Toy Story 3 crew exclusive soundtrack CD

Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich had the world-class Pixar publicity team send me a copy of the special crew-exclusive Toy Story 3 soundtrack on CD; it arrived in my mailbox this afternoon.

Given out as a gift to studio employees, the complete soundtrack by Randy Newman is not sold anywhere and contains all the music from the film —about twice as much music than included on the publicly-available 'TS3' soundtrack album, which can be purchased only as a digital download.

It has a remarkable 73 tracks on two discs, running 1:01 hour, including four bonus ones from short film Day & Night, composed by Michael Giacchino. The track names sometimes differ from those of the regular album. For example, the exhilarating opening track is here called "Blue Sky", while in the released version it takes the name "Cowboy!"

The back of the cardboard packaging (not pictured) features a message from Unkrich and Darla K. Anderson —with an appreciation of composer Newman— and bears small Walt Disney Records and Pixar logos.

The album came accompanied by a letter from Lee, on fine studio letterhead. He thanks me for my "support and fandom" on the blog.

A big thank-you to Lee and the Pixar team for the gift.

Aw, I wish they would release the full soundtrack to us. I would buy it for sure! This makes me think what other pieces of Disney/Pixar soundtracks I'm missing. I don't know why they wouldn't release it... I'd buy it in a snap! :(

You lucky bugger.

I don't download music, I've only ever bought CDs, so I'll have to change my principles to get the soundtrack. And probably all future Pixar/Disney music, I guess.

WANT. I love when soundtracks are released that contain the full score as opposed to just the basic songs. ("Lord of the Rings" comes to mind.)

Here's to hoping this (or something similar) will be made public! I want to hear every last note!

Awesome! What a great, classy souvenir!

I don't understand why they don't make all the music available as a digital download: There are many, many fans who would love to hear it all!

Maybe a special edition will show up on iTunes one day...

I was able to listen to the crew cd for Up and it was fantastic. I bet you'll get lots of enjoyment from these cds. Congrats on your recognition. Well deserved.

They did a similar release for the cast and crew of Finding Nemo. It's an absolutely wonderful (and complete) collection of music that I still find occasion to listen to today. Enjoy the fine release. :)

You deserve it, but I can't help hating you.

Nah, I'll redirect my hate hate to Disney who seems hell-bent on not releasing anymore Pixar soundtracks, even though Up won the Grammy and Academy award for best score of 09.

But, I see they were still able to release The Princess and the Frog on CD. Why can they release that but not Pixar's music, it doesn't make any sense!

**** you, Disney! (Sorry about that Walt)

Enjoy the soundtrack Mike! :)

It is quite a shame Disney does not offer material like this to the general public. I am a big fan of full scores and soundtracks. Stuff like this is quite a treat. Needless to say, I am quite jealous.

Man- that thing is quite nice. Good for you Mike- you deserve it.

I have to say the move to "download only" is a BIG mistake until the downloads are true lossless compression. I for one will not get it until it's lossless.

I got the Wall-e soundtrack from iTunes and over time I really could tell there was something not right. So I went ahead and got the CD and the difference was huge. So much that sounded squashed together or maybe a synth was now obviously separate instruments and acoustic ones at that. Anything orchestral will suffer greatly from lossy compression, which of course almost all soundtracks are.

Oh wow... I never knew there were extended soundtracks of Up and the Incredibles... I would LOVE to take a listen to either of them. I wonder if there is a crew cut of Wall-e as well... Maybe one day they will release them. I hope they do. I would buy them in an instant!! :)

That's a really nice keepsake Mike!

On the other note everyone's talking about, I too think they should be releasing physical CD's. Obviously, it wouldn't have all of the tracks like a cast & crew CD, but at least it would have 45 minutes to an hour.

My full thoughts on digital download only here:

Wow, I'm super jealous! I haven't bought the UP or TS 3 soundtrack because they didn't release them on CD. This was incredibly nice of them!

Hmm... so no included pages of Mr. Lasseter's note paper? : D

Congratulations, man!

CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE 5 TRACKS FOR DOWNLOAD! I think all fans of randy newman and toy story 3 deserve this. I love the track, when lotso changes buzz from play to demo! sighhhh. maybe 1 day they'll release at least some on the track they have now.

Just a few things:
I'm pretty sure Cars had an extended unreleased soundtrack, because there's music in the scene where Doc Hudson first tries his old tires out after years of not using them. The music was really cool, but it wasn't on the CD.

Is there any way you could share the Day & Night music with us on YouTube under fair use?

Lastly, I think the Toy Story 3 CDs you were sent have much of the same music as the public album, but looking at the track list, the selections are cut up more to be more specific to certain scenes. For example, "You Were Lucky" on the main album release is quite long and covers Woody at Bonnie's house, Chuckles' story about Daisy, and Andy's toys' breakout from Sunnyside, minus "Le Freak". On your CD, the music in "You Were Lucky" seems to be covered somewhat by Bad Lotso, Not Going Home, Escape?, In The Bag, You Were Lucky, Mr. Tortilla, and The Pidgeon, more or less. Gosh, your CD does have a whole lot more!

I know you all would like a copy of this released to the public... so why not tell Pixar yourselves? I personally mailed out a letter to Mr. Lasseter yesterday. Who knows if he'll read it, who knows if it'll even get to his desk. But I tired. I would love all of these extended soundtracks to be available. Even if only on iTunes. How hard can it be for Disney/Pixar to submit an a new album? Maybe as easy as me clicking 'Buy'. :)

Whoa. That sounds fabulous. Enjoy it for all of us!

Can I hate just a little?

jealous as well... I agree with many who have already commented, I would buy that in an instant if it was available. I do wonder also, why so often film soundtracks don't include all the music in the film; it can be very frustrating.

Well, in general, they wouldn't release all the music for long movies, since the average CD usually doesn't do longer than around 70-80 minutes or so. Spilling onto two CDs is more costly, and a lot of the cues are similar anyways.

It's when there are 45 minute CDs with films with a lot of musical variety that I sometimes wonder why they didn't bump it up by at least 15-20 minutes.

There is a market for score soundtracks, but for some odd reason, it seems Disney is trying out a digital only experiment with Pixar.

awwww. im so dissapointed in finding that they didn't put at least some of the major music used in the movie on the soundtrack thats available to the public :(
not fair. PIXAR should at least add more to their soundtrack! I wanna listen to some of those tracks very badly!

Paul Hastings said...

That rocks! Keep those Pixar updates coming!

Oh, jeez, thanks Pixar, for not releasing ALL the music.

I swear, no company "gets it". You don't treat your fans to sloppy seconds, and then you give a few "special people" access to the full thing... People are willing to pay money for this, but you refuse to release it to everyone, and thus you don't get our money. Then you call the lawyers when someone rips the music and puts it online under the guise of archaic copyright laws.

Seriously, rip this in FLAC, and share it. Don't get all moral on me Mike, and don't magically deny this message because I'm posting Anonymously, or I have constructive criticism. There is zero chance of fans EVER getting to listen to this legally.

Mike said...

Believe me, I sympathize. But I won't rip the CDs. Not classy.

Anonymous said...

Will it ever be released?

Anonymous said...

not classy mike? pff. your the one thats NOT classy. your the one bragging that you have the CD. Thats not classy sir! I can't stand when movies do this.....like whats the point of even releasing a movie soundtrack to the public when all of the rest of the good stuff isnt even on the dam soundtrack?! POINTLESS. Pixar made this movie FOR US. And because of that, we all deserve this gift. After all, fans and the public made Toy Story 3 SOO much money and the top grossing film......it's because of US they did so well. So in that case, PIXAR needs to return the favor.

Stuff like this is why I stopped paying for anything disney offers.
You guys can suck a lemon.
