Toy Story 3 reaches $1 billion dollars globally

Two weeks after becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Toy Story 3 will cross the $1,000,000,000 mark at the global box office today, The Walt Disney Studios announced in a press release this hour.

'TS3' is the first animated film to reach $1 billion and only the seventh movie in history.

As of yesterday, Toy Story 3 had grossed more than $404.4 million domestically and $592.9 million internationally.

Walt Disney Pictures' Tim Burton-directed Alice in Wonderland also reached $1 billion worldwide a few months ago, making Disney the only studio ever to release two billion dollar blockbusters in one year. Sci-fi thriller Tron: Legacy (opening Dec. 17) should prove to be a third, making Disney's record exceptionally hard to beat.

Congratulations to director Lee Unkrich, producer Darla K. Anderson, and the entire team at Pixar and Disney on reaching this milestone.

This is excellent news, but I certainly hoping you're wrong about Tron.

"Ooh-hoo-hoo! Moneymoneymoney!"

I kind of knew this was coming, definitely after it became the highest grossing animated film of all time, but I'm still awed that it's gotten so much. And if the Oscars truly do love a winner, this could prove very good for Pixar come 2011.

Congrats, Pixar!

Congrats to the Toy Story team and everyone at Pixar! Now if only some of these people would give the amazing Scoot Pilgrim a chance. ;-)

TRON: Legacy will be fortunate to make $500 million worldwide. It will need to make at least $350m domestic to be considered a hit given it's star power, extensive marketing (no one could consider this a "sleeper"), budget & 3D version.

The property isn't international (doesn't feature international locations, doesn't have foreign locations, doesn't feature foreign actors, etc.) so it'll be domestic heavy in terms of revenue.

My prediction is that it'll be like a summer blockbuster - Heavy opening weekend with a steep drop off. Given the release date, it'll have two "bumps" - Christmas and New Year's, that'll probably pad the revenue by about $15 - $25m.

In the end, I wouldn't be surprised if this film makes anywhere from $180-$280m dom with international revenue being roughly the same or slightly less.

Toy Story 3 has passed The Dark Knight; it is now #6, with $1,012,059,221. Anyone thing it will pass Alice in Wonderland?

@ Graeme Allen Yes! It definitely will pass Alice. Anyone that says otherwise will be proven wrong, mark my words.

No way Tron will make a $1bn. TS3 and Alice built into existing popular fanbases.

Tron is just fondly remembered but that's no guarantee of success - look at the A Team remake!

Tron Legacy seems more akin to Avatar and the kind of fare that clogs up the multiplexes during the summer (Star Trek, Transformers, Iron Man etc.)

As for being built into existing franchises, Avatar grossed nearly $3 billion, but that didn't come from an established film franchise!
