Nice for TS3, but I wish John Powell's HTTYD score was up here as well. Personally, I think it's my favourite of the year.

I really liked the scores for Alice in Wonderland, Sherlock Holmes, and Inception. If I was to put HTTYD in over one of the other nominees, it would be over either Avatar or, yes, TS3. It's not that I'm not a fan of those other works - it's just that I found it more memorable.

Yes! Go Randy, the score was as epic as the film!

What the hell?!? No "We Belong Together" nom? That song was incredible!

@MovieMusicEnthusiast

Exactly. Powell's HTTYD score is 1 million better than that crapy Randy's TS3 score.
They shouldn't nominate Randy's score.

You know, honestly, i hate most of the pixar's score( except ratatouille). I didn't found the scores memorable or great. This is what i don't like about Pixar: they don't pick other and BETTER composer for their film( the newmans must be retired).

Inception was my absolute favorite. TS3 felt far too darn recycled. Not just with previous TS movies, but of other Pixar movies. I recognized Monsters Inc at times. And in this case, it just doesn't work.

MME, if Sherlock Holmes were to get nominated, it would have been done last year (as the Oscars put it in for Best Original Score).

Anonymous #3: Yup. The only Pixar soundtracks I like *a lot* are Finding Nemo and WALL-E. "The Incredibles" was alright, but the jazzy feel didn't seem to fit the movie. "Ratatouille" was good at times, but it still seems to fail. And I haven't even tried "Up" yet.

I'm hoping that Randy can do something good with "Cars 2" by making great spy/action music, and not crappy recycled material. Saying that TS3 is a good shot for winning is like saying that the movie itself was worse than... well, whatever this year's worst movie is. You can see by now where I stand.

I hope "Inception" gets the win, but I really liked "Avatar" as well. "Sherlock Holmes" and its UN-Zimmer elements were terrible. "Alice in Wonder-land..." well, I've never been a fan of Elfman (except for his score on Mission Impossible).

"Inception" wasn't Zimmer's best, but it is for me the best score of the year. I personally love the tracks "Old Souls" and "528491" more than the two that are bigger hits. "HtTYD" had some be-awesome cues (thank you Powell!), but it didn't stick to them throughout the whole thing.

And back to you, Anonymous #3: Yes, I agree. Pixar needs to pick better composers for their films. I'd pick John Williams, but his time is over sadly. That also leaves Mr. Zimmer, Powell, James Horner... um... let me know if there's anybody I'm forgetting.

Actually Giacchino is doing Cars 2.

Good. The score won't be recycled. Considering that I've only liked "The Incredibles" score that much, I'm still a little doubtful to whether he can pull it off. But maybe I'm saying stuff too early.

All 11 Pixar scores have been excellent down to every last track!

Randy Newman's a genius and he showed that off completely in Toy Story 3. That score easily deserves to win the grammy!

Michael Giacchino's scores have also been flawless, and the jazzy style was tailor-made for The Incredibles and fit like a glove. PERFECT fit, excellent style for The Incredibles! Ratatouille was genious, and you're really missing out on Up (although you'd probably say it was "lame" or some such nonsense).

The Avatar score was pretty bland I'd say, meh to Horner, now that was recycled stuff.

And I'm sure Randy would have done a great job on the score for Cars 2 if Giacchino wasn't doing it (get your facts straight, "Pixar fan"). He did wonderful thrilling prison break, subterfuge music in '3' so I'm sure he could have easily pulled off spy music.

Pixar has three of the best composers working today doing their films. Of course, someone new would be gladly welcomed if they could do as good a job as Newman, Newman, and Mike.

Man, I wish you'd stop posting here Darrell. You always come across like a pretentious snarky pr**k!

Oh yeah, this goes for you too anonymous #3! The Newmans should not retire. Why would some of best composers of our time stop now when they're creating brilliant stuff? What an idiotic suggestion, you must feel like a real moron now that you've been called out as the fool you are!

Sorry for getting so heated Mike, but you can't insult the Pixar composers and get away with it. I hope you all keep your stupid opinions to yourself from now on.

Sherlock Holmes actually is up there.

The Grammy's eligibility year runs from October to August or something, so it's kind of like a school year.

Holmes was released last December, so since last Fall is included in this year's awards, it's there. Confusing? Yes.

Because i'm a big fan of Mr. Powell, do you think his score will be fit with Pixar's most anticipated movie, Brave? ( no more Newman, please )

Mike Giacchino is the best Pixar's composer if you ask me, so, i'll support him on Cars 2.

To lasseter: you choose different composer for WDAS's movie, and, they're great composers, but why you just pick the same and boring composer again and again for pixar's movies?

Not always do I come across like a "p**ck..." I'm here to tell people my opinions. Whether they agree with them or not is another matter. Some people disagree with me... for example, does the fact that I loved the "Cars 2" trailer make me a "p**ck?" Just putting some stuff into perspective here.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about "The Incredibles." As for "Ratatouille..." well, it's a French movie. So it has to be French-sounding. There's some good cues on it, but normally, I don't judge a score by how it fits the movie. I usually judge a score by how it sounds, and I just don't really care for the French sound much.

Sometimes I admit I get rather heated about my opinions (you should've seen the stir I caused on Blue Sky Disney when the Winnie the Pooh trailer came out). I didn't respect people's opinions very much then, and I do have some regrets about what I said. But it's too late...

Anyway, I am trying to respect people's opinions about Pixar scores here. YOU are certainly NOT respecting my opinions. Just because I dislike some film scores, does that make me a "p**ck?" Now how would YOU feel if you had said that the score for "Inception" was terrible, and I lashed out in the similar way that you did? See my point?

I'm the anonymous #3.

If you say that Randy Newman is the best composer out there, what do you think about this:

and this:

Both work created by other composer. What do you think now? Newman is still the best composer out there?

'Best composer' is subjective. Opinions are opinions, and I am very cautious about who I say is best.

Quite often the composer of my favourite score of the year is not the same one as the year before - or after. I judge by individual work, as well as body of work. Sometimes, one score seems like a letdown compared to what they've done in the past, sometimes it's precisely what you'd suspect, and other times, it exceeds all expectations.

Take HTTYD for instance. I like a lot of John Powell's other work, like Bolt (ton of fun), and figured I'd really like this one, but I loved it and now it's my favourite of the year...

Wow, take your meds anon #4.

Hey Darell, I'm sorry for going overboard (oh that goes for you too, anonomyous 3).

I really don't care if you don't like the scores, but I'm a big Newman fan, so it bothers me when people call his scores crap (they are NOT). I've seen this a few times in the last couple days and I just blew up, again sorry.

Hey Mike, you can get rid of that first post if you want, it was a bit too rude.

Darrell said...

Apology accepted... now note that I don't think that the Newman scores are crap at all. I don't listen to them much, but that doesn't mean I dislike them. And I think T. Newman is really good, especially with WALL-E. (His score was awesome for that!) And I think I would feel the way you did if someone called the score for "The Dark Knight" crap--I probably WOULD lash out in the same way if not worse.

Again, apology accepted... :)

Like others have said, I liked the TS3 score, but I think How to Train Your Dragon's score should have been nominated over TS3. Much better and more memorable. Hopefully, John Powell will receive his first Oscar nomination this year.

I think the Score for HTTYD was pretty generic and boring. Toy Story 3 was way better. But that's just my opinion.

Newman will win for sure.
