Cars 2 teaser and concept art released

While I was engrossed watching Apple bring out their new products this afternoon, Pixar released a preview of their next "product", Cars 2, which will be in theatres on June 24 next year.

The very first teaser trailer for the film was posted to the official Disney/Pixar YouTube channel, in full 1080p high definition.

Except for Luxo shooting the laser beam, which is undeniably cool, I wasn't thrilled by it, mostly because there not a glimpse of footage from the film itself. And the whole concept of this teaser (or "logo reveal" as it's termed) is too similar to those 'grown up' promos for Toy Story 3 we saw a while back.

Three pieces of wonderful new concept art were also released. You can check them out at Empire (the film opens in the U.K. on July 22). I love London, so the one of Westminster Bridge and Big Ben has to be my favourite.

"Mater?" "I think we bit off more than we can chew."

I am SOOO looking forward to this! Too bad "Cars 2" has no chance of staying on #1 on its 2nd weekend, thanks to Transformers 3 (which I am also looking forward to).

Since when did Mater become the major character? Seriously, I don't like Larry the Cable Guy's work; unless Cars 2 gets REALLY good reviews, I think I might wait for the DVD...

Unless I hear about a surprise plot twist in which Mater is killed off in the second act.

Up until Wall-E, it was Pixar tradition to release a teaser trailer for their next film without using or revealing any footage from the movie itself. Remember Mr. Incredible putting his belt on? Remember Mike and Sully tumbling into an empty bedroom?

I was very pleased with the return to tradition. We'll get our footage soon enough, but I missed these teasers. It should have been in front of Toy Story 3 though, like the others, but I guess putting it on the Blu-Ray is the same idea.

I have a theory that the TS3 trailer had actual movie footage because it was a sequel.
I was initially wary of TS3, suspecting it to be a money-grab with a weak story, but the trailers with the jail-break stuff changed my mind.
(and it was an awesome movie!)

I again feel this way about Cars 2... but maybe a more informative trailer will again change my mind.

We saw how heavily Toy Story 3 was marketed online beginning late last year and getting more intense up til the movie's release in June.

I wonder if the marketing efforts for Cars 2 is going to be similar - introducing us to new characters one by one, faux commercials and scenarios and such.

Yeah, the teaser video was so-so.

Mike, can you refresh my memory of what the TS3 'grown up' promos are?

You're forgetting the first teaser where they are building the logo that's comprised of dialog from the first two films. No footage from the actual film!

I wasn't thrilled either... It was like watching the beginning of one of those 'Mater's Tall Tales' which i'm not really fond of...
I just don't get it, why did Pixar thought Cars 2 was a good idea? I mean, even BIG Pixar fans (like me) think it's bound to be a complete fail (note that i'm not saying that ALL Pixar fans think it's a bad idea).
I guess it's part of the 'creating value for shareholders' thing that you mentioned once.
However, Pixar ALWAYS has a way of making us (the pessimistic kind) eat our own words, and hope it will be that way... again.

I have another theory about sequels, which is Pixar will make sure every franchise under its production will earn an Oscar. Right now, the ones who have yet to win are Toy Story, Cars, Monsters Inc, and Bug's Life. TS3 will very likely to win it next year, so that's why Cars and Monsters Inc are up next for sequel production.

A Bug's Life 2 will be the 2013/2014 project, with Dot growing up and adventure around the world!

/end of theory

If there's any reason to make a sequel to Cars it's that there's so much room to improve over the original. Making a sequel to nearly any other Pixar movie save The Incredibles would be extremely difficult to due their self contained stories and most of them are, well... impossible to be improved upon because they're so good.

Cars has the lowest ranking of any Pixar film. The story wasn't that original, but at least the characters were fun. From that fact, you can assess two things:

1. A sequel, especially an original story, is almost guaranteed to be better than the original since the original wasn't that good.

2. Transplanting those same fun characters into a better story results in a better movie.

Bug's Life sequel?!? What Bug's Life sequel?!? I looked on Wikipedia. No report of a sequel. And neither this blog nor Upcoming Pixar have reported such a thing. Where's your proof of a Bug's Life sequel? Nobody's gonna believe you without it.

Darrell-He was being facetious. Don't take him too seriously about a bugs life sequel.

I totally agree with Picky Pixie.
I think Pixar was disappointed with how the first Cars was received, and wants to change the general public's view of the franchise with an awesome sequel.
I'll need to see some real footage of this to get excited, but right now I'm still feeling optimistic about this movie.

To be honest, for them releasing the Cars 2 teaser the same week of Brenda Chapman being replaced, it seems as though Pixar is trying to distract the general audience from what has happened. Just a theory.

Look, Pixar knew that TS3 was going to appeal to a huge range of audiences spanning across all generations and genders.
Cars 2 on the other hand is going to satisfy the original audiences from Cars 1 since it's a sequel. Guess what, that target audience will mostly be comprised of the male gender born from the 90s.

This to me is fine. Pixar's not going to change the pace or style of this film just because it already fits in the same genre Cars first established.

Probably in the minority I can say I am really looking forward to this film. Personally, I don't look back at Cars as a bad Pixar film at all, in fact, after further inspection I can boldly say it was an excellent film. Cars biggest flaw definitely goes for the lack of originality in it's story. I can see Pixar trying to redeem their last attempt giving us a superb sequel this time with an original story (The "spy" theme seems quiet interesting actually). Even with all those reasons I still have hope within this film simply by the fact that Pixar has never disappointed me.
