The Walt Disney Company has decided that Pixar's Toy Story 3 deserves to be promoted as a contender for this year's Best Picture Oscar, reports The New York Times. Disney will push the film to Academy voters "with all its might" come awards season, which suggests a strong "For Your Consideration" campaign is being prepared to get 'TS3' nominated for the top Oscar prize.
If the successful campaign for Up is any indicator, we should begin to see the first ads in trade publications early next month. Nominations will be announced on January 25, 2011. The 83rd Annual Academy Awards presentation takes place on Sunday, February 27.

surely a nomination in a best ten field is a foregone conclusion? a win, however, would be just reward for a great film and the pixar legacy
I think this was no surprise to many of the hardcore Disney Pixar fans! Toy Story 3 was eve better in it's own way to 1 and 2. All 3 films are very memorable and unique. Not easy milking a franchise for 15+ years. I'm glad they do though. Can't wait to see who wins it.
I wonder if a sequel has ever won Best Picture.
It was definitely the best film I've seen all year.
The Godfather Part II (1974) and Return of the King (2003) both won. Not sure if there were any others...
@Mike Barnett: a sequel has never been Best Picture nominated if it's predecessor wasn't up there, so that would be a first. However The Godfather Part 2 and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King both won the top prize.
In my opinion, Toy Story 3 is headed to a very deserved nomination, however at this point the race seems to be between the two brilliant films The Social Network (Oct. 1st) and The King's Speech (Dec. 10th).
All three (along with How To Train Your Dragon, Inception and Never Let Me Go) are year-end favourites for me, and all highly worth watching. It's likely going to be hard for a lot of people to pick a favourite.

Godfather Part II and LOTR:ROTK are the only sequels to win Best Picture I believe. While Toy Story 3 is still the best flick of the year so far, even better than The Social Network, there's something ludicrous about it winning Best Picture. I guess I'm still sore that WALL-E wasn't even nominated.
@Mike Barnett:
the godfather part 2 - best picture 1974
lord of the rings: return of the king - best picture 2003
Godfather Part II won best picture. Well deserved, as TS3 would be.
In response to Mike: Return of the King won best picture. Sounds like a good omen, the third in a trilogy winning best picture. :) Hopefully TS3 can do so also!
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King won.
The thing is, I don't know if a film has ever been nominated if it's predecessors have not...
I'm pretty sure both Fellowship, and The Two Towers were also nominated... Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on all this.
This is great! I hope the Academy will take this seriously. TS3 deserves to win, or at least have a shot. Not just be a "no way it can win" nomination like Up was.
I liked 3 a lot but I don't think it deserves best picture. Maybe best threequel of all time - unless you count Back to the Future III.
