'Monsters U' pushed back to June 2013

Box Office Mojo is reporting, and an independent source confirms, that the release date for Monsters, Inc. prequel Monsters University has been pushed back to June 21, 2013.

This is the third opening date for Monsters University—which we used to call "Monsters, Inc. 2"—since it was officially announced last April.

Most recently, the film was scheduled to open on November 2, 2012—exactly eleven years after the arrival of Monsters, Inc.

This gives the impression that Pixar don't think that they will have the next film after Monsters University ready for 2013 (or at least for mid 2013) and are worried about risking having a barren year.

Hmm, something seems amiss at Pixar given they did ditch a whole film in pre-production and the film to replace it in the schedule has been re-scheduled twice since it was announced.

The new date of June 2013 isn't so bad as that's pretty much in line with the usual yearly release schedule but you've got to wonder what's going on which is causing such setbacks, innocuous or not.

Big disappointment :(

Well............I guess that means we'll be keeping up the trend of one Pixar a movie a year.

This might not be a bad thing, guys.

Well, if it gives them time to work on it, then I wont complain. I don't want them to feel stretched too thin, especially for a prequel. Besides, Pixar has been releaseing all their films in June these past/future years, and Brave will still be released, so it wont be an empty year.

These date changes are a bit concerning. :(

Dang, this is really disappointing.

At least we still have "Brave" next year!

(Hopefully)

More than disappointing, i'd say it's concerning, as Jay.CA said. Perhaps releasing two movies each year, though it's ambitious, is just not for Pixar. Or at least not until Phase II is inaugurated...
But this makes me wonder, what has Pixar Canada been doing?

Why??? I was really looking forward to two Pixar movies in one year! All well, at least this tells us that theyre not rushing movies or anything like that, I think...

Man... that's too bad. :(

I think the story that's being reported has it the wrong way around.

This move seems to me as more of a vote of confidence in WDA's Reboot Ralph (which is taking MU's Nov 2nd spot) than a lack of confidence in Pixar's Monsters University.

They only slated two Pixar films for 2012 because Walt Disney Animation didn't have a film to offer that year, but if they're confident enough that "Reboot Ralph" (which had originally been slated for March 2013) can be completed for 2012, they don't need the extra Pixar film.

The only real question in all this is, what now happens to the further films that had been in the works? Delayed as well, or will they instead double up some other year?

I'd rather them stuck to one amazing film a year then forgo quality and try to churn them out three times a year like DWA, which are usually disappointing.

There could be a number of reasons why it's been pushed back. Perhaps they don't think it'll be done in time? or the film after Monsters U is hitting some bumps and they don't want to risk having no film for 2013? Perhaps it is because of the Reboot Ralph theory.

Either way, 2013 could be the year we see 2 Pixar films. It would have been cool to see it exactly 11 years after the original, though.

Evidently these poor people are scared of putting a film out any other time rather than the summer. Brave was pushed back as well from Christmas 2011 to June 2012. And now MI 2 is getting pushed back as well.

The summer may be the hottest time for movies, but fall/winter films work too sometimes! Toy Story 2 broke the Thanksgiving records when it was released.

I would be disappointed if she doesn't ):

I wonder if this means that they're simply needing MORE work done on brave, thatt they're putting more people on it... which would be preferable. Pixar hasn't shyed away from restarting movie production half-way through to do rewrites, maybe the origin story of sully and mike is lacking either a natural flow, continuity, or enough originality on its own, or maybe with the mediocre reviews that Cars 2 has received, they re-realized (after what they did for ts2) that they need to put as much effort into their sequels and prequels as they do into their normal movies... So many options I would say the last one makes most sense, judging by pixars art ethics...
