Disney/Pixar confirmed today that the follow-up to Monsters, Inc.—previously referred to as "Monsters, Inc. 2"— will be a prequel entitled Monsters University. The announcement was made a few hours ago at the CinemaCon motion picture theatre industry convention in Las Vegas.
This confirms the story, first reported in January, that the movie will follow Sulley and Mike Wazowski back when they were classmates at Monstropolis' University of Fear.
“Obviously everybody knows at this point Mike and Sully are amazing friends—the best of friends—but as it turns out, in this story, that wasn’t always the case," said Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive vice president of worldwide distribution.
"From the moment they met at university, they could not stand each other. This story takes you through the ups and downs, and how they overcame their own differences.”
Disney insider Floyd Norman tweeted on Friday that Pixar was screening the film at Disney's lot in Burbank—undoubtedly an early storyboard version. "Welcome back, Mike and Sully, we've missed you. Yeah, you too, Randall," he later wrote.
So what do you think of the title? The fact that it's a prequel? Randall? After minutes, the title is already growing on me. Can only image how cool the 'Monsters U' logo will be.
Monsters University opens on November 2, 2012.

Please! Monster's was the only thing that got me through being sick multiple times. I love Pixar and only dream of working there some day. Thank you for listening, Sulley...or Mike...or Randall..??
I'm so afraid Pixar is screwing up a bit. I love this studio so much, but I think they need to worry less about continuing the Monsters Inc, Cars and Toy Story franchises and pay more attention to how they can stay fresh.
A prequel isn't "fresh" enough for ya?
I understand your comment, Jeff, but Toy Story was quite possibly the best film Pixar has done, and with Brave coming soon I think they're maintaining a good balance between new and old.
Yeah, how dare they make Toy Story 2 and 3. Basically just recaps of 1, right, Jeff?
Amazing stories, who cares if they're sequels. Keep in mind that Monsters U is coming out the same year as Brave.
Fascinating news. There are so many directions this could go. I wonder if it'll have outdated monster fashion, as compared to the original? A constructed past could be a lot of fun. But I'm not sure entirely how it could work. Of course, Toy Story 3 was amazing, and there's no reason that should've worked.
Just out of curiosity, has anyone in the history of film ever pulled off a prequel?
Wow, I'm SO excited for this!!!
Perfect way to preserve the ending of the first film, yet explore the universe and characters in a compelling way. Making it a brother story, charting the arc of their reluctant relationship, sounds like a brilliant move.
I'm so excited for this movie. I'm a little worried about Pixar going into a trend of sequels, but what with Toy Story 2 and 3, they have proved apt with sequels. Can't complain that they don't know what they're doing, though, right?
It's funny, but i really want to see this! I mean, at the very beginning i thought a sequel was lame, then -when it was announced that it would be a prequel- nothing actually changed within me. But now, with this new description, it's really dawning on me how good and emotional this can be.
And i bet the Monster University logo will be just as or more cool as the Monsters, Inc. logo (:
Oh please stop all this hostility against poor Jeff Coté. You all are forgetting that the comments section was made for speaking our minds, rather than shutting others' minds.
And as for his comment, i completely agree with him. I love the idea of Monsters Univesity, but newt shouldn't have been cancelled.
I think the mark of a Pixar films is that it makes me worry about their ability to pull it off.
Toy Story 3 having to live up to the previous films, Finding Nemo making fish relatable, The Incredibles using made up superheroes AND being set in a world populated entirely with people, Wall-E not having any dialogue for 70% of the movie, Up being about an old man, Ratatouille being about a cooking rat... and now Cars 2 having to make up for the lukewarm reaction to the first film, and now Monsters University having to overcome not being the sequel people were hoping for...
I'm skeptical. I mean, I see this more for a short or special than something theatrical. I just hope they don't plan to do another sequel for Cars or Monster's Inc....or even Ratatouille. Just want to see more original story lines from Pixar.
I think the coolest part about the title is that it isn't simply just another number sequel. I wish Cars 2 would still have been called 'Cars: World Grand Prix'
Dude, you think Toy Storys 2 and 3 were recaps of 1?! O_____o I mean, yes, there are some mild similarities... Andy's toys get lost, must find their way back to him... but what else do you think they could do in Andy's room? A mutiny? Sorry, but I think those were the only options Pixar had when it came to trying to come up with a good new "toys missing" plot.
I'm not sure what to think here about Monsters 2. A sequel would've been nice, but I think they already detailed the ideas that could've been used in the BOOM! comics. So maybe a prequel could actually turn out really good.
Maybe Pixar could hire Aaron Sorkin to write the intelligent, dialogue-heavy screenplay.…:b
cant wait
It's gonna be an awesome poke at the 80s/90s if they decide to incorporate elements of human's world into monsters' world.
Aaron Sorkin? Would be neat, plenty of talk and walk shots and poorly written female characters, couldn't fail!
I have mix fillings about this one I was hopping to see an older Boo, but maybe the movie will have a flash-back form...
BTW -> Wasen't a cartoon base on this idea? Monsters going to school were they lern how to scare people? "Aaaaah! Real Monsters" or something?
Well this looks just wonderful! And what I've heard about Pixar becoming less original, all I have to say is that I could care less about all the sequels. Pixar will always be Pixar.
I always wondered how they would make a prequel with the ending "Monsters, Inc." had...I guess the solution is to avoid it! I think that's funny. It's all good. I'm excited for this film too. However, I don't want Pixar to fall into a sequel (in this case prequel) rut. The idea of a monster college sounds pretty sweet, though...
What would the school mascot be?
a hugging bear!
I would actually prefer a prequel to a sequel, I think. If I had to choose.
My only thing is though, that in prequels they usually feel a need to shoehorn characters in who wouldn't normally have known eachother yet/haven't met in the timeline yet. Just how many future MI scarers/assistants are we gonna see?
Also, haven't Mike & Sulley been friends since they were little? I distinctly remember a line about them being in the fourth grade together. Not meaning to be nit-picky....
I don't know how exactly I feel about this. I don't think could let me down in quality. But the whole "prequel" makes me feel really uncomfortable... It just seems a bit... dare I say it, Corny? It will be good, I just don't like the whole idea of it
