Last Tuesday, I had the chance to sit down for a chat with comedian Larry the Cable Guy, who reprises his role as Mater in Cars 2.
Sprawled out on a hotel couch, Larry answered a bunch of questions, sharing his feelings on Mater, the Cars franchise, and his hopes for (and possibly a hint about) a Cars 3.
I can relate to Mater.
On a personal level? Like when he’s out of place at the gala in Tokyo. Have you felt that in your life enough that you can bring it to the character?
I felt that at dinner today—at lunch—when I went down to eat lunch. We go to this nice restaurant. I’m dressed like this, people are in suits—business attire—I come walking in, in shorts, this shirt that says Stinky’s on it, and a ball cap. I got some looks.
I felt like all eyes were on me, like, look at this guy. That’s how Mater feels when he goes to all these other places. But the cool thing about Mater—and about me—is, I don’t care how you dress, I don’t care what you do for a living; as long as you’re a nice person, you’re awesome. You know what I mean?
So he’s not into all that kind of stuff. As you can tell, I couldn’t care less about how I look. I mean, I’m not going to dress like white trash, you know what I mean, but I’m gonna—you know—I want to dress comfortable.
I’m comfortable. I’m comfortable in this, Mikey. You know what I mean. I’m a fat guy; I don’t like to tuck in. I can’t; it looks bad. Until I lose weight, this is how I’m dressed.
And I’m comfortable with that. That’s how Mater is. Mater’s awesome.
Who did you do more of your recording sessions with, John [Lasseter] or Brad [Lewis]?
John. I started out with Brad and went to John. I guess the movie needed a little bit of fixing up. They needed to, I guess—from what I understand—they wanted to fix a couple of things. They wanted to make sure they did a nice tribute to Paul Newman and so they kind of reworked some things.
And that’s when John got involved, ‘cause they just weren’t really happy with it in the beginning. And it’s just awesome [now]. I mean, they couldn't have done any better.
So I started with Brad, went with John. And Brad was still in there, though. So it was kind of a group effort. It took a group effort for this one. But it was great, it turned out great, and I don’t think they could have done a better job at beating the first [Cars].
There are a few laugh-out-loud moments in the movie, a lot of action. What’s your favorite scene?
Well [Mater] says so many things that are funny. When I screened the movie, every time Mater said something—except towards the end when he found out that people were laughing at him—but in the beginning, the first two-thirds of the movie, everything Mater said the crowd laughed at.
And you’re talking about the belly laughs, I belly laughed too. And I did the freakin’ line. I just forgot what I [had said] and I was, “Oh yeah, that was funny!”
The wasabi?
The wasabi is one of my favorite parts. [Mater voice] “Ooh, I want some of that pistachio ice cream?” Yeah, that was good stuff. That one, and probably the bathroom in Japan are probably my two best favorite scenes.
I like the one with the note. (Readers will have to see the movie to know what we were talking about here.)
[laughs]
That's hilarious... I like when Mater’s a waiter too.
What does Larry the Cable Guy drive?
Ford F250 and I also have a Dodge Challenger. Oh, and I did get one another vehicle that I don’t really drive a lot, but I got it because Lasseter picked me up in it a couple of times and it’s one of my all time favorite sports cars. But I really don’t drive it a lot, it’s more to look at. A Mercedes-Benz SL55.
That’s cool.
And I gotta tell you, it is so good looking. I bought it after the first Cars movie, a year after the first Cars movie came out—no, two years after—so it’s a 2008, and it’s only got 4200 miles on it.
You have to take it out more often.
I know, I do, but I have my truck which I love and then the Dodge Challenger is sweet! I take it when I take my wife out on a date, so that’s why it doesn’t get used a lot [laughs]. We never have time to go on a date!
I know you can’t say whether it’s happening or not, but are you hoping for a Cars 3?
Oh yeah, totally. And probab... [doesn’t finish the word] You know, yeah.
Just because it’s such a fun franchise. And as long as we’re still sellin’ the merchandise, and as long as people are going to see the movies, and people are buying [Cars Toons: Mater’s Tall Tales]... we’re going to do more ‘Mater Tales’. We’re doing more of those. And hopefully we’ll see a Cars 3 and hopefully it’s not going to be six years from now. Hopefully we’ll cut that in half and hopefully they’ll start working on a Cars 3 in a couple of years.
So you’re hoping to get the call?
Yeah, I’m hoping. And if I don’t—look—I’m happy with the ones we did. I’ll always be a part of Pixar history and I’ll be happy in the fact that I was the best-selling animated character of all time for Pixar. That’s awesome. It really is awesome. I mean—honestly—I am so thankful, I am so grateful, I never thought I would do anything like that. It’s just cool.

I couldn't disagree more with Larry The Cable Guy [concerning the Cars 3 section]. I mean, he's saying that he'd like it if there was a Cars 3 in 2013 or 2014? PLEASE NO! I'd rather watch Shrek 7th or something... No, I wouldn't.
But please, I couldn't resist another year without the usual Pixar Summer Expectation* which I don't feel this year. I really hope there's nothing in the works right now, and that there won't be within 10 years at least.
I mean, what could Cars 3 possibly be about? Lightning and Mater meet a DeLorean time machine who warns them about their sorry future and their pathetic past and take off for an adventure in time in order to fix this? Wait! It's always been that way and neither a DeLorean, nor Cars 3 can fix it!
*A term coined by me in order to describe the feeling of hope and anticipated amazement I get whenever a new Pixar feature is about to be released. It usually kicks in along with the film's teaser or first trailer, increases exponentially as the release date approaches, and reaches its peak while queuing in the theatre with incredibly high hopes which are entirely fulfilled once the movie ends.
Um, see, now I'm going to be wondering about and specifically looking for that note and/or waiter scene.
Cars 3!!! AWESOME!!! I hope that is true!!!
If they announce a Cars 3, I will buy a ticket for it tomorrow. I love the Cars world.
Hmmm... "Mikey"...
Looks like you have a new nickname.
I liked the first Cars, but I wouldn't want Pixar to do a third. It will be nice to get some original movies, starting with Brave.
Spoilers! Spoilers!! SPOILERS!!!!
If you're going to discuss things in the movie, please PLEASE PLEASE!! Note that this has spoilers... ugh
oh and please don't do a Cars 3... Just no.
you got to meet him? so cool! and Cars 3? SWEET! Cars is my all time favorite Pixar movie.
Oh come on, really? Cars 3?
I really loved Cars, and it's one of my favorite Pixar movies.
When I learned there was going to be a Cars 2, I was like "Fantastic ! We will see again that great world of cars"...
I am still actually really looking forward to that movie.
But now, there's Cars, Cars Toons, Cars 2, the upcoming Planes... That's a lot of movie for that one world !
And a Cars 3 ??...
They risk to squeeze too much the lemon...
But after all, they did the same thing with Toy Story...
Trust me, give it a chance and go see Cars 2 - you will have a good time! It is an excellent spy film.
Oh, and great interview Mike!
If There are making a cars 3 which i hope NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Then Make A TOY STORY 4 before that
If there is a cars 3 my son would flip out but if they take for ever on making again which I think will.. Ugh he will be out of the mqueen n mater phase. His grNdmothr bought.him pretty much a whole room of mqueen n also more liuigi n guido in it if it is being made.. Haha my somes 3 and loves cars we took him to watch cars 2 in theater he flippd it was cute he was 2 going on 3 at the time n he owns all the toons n moviea. He has all the toys from books with toys n maps to the big car tracks he even has to have anything mater n mqueen kind of candy n of course I vreak down n get it as a mother with a child whom loves mqueen. mater. Guido. Luigi. Mcmissle. All of em keep em comin for more children to watch :) just like toy story. It was new when I was youngr n now my son watches them all lol start cars like it.. It is about the children.. :)
Well, regarding a Cars 3, I just hope it's more than what we give Disney-Pixar credit for. Last year they made a movie that made so much but was valued and reviewed so little.
Toy Story 3 was a big hit. Why can't Cars 3 be? Oh, that's right: because Cars 2 sucked. But you never know, right, but we can't risk keeping our hopes high anymore. McQueen was in the front of the poster, yet he's a deuteragonist. Ironic, yes? Stupid? Definitely. A poster is a small preview on a movie, and that poster wasn't.
I can go on, but I can't go on.
In my opinion, all that Cars 2 had to offer was the characters. :/
These cartoons are all about the kids and the kids Love cars, my little boys loves all things cars and "Lightning Mcqueen" was his first big word I would be first in line to take him to a 3rd movie.
Cars 3 thats awesome Cars is my all time favorite Pixar movie and it would be better if they will make another 10 or 100 cars movie my friends and family will watch it all for sure CARS ROCKS!
Cars is my favorite animated movies series. Im not even young. Need to go buy me some toys now! please keep making cars!!!!
What cars 3 could be about is sally and McQueen finally getting married but than something happens and McQueen has to choose between sally or mater and he chooses mater because mater went on a secret mission and got in serious trouble and needs help and McQueen of course will go help his best friend and so sally and him call off the wedding and their in the middle of a fight while McQueen goes and saves mater in stead of fixing the problem/ matter with sally and him and the possible future for them two together. Also I am soooooooooo happy their making a third one I hope they could make like a TV series too like on cartoon network and have many of seasons too I just can't wait to be be amazed by another amazing cars movie. :-)
The third one could be about McQueen and sally settling down and getting married but they have a fight and call the wedding off and while their fighting something happens to mater while he's on a secret mission and he needs help and so McQueen goes to help save mater and leaves sally while in the middle of their fight. I hope they can also maybe start making a cartoon cars TV show with many seasons. I just love all the cars. :-)
If they make a third movie it will be awesome I mean why not they , made toy story 1 2 toy story toons and 3 make the cars 3 or toy story 4!
