Disney, Pixar classics returning to theatres in 3-D

"Fish are friends, not food."
The Walt Disney Studios has just announced that Pixar's Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. will be returning to theatres in digital 3-D on September 14, 2012 and January 18, 2013, respectively.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid will open January 13, 2012 and September 13, 2013.

Missing from today's announcement is Ratatouille, which we've known for some time has already been converted into 3-D, under the watchful eye of director Brad Bird.

Disney's move to re-release these classics follows the unprecedented success of The Lion King 3D, which crosses the $80 million mark at the box office today.

The Lion King's 3-D treatment fell short of my overall expectations, but that was due to its 2-D origins. As I noted at The Disney Blog: "Disney’s resources would probably have been better spent on converting one of Pixar’s gems, like WALL-E or Finding Nemo."

That said, I can't wait to see 'Beast' on the big screen in a couple of months and Pixar's masterpieces further out. "Anything that gets classic Disney films back on the big screen is a good thing."

What are your thoughts on today's announcement?

It'll be nice to see Nemo in 3D! It's one of my favourite Pixar films!

I agree... and hopefully, having the classics brought back to the big screen will remind everyone why 2D is still an amazing medium to tell great stories with!

We don't have to choose between 2D and 3D..... we CAN and SHOULD have both!

As I first read the title I thought 'Wall-e' the scenes in space would probably work well. Maybe next time?... The Incredibles would probably be awesome as well!

Hope this would lead to a Finding Nemo Blu-ray release soon. The movie so deserves it!

I'm indifferent to the idea. Yeah, I'm sure it will look great in 3D, (as the Toy Story movies did), but I've seen both of those movies a million times, so I probably won't go to theatres to see it.

That said, I'd rather see Finding Nemo or Monster's Inc. 3D than one of the hand-drawn Disney films.

When I went to the screening of Cars 2, they played a trailer for Lion King 3D, which consisted of the opening Circle of Life sequence. Hand drawn animation in 3D is about as awful as the storyline for Cars 2.

Wall-e in 3D? Wow, this it great! Even if they don't put Wall-e back in theaters, any one of Pixar's movies (in my opinion) would be totally awesome in 3D. And Disney Classics too! Yay!

Putting Disney and Pixar classics back on the big screen in 3D is amazing! It's a great way to introduce these films to younger children, where these known classics may be considered new to them! Which is what got me to become an aspiring animator when The Little Mermaid came out for the first time in theatres. Plus it will be like a new experience seeing them in 3D for the grown-ups! Promise!

I really don't like this.
I mean, sure it would probably be sweet in 3d. I watch Nemo a lot on dvd and I love it. Still laugh of the same jokes and I would too if it was in the theatres again.

But I just feel it is a sad way of using resources, by keep beating on their old success instead of spending the energy on new stuff (I know they do still, but you know what I mean).
I love both Nemo, Wall-E and Monsters, but re-releasing them in 3-D just does them no good at all! They are perfect as they are :)

Honestly I feel that Disney should focus on something new instead of re-releasing things that already served their time in theaters.

Not everything works in 3D, hand drawn movies should not be in 3D because it somewhat defeats the purpose of being 2D animation.

When I was a kid I remember the Jungle Book being re-released in theaters in the early 90's because it was never released on vhs yet during that time. which it worked because the Jungle book was released during the 60's in theaters.

They should wait for a few decades before they re-release things in theaters and not everyone has a copy of the film on DVD.

Love it. Im excited for all of them.
I didn't care for the lion king, but that was more about the things they altered in the process like the warmer color pallet, or (accidentally, presumably) removing cloud mufasa from one shot. I'm sure beast will be the same crappy color changes from the diamond edition as well. bah!

I love 3D, even with hand drawn animation, I just want them to keep it faithful as far as everything else goes which Disney just isn't doing.

Pixar's movies of course lend themselves better to the effect, though Nemo and even the unannounced Ratatouille are probably the last ones I want to see of the pixar catelog converted. I think the incredible will be the most impressive.

I saw B&tB in 3D at the El Capitan and it actually works very well! Some shots are jarring (Maurice in the dungeon with his arm poking out through the bars looks so awkward), but effect is quite good. I did not like Lion King because the 3D effect was minimal and the glasses made the picture so dark I couldn't see most of the time.
