State Farm/Cars 2 commercial

State Farm Insurance, lead sponsor of the Cars 2 "Agents on a Mission" tour, is promoting a new TV ad starring Mater, Holley, and Finn.

The commercial will begin airing in the U.S. tomorrow night with the season finale of American Idol.

Oh, and it's truly awful. Nothing genuinely funny, no heart; even the voice work is awful.

I won't claim to fully understand it, but you gotta give it a little credit in terms of the pet shop. little planes as birds, little trains as snakes.

You are correct in saying that it isn't very funny but at least they didn't just cruise up, look in the camera and say "We're cars, cars need to be protected, buy insurance."

That would be awful.
And expecting HEART from an insurance commercial is a very silly thought.

Maybe not awful. Those little train snakes were cute.

Yeah, I forgot to give credit to the pet store. Awesome creativity going on. I liked the little trains and little planes but you can't forget the little cars that look like hamsters!

I love the pet store - and for an ad it's alright. After all, it isn't and is never meant to be a short film with time to develop a ton of heart. It's an insurance commercial and an ok one at that.

Is it not Pixar-animated?

That wasn't awful that was great! Sheesh you didn't expect another 90 minute pixar hit did you?

I don't know about this particular commercial, but in the past such adds have often been animated by interns.

Yeah, 'truly awful' is such a ridiculous over exaggeration. Not sure what's been down your pants but you've been posting some ass opinions lately. Everyone is subject to their own opinion, but with so many readers you'd expect a blog like this to hold back a bit as to not offend anybody who might really like something like this.

I'm sorry! I have opinions!

Opinions are fine - I was just surprised at the finality of the opinion. Something more along the lines of "I thought it was truly awful." was what is more what I would have expected to see. The wording just made it sound like this would be everyone's opinion... Which it is clearly not.

What's wrong with this? I thought it was great, can't remember ever having seen a better insurance commercial!

But I, too, am interested in knowing whether Pixar Canada made this or not. Any idea, Mike?

(Love your blog, by the way!)

I was disappointed by this too - not form a technical standpoint, but the fact that these Disney / Pixar characters are hocking insurance. That's mega weak. State Farm must have paid a mint for it.

Well, I kinda liked it. The voice actors did okay, considering they probably didn't have a lot of time to practice. For an ad, this is good animation. Not horrible.

Brent: That wasn't an issue for me at all. I think cross-promotion is fine, as long as it's done well.

It's fine, not particularly memorable, as a freaking INSURANCE commercial. I'd expect more from a short film or movie clip. But this is...fine. No need to panic.

I think that's what Mike didn't like about it....
the commercial was just... fine.

Nothing special about it, which is a bit of a waste with such great characters and story possibilities.

Yeah, sure, it's JUST an insurance commercial, but when you think Pixar, the next thought is NEVER mediocre... and that's what this commercial was.... at it's best!

If you're gonna animate Pixar characters AND sell insurance at the same time (which you can, no problem).... why not utilize the medium and add some HEART for crying out loud!

I think you have to remember that isn't a pixar advert for Cars 2, this is a state farm advertisement, and they are the client here.

I would like to personally think that the "lack of heart" is due to the fact that client's don't want to show heart, they want to make money.

And can you really show heart selling insurance? with Cars 2 characters? I'm not sure you can with that kind of time either.

So, I think the commercial was pretty good considering these factors.

Look, despite the obvious artful craftsmanship and attention to detail - the Cars film franchise is FOR KIDS. You can't slice it two ways, G rating, big eyed cartoonie characters, I'm okay, you're okay storyline, it is childrens entertainment - (Also good for kids of all ages). The point; who are the kids who need to buy auto insurance? Maybe Im over thinking it...

I loved it. It was done by Pixar.

I saw another "Cars 2" ad for Target when I saw Kung Fu Panda 2 at the theater. It was really good, and it had Francesco along with Minnie and Lightning in it.

I can't find it on YouTube.

Off-topic, but Jordan, what did you think of KFP 2?

The ad went too quickly... it had good ideas, but should have been a minute long instead of 30 seconds. As it is, I barely catch their clever moments, and am left with a blah feeling at the end.
