Cars 2 turntable: Lighting McQueen

This Cars 2 "Showroom Turntable" video of Lightning McQueen was uploaded to the Disney/Pixar YouTube channel on Friday. Somehow it evaded my notice until today.

Watch it below in HD.

Me too. I was hoping these designs wouldn't live to see a sequel. I could never get past those windshield eyes.

I personally find the windshield eyes ingenious... If you think about the anatomy of a car, the engine would be like the snout of a dog... So, the eyes are above.

Besides, when you drive, where do you see out of? The windshield. If they are going to be driving themselves, they would need eyes up that far, or else they couldn't see the road properly. It's the proper height for driving. The headlights would not be.

Picture if you were driving and looking out from where the headlights are instead of the windshield. It wouldn't work too well, now would it?

Granted, I do understand that Cars isn't for everyone, I just wanted to give my opinion behind the logic for it.

I wouldn't use the word ingenious - it seems to me like this was the design choice made because the world of Cars is a world without humans... So not only do we have these huge feilds of white for front windshields, the side windows are all opaque and deliberately shot at angles not to reveal the hollow interior. So we've got "design aware" camera work and a cyclops eye with two pupils.

Two final thoughts - in my worthless opinion I think the Cars world would have been more interested WITH humans - silent humans cut out of the frame, secondly, the windshelid eyes like we've seen in some aardman shorts is instantly more visually appealing. I do a lot of 3d modelling and character rigging and I can't imagine the grudging determination to create those nebulous windshield eyelids - to me, the design takes me out of the film. But I love Owen Wilson so it all evens out.

Cars isnt a bad movie. i understand that not everybody needs to like it, im just making a point that i think it gets a lot more bad criticizim than it needs.
