

Keep up the good work, we read your blog every day!

I'm glad to hear that Lasseter is going to be doing some more directing work for Pixar.

I really was feeling uneasy about all of these sequels coming out, however, after seeing Toy Story 3, I have complete faith.

Development problems? Really? Either I have a terrible memory or that's the first I've heard of it. Fix it, Lasseter, fix it! Don't have another "Newt" on your hands! (Yes, I'm still so sad over that one.)

I'm not really surprised to hear that there are problems, but I'm glad that Lasseter may have signed on as co-director. I'm sure he can work his magic and make this a more-than-decent film.
