Disney going for Best Picture win for 'TS3'

The Walt Disney Studios wants more than just a Best Picture Oscar nomination for Toy Story 3, chairman Rich Ross tells Deadline Hollywood. "We’re going for the Best Picture win."

With that goal in mind, a clever series of For Your Consideration ads is being prepared featuring Toy Story 3 characters seemingly reenacting scenes from previous Best Picture winners. These are meant to sway A.M.P.A.S. voters away from the historic bias against animated films.

"We wanted to come up with a campaign that kept our aspirations clear but at the same time used a tongue in cheek approach," says Ross.

The first ad, shown above, speaks for itself. Several others are planned, including one themed to Forrest Gump, where Tom Hanks also played the main character.

I can see the Forrest Gump picture. There are a lot of possibilities and I hope they are able to win a nomination. I've enjoyed wearing out the disc. It will be great to see what other movies they reference with these posters. Clever, gotta love clever.

This is brilliant.

The comments on the news story bother me greatly. What narrow minded people to think just because the film is fully animated it can't win Best Picture.

...And How to Train Your Dragon better than TS 3?!?!?! Not even close, imo.

I'm rooting 100% for TS 3.

Please give us blog posts as the new ones come out. Love this idea.

Robby, How to Train Your Dragon was still really good. But you're right, TS3 is still better.

And before you start bashing me... maybe I should note that I love Dreamworks Animation as well as Pixar (the latter more, of course).

I think this is a GREAT campaign idea. Funny, smart, original, and hopefully a great way to get the attention of the Academy voters. I'm really excited to see the Forrest Gump poster, and this Shakespeare in Love one is lovely!

Sorry Robby, How to Train Your Dragon was better than Toy Story 3!

Some people seem to like HTTYD better, and others like TS3 - they are both highly well regarded films of the year in terms of reviews - just look at their RT rating. TS3 99% fresh, HTTYD, 98% fresh. And, they both only have 3 rotten reviews. TS3's percentage is higher by 1%, because more people reviewed it (although more people also reviewed HTTYD than a lot of other movies).

Most films don't get to that high, and having personally seen them both, I would class them both as deserving of a Best Picture spot. If only the Academy wasn't so weary of animation...

How to Train Your Dragon was better animation, better "acting", better story, better music... if any animated film this year wins best picture it should be Dragon, not TS3 (which was very good, but mostly a rehash and largely only so popular for sentimental reasons, not because of the single movie on its own). My two cents.

Wrong and fail anon. I love both, and have them both on Blu-Ray, but there is NO way that HTTYD is better than Toy Story 3

Yeah, if you like fantasy tales better than films about pieces of junk... :-)

I'm going to have some stuff on How to Train Your Dragon over the weekend.

I think the only thing that How to Train Your Dragon achieves more than TS3 is the music. Part of the thing that made HtTYD mind-blowing as well as TS3.

Interestingly enough, when I looked at the Disney Studio Awards website, it seems TS3 is the only film they are not presenting forward for musical score. Maybe it was ineligible because it had too many themes from the other films - it didn't sound overly original to me.

And yes, I most definitely agree - HTTYD, in my opinion has one of the best scores of the year. Unlike the score for TS3, this one blew me away - absolutely beautiful themes and work by John Powell here.

Heh. Yeah. The only part of the TS3 score that I actually liked was the scene in the incinerator, and even that was iffy. One reason is, you're right, because it duplicates too many themes from the other films.

HtTYD was also one of my favorite scores of the year. My absolute favorite was the score for "Inception," but this is great too. I love the music for the scene where Hiccup tries flying Toothless... WITH the cheat sheet. AAAHHHH! SO AWESOME!!!!!

Doesn't anybody realize that How To Train Your Dragon is just Ratatouille. The humans in Ratatouille are a threat to the rats just like how the Dragons are a threat to the humans in Ratatouille. Once the main character figures out that the dragons are not bad, just like the humans in Ratatouille, he starts to help them or be with them more. And then the big critic at the end of the movie in Ratatouille is like the big Dragon that all of the little dragons have to face in How To Train Your Dragon. Am I the only one that noticed this.

@Mike: Care to elaborate? ; )

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on HTTYD. It's right up there with TS3 as one of the year's best movies - animated or otherwise.

I didn't notice any similarity to Anton Ego, but I did notice the other references to Ratatouille... and I like this one far better. Ratatouille was good, but it seriously disappointed me, after Finding Nemo and The Incredibles and Cars.

I've posted my thoughts on HTTYD on Twitter/TwitLonger:

@Mike: Thanks for posting a link to your thoughts on HTTYD!

Glad you liked the film and will stop being mean to Dreamworks. Perhaps you'l start giving some of their other films, like Kung Fu Panda, a chance? : )

I'm just curious though, if you would give Toy Story 3 a 4 out of 4, how would you rate How To Train Your Dragon?

I agree... Mike has been continually bashing Dream-works films as if they're worser than all the dumb remakes of films that have been put out lately.

I don't care for Shrek and Madagascar too much, but I LOVE Kung Fu Panda, Monsters vs. Aliens, Flushed Away, Over the Hedge, HtTYD, MegaMind... the list goes on and on.

I would give TS3 (via my own rating system) 5 out of 5. HtTYD? 4 1/2.

*snigger* You know... I seem to remember one time back when Mike posted about the first HtTYD trailer, and called it "Craptastic."

And now look at what he's saying.
