Dutch animation blog Animatie reports that Monsters, Inc. 2 will be a prequel to Monsters, Inc. rather than the sequel we've been expecting.
Their story apparently has its roots in a catalog distributed by Disney to theatre operators and was first posted on Disney Plaza Central, a French-language fan forum.
According to the rumor (and do treat it as such for the time being), the film will follow Mike and Sulley back when they were classmates—and rivals—at Monstropolis' University of Fear. Just how did they become best buddies?
A prequel from Pixar sounds like a great idea to me. It would explore the world of Monsters, Inc. from a decidedly original perspective. What about you? Be sure to leave your comment below. Start a conversation!
Monsters, Inc. 2 opens on November 2, 2012, exactly eleven years after the debut of the original.

i gotta admit, im still unsure about both Cars 2, and Monsters inc 2. A prequel is an interesting idea, its probably a better prospect than a straight up sequel. i still cant help feeling depressed that we'll have to wait a LONG time for the next original pixar story.
I think this would be a great way of enhancing the Monsters Inc world. They haven't done a prequel yet, so I'm sure if they were to do it, it would be a pretty solid affair
Hm... there's a lot of potential for a prequel. And to be honest, I never thought they could really do an actual sequel. So this news could actually be a bit comforting.
I like the idea of a prequel much, much better than a sequel. And considering the films will be eleven years apart, I think they could handle this like they did with Toy Story 3. By that, I mean have the prequel take place 11 years before the events of the first film (like how Toy Story 3 takes place in almost real-time after the second film).
I don't recall it ever being mentioned how old Mike and Sully are, but it could work.
Sounds cool, also means it may be closer to the original film that loads of us have been wanting.
This would be an interesting way to make another film. I'm not too sure if the 2nd film would be great if Boo becomes in trouble and they just go back and save her again... although knowing Pixar, they can pretty make anything enjoyable and interesting. :)
A prequel? Well, I was totally lukewarm on the idea of a sequel given just how neatly tied up the whole story was but a prequel, now that I'd like to see! Should be good to see Sulley, Mike and co in that sort of college capacity.
Absolutely brilliant idea!
I certainly hope this is true. I'd always kind of thought that Monster's Inc. seemed complete, so going backward instead of forward makes so much sense.
I don't know about this. I'm not so sure if a prequel about how Mike and Sully become friends is a story that really needs to be told at all.
.....yeah. Remember in the last movie at the end Sulley enters Boo's room after what might have been years of separation....are we just not going to acknowledge that? Honestly, the ending to the first one had excellent potential for a sequel. This idea feels forced and contrived compared to Pixar's former work. I'm preparing for the worse with this one.
Cars 2 should be fine as long they still have a good amount of Sally appearing. And I'm not sure about these rumors of a Holley Shiftwell x Mater thing.
Yeah, the next original Pixar film is "Brave," and I have to admit that I don't think I'll be seeing that one in theaters, which would be an all-time first for me, because of it being a chick flick instead of having an unlimited audience like with previous films (although TS3 isn't really a kid movie). And we don't have any other original stories announced... gulp... I wish they hadn't cancelled Newt...
This actually makes a lot more sense to me than a direct sequel, since almost everyone I know thinks that Monsters Inc has one of Pixar's best endings.
I think this will be really entertaining as long as the only conflict isn't just Mike and Sulley becoming friends. (You know, since we know that happens already)
I wonder if Randall will still play a roll at all? If he IS still the main/secondary Antagonist, he'll need to be secretive and not necessarily discovered yet...
I wasn't too keen on the idea of a sequel, but I agree that a prequel sounds much better! This way we can have more to the story without detracting from the beautiful resolution of the first movie.
Let's hope this is true. :)
It sounds cooler than a direct sequel to me. I like the ending of Monsters, Inc. as a hanger. My only concern is how much progress Pixar has made with fur and hair systems; would it look silly if Sulley goes from great looking, realistic fur to the original version? It WAS the first movie they needed individual hairs for and they really nailed the technique ever since.
I think this is great news - thanks for sharing, Mike! Fingers crossed that this is true...
I'd love to see these characters, which are some of my favourites, back on screen, but never quite warmed up to the idea of them messing with the perfectly touching ending of the original.
As for the hair and fur, hopefully they would just use the same models and not change the look of the characters.
Well, they always remodel, but like Toy Story, I presume (and hope) that they would keep them close to the original.
The old models have to be redone anyway to fit with the more advanced technology and animation programs.
But I get what you're saying - essentially, model the characters off of the original movie. Makes sense.
@Darrell "because of it being a chick flick"
That`s really narrow minded. It`s like saying "I won`t watch Toy Story 3 because it`s an animated movie and animated movies are for kids."
Guys aren't supposed to watch chick flicks. That's my point, and it has nothing to do with the fact that some people might say "adults aren't supposed to watch animated movies."
Just because it has a female main character, doesn't make it a 'chick-flick'.
Are films with male protagonists guy's films? No.
I'm sure Brave will have a wide audience appeal. It's the story that counts. If that's done right, then it will be good. If not, like other films, it won't be.
I am liking this idea a lot.
Well, I highly doubt Pixar's making an animated Sex and the City 2! I think it will be just like any other Pixar film, just with a female main character instead of a male.
Other people have already said it's going to be a chick flick (although perhaps not with that specific phrase). Sorry, but unless I find out for certain that it's from a wider audience, then I'm just not as interested as usual when it comes to Pixar.
One thing I do highly doubt on the bright side is that Pixar isn't making an R-rated movie (in reference to Sex and the City 2). :)
How can anyone know what it is yet?
It doesn't sound like something primarily for girls...
It sounds like an adventure story, that if it had a male main character, no one would even be wondering about this.
Yeah... Sex and the City 2 really wasn't that good at all! We can all be glad that we probably won't ever see PIXAR doing a film like that... ;)
I guess once we get a trailer for Brave, we'll know for sure what it will more likely be about.
I'm sure it will have a cool factor to it.
All though I (being male) have interest in Brave. I feel like I am the first person uncomfortable with the idea of a prequel for Monsters Inc. I have always been worried about this movie because all though I have a curiosity for the future of Boo, I was very satisfied with the ending the movie had. Fearfully I thought they would go for the monsters getting lost in the real world approach, so a prequel would get rid of this possibility. But to me, the best part about Pixar sequals, is that your attachment and concern for the characters fate is idolized in a viewers eyes. And a prequel wouldn't really let you think about the future of the characters. But, Pixar hasn't dissapointed yet, so we'll see how this works out.
I didn't like the news saying it's going to be a prequel.Monsters Inc 2 movie has to be a sequel, in continuation to what the previous movie had left us with.To whether Boo,Mike and Sully will be reunited again or not.
I wonder what this will be like. The original was one of the best movies (nest to Cars of course :D) i can't wait to see what this turns out to be!
I like the prequel idea, but only if they agree to do a third movie as well.
I want to see what happens to Boo when she enters high school and has a visit from some old friends.
i hope we do see Boo at some point though :( she is by far one of the cutest little character's they've come up with!
I think either way they go could have great potential. I would only want a sequel to see what happens to her. Otherwise, a prequel sounds like a great idea! First time for everything!
I agree, it is a pity they canceled Newt :(
