On Wednesday, November 16, The Pixar Blog will become Big Screen Animation, a general animation blog featuring news from all the major studios, as well as independent outfits and artists.
As the name suggests, the blog will focus mostly on feature animation, but expect to see shorts and other animation-related content as well. I hope to change things up with a modest redesign and insightful guest posts.
So why the change? There’s a number of reasons. For starters, I feel there’s a need for a fresh animation news and discussion site that’s accessible to a wide, non-industry audience.
Moreover, as animation takes a whole new place in the entertainment industry, there are many non-Pixar projects I’d like to cover. New studios are cropping up. I look forward to sharing the latest on the most interesting developments from across the world of animation.
Pixar will, of course, be at the forefront. It is, without a doubt, the greatest animation studio in the world.
Beginning Nov. 16, visitors to pixarblog.blogspot.com will be automatically redirected to the new address, bigscreenanimation.com. Individual posts from the past four years will still be available and will redirect to their new URLs. Twitter username will change accordingly.
I’ll be away from the blog for the next week starting Sunday, but will be checking (and responding to) comments. Please sound off below.

Called it! Good luck competing with the big boys in the animation blogging biz and don't do a Jerry Beck and complain way more than you praise to the point I'd question what is it you even like about animation.
Looking forward to it. While Pixar is hands down the best studio, there is always room for scoops and info from Dreamworks et al as there is so much good animation around these days.
This is good news, as there have been some wonderful animated feature films from other stuios over the last few years. :D
Will you be setting up studio specific news feeds? If not... please do ;)
This is great news! I'm so glad to hear that you are casting a wider net into the world of animation!
I don't come to this site to read about other studios. I only come to read about Pixar and Pixar news. This is a truly awful idea. I won't be visiting much anymore.
Mike, that sounds great! Can't wait for the 16th.
Hmmm... Yeah, well, just like Anonymous 2 said, I come to this blog to read about Pixar news, but knowing more about animation in general wouldn't hurt anybody. Actually, being an animation student, a site of this kind would be more than useful. Besides, it's not like you're gonna cut down on the amount of Pixar news, but the other way around, so I say GO!
Im sad to see the change, since a pixar blog and a wider industry blog are two fundamentally different things. Pixar fans should have a pixar blog to read, just as dreamworks fans should have one they read etc. A wider industry blog definitely has its place, but i wish it wasnt simply the evolution of this one. While i like the idea of big screen animation, and look forward to what it offers in its own rite, i think that the end of this exclusively pixar oasis is something of a tragedy. Both sites should exist, not a two-for-one.
yeaaah i dunnnno man.. imma be honest with you, i dont come here for the crumpets and orange juice, im here for the sweet taste of PIXAR gossip.. and i dont like the idea of syphoning through all the other bullshit to find it.. hahah BUT ill still be checking it out because you have been a delicious source for so long, i owe it to you! all the best!!
I think it's great! Looking forward to new and interesting content. Keep up the great work!
I applaud the change. In these times, animation is no longer associated with a single studio the way it had been in decades past. And shifting to focus on the medium and the art of animation is great for broadening perspectives to great competitive work being done elsewhere.
For those who are still interested in a Pixar only blog, Upcoming Pixar is still kicking, and their coverage had substantial overlap with the coverage here. This is a good move all-around, I believe.

Will there be a Pixar-only news feed? Also, will you be covering Studio Ghibli? It would be nice to have a source of Ghibli news that isn't as jaded and snarky as The Ghibli Blog.
I'm just gonna echo what Nini said. Sites like Cartoon Brew make me physically ill and I sure hope you won't become anything like them. I want coverage of all the big studios with the same professionalism you did back when this was a Pixar blog.
I admit I'm rather excited about this. I admit that I've always viewed you as a biased person who can't really enjoy any animation except Pixar (with a few exceptions). And you've always had a pretty big hating for DreamWorks (although that changed *slightly* with HtTYD, I remember).
If there's not going to be any bias (except in reviews), then this is going to be awesome. If there is... like you're going to complain when Madagascar 4's release date is officially announced (hey, they're working on it, I believe)...then kindly forget it.
That's quite dramatic, Jared... and quite true as well.
This is perhaps good for you, but as far as I'm concerned the other studios produce trash. Pure and simple. Off somewhere else for my Pixar news then...
I do hope you cover Studio Ghibli as well. Although, Espiox, while I sometimes disagree with the writer, I don't find him to be jaded and snarky. Then again, maybe that's because I am jaded and snarky. :P
Interesting, and a bold move. You've always been an excellent journalist for the animation industry, and although part of me will miss the solely-Pixar talk, I do look forward to your thoughts on the rest of the animation world.
see ya later pixar blog! (ahem.. sorry bigscreenanimation.. =/ ) ..won't be returning.
I'll be glad for the change! I love Pixar above all other studios, but they aren't the only ones producing great animation. I think this is great idea.
At first I was like, "NOOOO!" This was my favorite blog that I always checked daily and it made a little bit of me die inside when I read this. But then when I thought about it I decided that you will still have more Pixar coverage than ever I'm sure and It wouldn't be that bad to hear from other animation studios every once in a while although Pixar will still always be the best animation company known to man. But I also would like to know the same as Espiox, Studio Ghibli always comes in second to Pixar with me and I would love to know if it will be covered on the new site. I just hope that you don't lose a lot of your viewers because of this change.
I'll be removing you from my bookmarks. I don't see the point of this. You all ready do a Disney blog so what's the point of combing them? Cuz that's basically what it will be, right? You HATE Dreamworks so you're only going to use your animation blog to trash them every chance you get.
There are enough other Pixar blogs out there, and pixartalk.com is vastly superior to this one anyway that I think we Pixar fans can live without your blog.
Good luck though.
I agree with Phil. Making studio specific news feeds or categorizing posts well would be a great thing. Reading about other studios would be great but choosing the pixar link to check up on all it's gossip would put the icing on this animation cake.
Um that sounds really great i will deffinetly check it out but i have 1 question will there be some link or button or something to be able to see just news for 1 studie (ex. DUH pixar)? Even if theres not i will deffinetly(is that spelled right?) be a regular follower! And one more question could u plz plz plz... Post a photo of yourself? Plz? Thanks man youdabest
Yeah i totally agree with rain is epicness a link to just pixar news would be great and I (and hopefully many other followers) want to see what you look like!!!!
Will the site URL stay the same or will that change too? (yeah, I know silly question)
Im okay with the change, just please dont abbreviate it as BSAnimation...
A bold move indeed. I suspect like with any change, you will lose some readers, and gain many. I look forward to seeing how it all plays out.
Man, this is where I got my PIXAR news. Now that it's going to ALL animation, it might have less enphisis on PIXAR.
Can't wait to see what you have in store!!! :D
Meh. I won't be back.
As much as I love Pixar, a studio that makes only one movie a year doesn't give you all that much to cover. Looking forward to the change.
not a fan of this idea but will support you all the way
yes.inuffsaid
This is what I was afraid of. We don't need another Cartoon Brew in my opinion. I know there are people who don't like how they do things there, but why does the pixar blog have to even cover the same things in general? I'm not against the idea of you starting up a separate site to do a catch all animation blog, but at least keep the pixar specific option open. Or if you have the ability at least add a filter of some kind that lets us only see the Pixar stuff. or Dreamworks stuff, or Disney, etc. I could live with that.
please change your logo
I came here (and here alone, no other Pixar websites) because I am a Pixar fan. There are plenty of other places to get information on animation in general. I have no desire to continue to come here and weed through the information about Puss in Boots and Madagascar 3 when I want to read about Brave. After 3+ years of coming here almost daily, I am now a Pixar Talk reader.
This is great news, I wholly welcome info about animation which is not just Pixar. There are thousands of great full length and short animation films which are produced by dedicated animators. Looking forward to reading the blog.
Ghibli>Pixar FACT. Pixar make a CGI product, Ghibli make Art. The content change is a good idea, it's not like itl stunt Pixar posts, plus itl be good to widen peoples scope beyond Pixar. Ps I agree with the Ghibli Blog comments, but hell that's just Internet blogging for you.
Mike, will you be covering mo-cap as well? I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on different types of animation/variations in the art form, so will you be having reviews of Puss in Boots, Happy Feet 2, Arthur Christmas, and The Adventures of Tin-Tin?
Please let me know!!! :)
I Am Really Exited For The Blog. We Need More Animation News Blogs/Websites
I completely agree with Ralph Sloane, if you would like to see on another animated film would see anywhere else, but I come here because I want to know about Brave and other Pixar films, or Dreamworks or Sony or any! PIXAR only!
People love to complain about free things. They may visit and read the blog, but you live it and you shouldn't forget to please yourself while trying to please others. Having handled a similar site expansion myself, the negative comments here read remarkably like the ones I got back then. It's sort of infuriating to have people complain about getting more than they were and to claim that they can't be bothered to simply skip over things they don't care about. If those readers actually leave (and I doubt many of them live up to their anonymous words), you don't need them, as they clearly do not respect or appreciate what you do. I do and I wish you the best.
Good luck on the new site Mikey!
I've been a loyal reader for almost three years, and I ain't stoppin' now.
Why Nov. 16th?
Thanks for all of your comments. I love seeing readers this involved! And I appreciate all the support.
In response to a few questions:
-I picked Nov. 16 as it's one day after the 4th anniversary of The Pixar Blog. Thought I'd wrap up a full four years.
-Yes, I will be covering mo-cap. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
-Don't expect much Studio Ghibli news.
Mike, why should we not expect more Ghibli news, if you don't mind me asking. Is it because there isn't that much to report, or is it for a different reason? (ie. you don't like Studio Ghibli?) I personally don't have a problem with the Ghibli blog. But I'm curious.
like the name btw
