Tom Hanks says Pixar working on Toy Story 4 [UPDATE]

Hanks with Lee Unkrich during a recording session for Toy Story 3

Sitting down with the BBC to promote his new film Larry Crowne, Tom Hanks was asked about his new granddaughter and whether 'there will be a Toy Story 4 for her to see'.

"I think there will be, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I think they’re working on it now," he told interviewer Tim Muffett. "There you go." (Watch video starting at 2:28.)

Before you get all excited (or upset, as the case may be) this could be just a big slip-up. Maybe Hanks had future Toy Story Toons on his mind and that's what he was referring to.

But what strikes me is Hanks' demeanor as he says it—he seems really serious, almost worried that he's spilled the beans on something he shouldn't have.

This is exactly the kind of drumbeat we got before Cars 2 was officially announced.
-----
Update: He said it again!

"I understand it's happening and if it is, I hope they'll hire me." Hanks tells CNN/HLN's Showbiz Tonight.

There you go, people. There you go.

more importantly, since when did the phrase I THINK (used twice) translate into I KNOW?

I think he's "serious" because the question literally comes out of nowhere at the extreme last few seconds of the interview. It's just Tom being Tom, and he gave a straight-faced answer to cover up his "where the hell did that come from?!" reaction, inside.

I was 10% worried about this when I saw the quote on /Film, but it seems pretty clear to me that he just made that up on the spot and that it isn't actually on the way.

Let's get a comment from @leeunkrich

Is that our secret Pixar project for 2013? Man, that would be a huge letdown after Brave if it was true.

Nobody know, don't know if Tom fully does but I do have my apprehensions and I figured the Toy Story Toons would pretty much operate as followup with the new toys and the others.

Mike Bastoli said...

No, secret 2013 project is going to be original.

Did they edit the toy story 4 comment out of the video? I went to 2:28 like you said and the comment is nowhere to be found. Did Pixar catch wind of this and is trying to backpedal out of it?

omg pixar......please don't. just please DO NOT. Toy story was about andy and his toys. toy story 3 ended it so perfectly. please don't ruin it! I don't care how good the story is, please, please, please don't. Andys older now. and plus, Don Rickles is getting old......who knows when his time is.......I don't want a toy story without mr. potato head......so please keep these things in mind.......

Another sequel??? PIXAR, WE WANT ORIGINAL STORIES!!! I dont believe though that they re making ts4...but i am almost sure (& not happy for that) that till the end of the year FindingNemo2 will have been announced

i want to see A Bug's Life 2 in the near future.. probably wont happen tohugh. bugs life is one of my favorite Pixar movies.. it was better than cars.. and it deserves a sequel

Mike Bastoli said...

Kyle: Keep watching.

All I can say is: This better be false. Pixar ended Toy Story perfectly and it was clearly the end. It just...was. Toons I'm fine with, but NO MORE MOVIES PLEASE!

No!

The only reason I'd want to see a new Toy Story movie is if they took all the Pixar films and brought in all the "toys" from their other Pixar films and turned it into a fierce gritty drama about a group therapy project in which the 'toys' from, Toy Story, A Bugs Life, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Wall-e and Up discuss the immense stress of trying to live up to the expectations of their owners all the while living through horrible abuse, albeit from daycar/preschoolers, toddlers, young children, teenagers and adults.

The Movie should transitions through various storylines which begin in the group therapy setting and we hear/see each toy talk/live through their abuse and issues and what it's like to be "A Pixar Toy".

Don't worry everybody, it's not happening. I don't know why Tom said it, joking maybe, or meant the 'Toons', but whatever he meant, it's not happening. You can take my word for that.

Alexandro Fantino said...

He's joking, of course. You can tell by the way he said it. What I love to see is a great amount of comments saying 'please don't [make toy story 4.]' It seems that after all, sequels aren't as 'healthy' for Pixar as most of you used to think, eh? Muahahaha

P.S: Sorry, I was dying to say that.

Darrell said...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Please don't make a Toy Story 4! You already did very poorly with the new Toy Story Toon. Let them go, Pixar! Toy Story is dead.

I will be very, very disappointed if there is indeed a TS4.

Jeff Coté said...

OH, PLEASE TELL ME HE'S WRONG.

Another anonymous can also confirm a nope.

Ugh, why? Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to the series. I'm squeamish about the Toons, let alone a whole fourth movie.

If Pixar makes Toy Story 4, they can go to Hell. I don't care how good it is.

This sequel crap needs to stop.

Anonymous said...

stop hating on toy story 4 it is problally gonna be the best pixar movie better then cars 2 was. thats why pixar is gonna make toy story 4 so they can make up for how bad cars 2 was

Andrew said...

God, this would be HORRIBLE news if it turned out to be true.

In one sense, because Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to the series and it would greatly lessen THAT movie's impact to do anything more than shorts from here on out.

But the primary reason it's a horrible idea is that Pixar making sequels in GENERAL is a bad idea. I would not be opposed to the OCCASIONAL Pixar sequel every few years (especially if one happened to star a certain family whose name rhymes with inedibles). But the reason Pixar is great is that they make some of the most original, charming and heartwarming films in Hollywood. Fans want more of this creative and original content, not more rehashes.

Especially having just come of off Toy Story 3 (brilliant thought it was), Cars 2 (the sequel literally no one asked for) and the upcoming Monsters Inc 2 (loved the first one but never felt it needed a sequel/prequel/whatever)...if Pixar made another sequel this soon I think it would be a deathblow to their popularity.

Please, Pixar, make original movies with only sparse sequels, if any at all. I love you too much to see you become a sequel factory!

The one thing I can still say I respect about Disney Animation Studios is they've only made 2 sequels in their time. The Rescuers Down Under and the new Winnie the Pooh film. (I don't count the direct-to-video crapquels from the 90's/early00's). I'm referring to original theatrical releases meant for the big screen and animated by the in-house(of mouse) studio.

I'm sure I share the opinion with many when I say I sure hope he's talking about recording more Toy Story Toons, or perhaps some TV specials made by Pixar Canada. Not a full movie. Toy Story 3 was really good, and a fantastic ending to the series. I want to see the characters again, but Toy Story ended with 3.

Anonymous said...

Hey, what did I say?!? I said they're not making '4', now stop your worrying. Yeesh!

Jordan said...

I think he was referring to future "Toy Story Toons" shorts. I don't know if that makes me care what anyone else thinks.

Please return the TOYS to Andy when he gets married and has his own children. Pixar has broken many childrens hearts who grew up with Woody and Buzz. We need to see this for closure and a happy ending for once! Andy needs his TOYS for his children now. A legacy to hand down. Wasn't that the whole point of the TOY STORY??????? Together forever never give them up! To infinity and beyond!!!!!!

The fall of Pixar? Seriously? They've made 3 sequels total and all have been successful. I would love to have a new Toy Story adventure.

Cars 2 I'll see, but part 1 wasn't my thing. I worked at an elementary and Cars is a BIG DEAL. Kids love that movie way more than adults.

Hope they continue to revisit their franchises. I think we all live in fear of a "direct-to-video" disney-style Pixar emerging. They have shown no signs of that.

Yay Toy Story 4 i hope andy gets his toys back and gives them to his son

Oh boy, I've got mixed feelings about this one. If this story had appeared this time last year, I would've shouted, "NO!" just like everyone else, because the third movie had such a perfect ending to the trilogy.

And yet, I got such a happy, giddy feeling inside while I was watching "Hawaiian Vacation," and it made me realize how much I love those characters and want to see more of them. So, I really want to say, "More Toy Story movies? AWESOME!" But at the same time, I'm afraid of them running out of steam if they keep making new full-length installments to Toy Story.

This anonymous person says yes. Sorry guys.

Hanks = officially my least favorite person in the world right now. Until further notice. There you go.

Anonymous said...

...What? Seriously, what?!

Anonymous said...

There is no way in hell Disney is going to walk away from making another billion dollars, no matter how much Pixar objects.

Anonymous said...

im pretty sure he meant that work had started on the short airing infront of the muppets :/ i dont want another film. theres nothing for it really to be about

Anonymous said...

"this anonymous person says yes. sorry guys."

As Filmore would say... "Ignore him!"

He's talking about the Toys Story Toons, then. HE MUST BE!!! (People, meet my denial phase)

I loved Toy Story 3, but I don't want a 4th one. It just doesn't seem necessary movie. It would still probably be good but I can see that people aren't very happy about it. I think that other companies like Dreamworks are okay with making tons of sequels because most of their movies arent very good anyway, but Pixar makes good movies that are actually worth watching and when they start making a bunch of sequels people realize it. But hey, at least we have Brave to look forward to next year, it's like a breath of fresh air for Pixar fans! But I don't care much for the Monsters sequel -- yet, it will probably be a good movie, I'm sure.

Pixar knows what they are doing. That's why they ended Toy Story 3 SO perfectly. The Toy Story Toons was hilarious and I hope they make more. Pixar never disappoints! Only true fans believe that! They wouldn't give super detailed scoops to their actors so That's why Tom Hanks didn't really know. He said "I think" too! People who believe in rumors freak out. True Pixar fans like me, are happy whatever Pixar chooses to do.

I think Tom was just worrying about his career...

NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!

Nate, was that sarcasm? Its not like he has anything to worry about, he's been A list for as long as I can remember. He stays busy and gets paid really well. If this were Tim Allen you'd have a point.
