After being delayed for a week due to a storm and power outage at Disney's warehouse (true!), my copy of the Toy Story 3 Blu-ray/DVD finally arrived at my door on Monday.
I got the 4-disc combo pack, which has the movie on Blu-ray Disc (BD) and DVD plus a digital copy for iPods and other portable media players.
Picture and sound on the Blu-ray are awesome —no surprise there. It continues the tradition of every Pixar Blu-ray release supplanting the previous one as the "best I've seen". The experts at Blu-ray.com agree, giving the title a perfect 5.0 rating.
When it comes to extras, most are exclusive to the second BD. But some, like short film Day & Night and the animated Studio Stories, are also included on the DVD, which is identical in content to the standalone DVD edition.
(A complete list of extras included with each edition can be found in here.)
Talking about Studio Stories, the best one is probably "Clean Start", about the animators shaving off their hair at the start of production on Toy Story 3. They ain't kidding about Lee Unkrich having long hair before; there's a picture of him pre-haircut in one of the featurettes.
I haven't watched all of the bonus material yet, but the ones I have seen, like "Roundin' Up A Western Opening" and "Paths To Pixar: Editorial", are really good. And they're in full 1080p hi def, which is an extra treat.
This is precisely the home video release that Toy Story 3 deserves. Be sure to pick it up on Tuesday or as soon as you have the chance.

Not since The Incredibles has the DVD viewerbase been thrown a bone, especially remembering the barren wasteland that was the single disc Cars release. Blu-ray is a much sweeter means through which to give decent extra content for sure but for me there hasn't been a DVD release which was as good as the Monster's Inc. 2 disc set (though The Incredibles is so close!) which is pretty sad but that's just what WDHE are getting upto these days what with shoehorning that godawful Blu-Ray promo on their DVDs as a bonus feature.
Ha ha ha. Some of those look good. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely into all of those features, and I was NOT about to pay a ridiculous amount of money just for a 4-disc set... partially Blu-ray set, and I don't even have a Blu-Ray player. So I pre-ordered the 1-disc version... for just 17 bucks off Amazon. Not bad.
I loved this movie when I saw it in theaters. Not *quite* as good as Toy Story 2, but they're kind of hard to compare. The best thing about TS3 is its incredibly blow-away climax/ending. AAAAHHH!
Thanks for the info, Mike - already have mine pre-ordered. Can't wait!
Did you listen to the commentary track? How's that?
Awesome. I can't wait to listen to the commentary.
I think it's cool that blue-ray started giving ipod and iphone disks in them,
Some day I'll have a Blu-Ray player, but until then, Pixar/Disney and other film studios are going to make me (and others) suffer with less bonus features than the (sometimes snooty) Blu-ray crowd.
All of Pixar's standard DVDs up to and ending at The Incredibles were excellent examples of what DVD bonus features should be. Starting with Cars, it's really bugged me how they've downplayed the bonus features of future discs. WALL-E had a lot of good features, though, but not Ratatouille or Up.
@Darrell: When you include the $8 coupon (which can't be used online) and the discount you'll probably get at stores like Toys R Us or Target, it'll probably come out to about the same price for a bricks&mortar store's 4-disc blu-ray and the one-disc blu-ray you got on Amazon.
Is the Cars 2 teaser on the DVD any longer than the "logo reveal" that came out last week?
Very excited for this to come out next week. I don't really see the big vexation with Blu Ray. I hated it at first but now that the players have slowly become more reasonably priced and the discs are comparable in price it's got to be looking better everyday, right? I'm only a poor college student and I could buy a box that plays both kinds of discs. Anyways, the picture quality is fantastic and I'm excited to pull it out of the packaging and see what's in store. I enjoyed TS3. Thanks for the constant updates.
For those with a Blu-Ray player the Blu-Ray version is of course the icing on the cake. However I can see those without one wanting more. Thankfully Disney usually releases coupons for the Combo packs which are useful should you decide to get a new player. The Ratatouille DVD was nice, but the Blu-Ray had so much more content on it. I was very happy to find that out since I loved the film and was disappointed by the DVD extras. Blu-Ray is the right move for Disney, and with players available for under $99 those with HDTVs will soon find what all the fuss is about.
I'll end up getting the Toy Story 3 Combo Pack with my Disney coupon... too bad I couldn't get the black cover instead. :)

Don't count on it!
Anonymous #2: Not likely, or otherwise Mike or Upcoming Pixar would've posted it. Too bad, though.
Is this a region free disc? I cant wait for Aus' local release which will also be AU$30!
Hey congrats on the movie, I have to order my copy:)
Cancelled my pre-order, I'm getting the movie off iTunes instead for just 10 bucks. HAHAHAHAHA!
I reviewed this same set. With regards to the Cars 2 teaser, it's no different than the one released to the masses (although somehow my 3-year-old knew it was Cars 2 from the very first laser beam).
As for the DVD vs. Blu-ray debate -- once you see a Pixar film in high-def you will know why Blu-ray is the best option (the quality of the TS3 release just blew me away it was so clear and colourful). If you really are a Pixar fan I'd recommend upgrading to Blu-ray for it (plus, players are now under $100 at Target/Wal-Mart so there is no excuse).
My pre-ordered copy, which I expected to get here on November 2, came in the mail today. I couldn't contain my excitement. Hope everybody else gets this lucky.
