Disney/Pixar just released this brand new piece of concept art from Brave. (See the artwork released yesterday.) It's our best glimpse yet of the lead character, Princess Merida.

So this is what they mean by "gritty". Merida doesn't look like, you know, a cute princess in any way shape or form.
lol... Critics against artwork... I don't think this is actually meant to show the exact shape of Merida's face. And as for her looks, well, she doesn't look that obedient either. The only thing i'd criticize would be the horse -it's a chubby one...
I'm not surprised that she's a redhead. Still, the movie looks awesome. Since John Lasseter is a big Studio Ghibli fan it's not a surprise. I bet the artist's inspiration for this film included 'Princess Mononoke'.

Somehow, this reminds me of Studio Ghibli film. :)
I just hope that she doesn't have the same face that every other Pixar girl has (I'd hardly call this "gritty").
She reminds me of my sister: fiery, smart, and dead on. Love it. :) Hopefully her two sisters are just as pretty/gritty.

It looks like Daisuke Tsutsumi's style and art direction, similar brush strokes like the one he used for toy story 3's art.
I'm all for chubby horses.
Very excited about this movie.
