Toy Story 3 weekend box office: $109 million [UPDATE: $110.3 million]

Toy Story 3 was the No. 1 film at the North American box office this weekend, making an incredible $109,000,000 dollars, according to estimates just published. Final figures will be released tomorrow.

The $100 million-plus opening weekend is the best ever for a Pixar film, and the second best for an animated motion picture in general. Pixar's previous best opening weekend record was set by The Incredibles in 2004, which earned $70.5 million in its first three days.

Update: Final figures have been released. Toy Story 3 grossed $110,307,189 —$1.3 million more than yesterday's estimate of $109 million.

Toy Story 3's $110.3 million opening weekend is the best ever for a June release, animated or live-action.

A very limited opening in a few international markets brought in an additional 44.8 million dollars U.S., bringing the movie's total lifetime gross to $155,107,189.

I took my 3 year old to see his first movie theatre movie and since he loved the original Toy Story, I thought this was perfect. We found it too dark and scary for the young child, from the opening scene, to the jailing of the toys to their constant attempt to escape death. After spending over $50 on tickets and snacks, we spent most of the time in the lobby waiting for what he called "better parts" to go back in, but they didn't happen until the very end and the credits. I would caution parents of very young children that this might not be the best movie to go to.

It's still only an estimate. I hope you'll be updating your information once the final numbers actually come out.

Definitely deserves the money, I loved it to pieces. Just gotta agree with Nina that this is also a very upsetting movie at times and I don't recommend very small children seeing it (unless they're extremely brave).

let me say i thought that the jail escape scene was the greatest thing ever to happen to this world.

One of the best movies I've ever seen...hands down. My wife, 10 yo, & 5 yo loved it as well.

Yay! If it beats Finding Nemo as Pixar's highest grossing film overall, I'll be happy. And sad. Kinda. : )

Nina: Had it not been for the original two Toy Story movies, this would not have been a G. It definitely would warrant the PG rating that is often slapped on more intense animated films.

Unfortunately, it wasn't rated as such, and now, there will be a lot of families with children under 6-8 years old, that will be walking in and out. These are families that may have made a different choice with a different rating.

I'd suggest that you go see it yourself though. Not watching it constantly thinking what your child would think, but for yourself. For older kids and adults, it's a very well done movie.

Sure showed Shrek 4 and DreamWorks on how to close a franchise! Not just in the figures, but the story alone.

I agree with both Nina and onemoviefiveviews - the movie was a little too dark and scary for my 4 year old, who crawled to sit with me about half way; it should have probably been rated PG.

That said, Pixar still managed to work their magic: who would have thought they'd be able to take the emotional beginning from Up, and capture the same thing in Toy Story?

$14.50 of that's from me.

I've been telling people that it's better than 2 and quite possibly better than 1.

I just came back from it, and it was amazing, but please tell me I'm not the only one who is going to have nightmares about that monkey tonight.
