Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich began work today on his next oeuvre at Pixar.
"Today is day one on my next project. Every day I'll post a new photo chronicling the journey," Unkrich tweeted one hour ago.
He then posted a link to leeunkrich.tumblr.com.
It's unusual to see a director talking about a film so early in it's development, even though nothing in the way of theme or title is likely to be revealed anytime soon.
Clearly, Lee wants to stay connected to his fan base of over 100,000 Twitter followers. (If you're not already, follow him @leeunkrich.)
As for the movie, could it be Toy Story 4? In some respects, it would make a lot of sense for Unkrich to be the one to direct the heavily rumored third sequel.
-----
Update: The Tumblr account and Unkrich's tweets about the endevour have disappeared. I've reached out to Pixar for comment but have yet to hear back.

well IMDB lists toy story 4 as 2015. so lee probably pitched his idea for toy story 4.
It would make sense if he directed TS4. Give it to the guy who guided the fantastic third outing.
Mike, you sound so hell-bent on a Toy Story 4. You're entitle to your opinions/wishful thinking and all that, but still, it's pretty disturbing.
I kinda hope it's not Toy Story 4 but a whole new film franchise. They should just leave Toy Story alone. It ended so great with Toy Story 3. But if it is Toy Story 4 then I will welcome it with open arms
Oh please oh please oh please let it NOT be Toy Story 4. I hope that was just a stupid rumour. Let it die! If it's not Toy Story 4, however, I'm really looking forward to what develops. :)
The code fan inside me wonders if there is any significance to the particular keyboard letters that he chose for that first photo. Will we look back in a couple of years and see a little tease there?
could it follow Andy during his college days? because college toys ain't kid-friendly, if you know what I mean ;)
This is a Washington Post Interview of Michael Arndt
I was hired in 2005 by Pixar. And the film could have been a disaster," says Arndt
Arndt was teamed with Lee Unkrich to work on one of Unkrich's original ideas. Months later, though, Pixar tapped Unkrich -- who'd worked on the first two "Toy Story" films -- to direct the third film in the groundbreaking CGI franchise.
"Lee and I had already built a good relationship working together," says Arndt, who praises Unkrich's "ruthless focus" on craft.
This clearly shows that Unkrich had an original idea and i believe he has returned to it. I have such confidence because once these directors get an idea in their head they cant let go of it (best example is Andrew Stanton with WALL-E which was conceived in 1994 and released in 2008). Considering he's already given this idea a lot of thought, back in 2005 ish and possibly during the 1.5 yrs since the completion of TS3, and that he'll have even more time on this film than the last (assuming its not released late 2014) i think it may turn out even better than TS3, that is if Unkrich can find a Screen Writer with a comparable level of genius since Michael Arndt is currently busy with Untitled Pixar Film that takes you inside the Mind. I expect to see this film between in 2015. Furthermore if Pixar continues with the announcement of their films and the vague ideas of these films as early as they have been then I expect to see an announcement about this film between the release of Brave and Monsters University.
im the anonymous who posted the comment quoting the washington post article. i meant to say that i would expect the film in 2016 or late 2015 at the earliest. my bad.
"Lee Unkrich *began*" or "Lee Unkrich *has begun*. Never Lee Unkrich begun.
Thanks for that.
I don't think they would have Lee direct 2 toy stories back to back like that. Lee has been working with these same characters for 4 years in a row now, I'm sure he'd like some breathing room to branch out a bit more. His success with TS3 should give him some pull as far as getting the Lasseter stamp of approval. This photo a day thing is probably so that by the end of the process he'll have a clear record of the whole thing from start to finish. Being his first original project at the studio probably feels more personal to him so it would make sense.
Seems the account is now deactivated :(
Curses! Unkrich with your canceling your twittering ways!
Alright, to be fair, this was probably Disney's doing, not Lee Unkrich himself.
Not only the tumblr account but his Facebook fan page disappeared at the same time. Very strange.
