Toy Story 3's original score is not among the seventy-seven scores that qualified for consideration in the Original Score category at the upcoming 83rd Academy Awards.
According to Variety, Disney chose not to enter the score, composed by Randy Newman, in order to focus on the Original Song category with "We Belong Together".
Newman's score fit perfectly with the film (and the series as a whole) and is a joy to listen to on its own, but this just wasn't Pixar's year to dominate the category.
While the music itself is original, Academy members may have been inclined to dismiss the score as being an extension of Newman's previous work on Toy Story and Toy Story 2.
So a smart move by Disney in reaching for a much-deserved nomination for "We Belong Together".
Agree?

agree; having two songs in contention lessens the chances that either will win outright, imho!
I am also inclined to dismiss TS3's score as an extension of the previous two films. Elements of A Bug's Life and Monster's Inc also appeared in there. Mike, don't you get it? There was too much of extending on from previous Pixar scores! Not that it wasn't original at times, it was, but it wasn't enough for me to buy the soundtrack CD. (I haven't bought any Pixar CDs since WALL-E, which the soundtrack for that was great.) And it's not enough for the Academy to remotely consider it for Original Score.
I do agree. Loved Newman's score for the film, but I think the song deserves a nom more than the score. Newman wouldn't have had a chance at winning for score anyway. Besides, I think there are more deserving candidates out there this year.
Like "Inception," acooper2? Or HtTYD? :)
Inception, HTTYD, The Ghost Writer, Tron Legacy, The King's Speech - all great scores... Tron Legacy is more interesting than lyrical though.
Disappointed to see them not putting forward the Tangled score either - in my opinion, it's quite good and would have deserved at least being on the shortlist.
Not surprised about TS3 though. I'd already noticed it wasn't on the Disney Studio Awards site anyway.
I think The Social Network deserves a shot at Best Score, but I think I read somewhere that it's ineligible for some reason. :/
That said, I agree with Disney's decision. I liked the score but I wasn't blown away.
@Darrell
HTTYD certainly. That's one of my favorite scores of the past couple years actually. King's Speech also has a terrific score. Hans Zimmer's work on Inception was effective, in my opinion, but not great.
Heh. Here's my list of favorite scores out of the past couple of years (2008-2010).
1. The Dark Knight
2. Inception
3. How to Train Your Dragon
4. Avatar
5. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (being a huge fan of the first score, I also thought that this was darn good)
Here's my opinion:
I believe that Toy Story 3 is a better film than How to Train Your Dragon. (Not by default though; HTTYD was great, but Toy Story 3 was more professional, funnier, and more genuinely emotional in my opinion.)
However...I think HTTYD has a much better soundtrack than TS3. I can't deny this. Songs like "Forbidden Friendship" and "Test Drive" have musical elements to them that I absolutely love.
That being said, my favorite soundtrack this year did not belong to an animated film.
Hans Zimmer's score to Inception was breathtaking. Even during the movie, I was actively listening to the music; it was not merely in the background...it was a driving force.
I love the pounding brass sound that layers on top of strings and guitar in "Dream Within a Dream", but I also love the slow and simple, yet powerful, swell of "Time." The climax of that song, timed perfectly with Cobb seeing his children's faces, brought a sudden, unexpected tear to my eye.
I'd like to see a Pixar film utilize an "Inception"-esque score someday.
I'm sure Disney is also pushing one of Tangled's songs for the Best Original Song category as well. Will they be pushing Tangled's score as well?
Wow, Angry Bird, you are a man of great taste. "Test Drive" was my favorite song off HtTYD. Personally, I thought that "528491" was the best track off Inception. That one nearly did bring a tear to my eye. And the simply banging ending to "Old Souls" was really good too. "Time" was also excellent; it's the other huge highlight off the album.
Hopefully one day Pixar will make a film score that needs a "Inception" feel. I really look forward to that day.
Agreed with Angry Bird on HTTYD. As a whole, the score was more sonically interesting and more unified than TS3's. Forbidden Friendship, Romantic Flight, Test Drive... definitely the high points of an already top-notch score, imo. TS3's score is effective, but a little scattershot thematically.
Anonymous #2: The score to Tangled wasn't entered for consideration either.
Sorry, but I don't think the score or the song are anything extraordinary. And the song was only in the credits anyway. I'll be surprised if it's even nominated.
While Toy Story 3 was indeed an excellent film, the musical score isn't up to par as being "Best Original Score." As of now, Inception, Tron: Legacy, and even How to Train Your Dragon have superior music.
