Cars 2 faces crowded Oscar field

Eighteen features have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 84th Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just announced.

Assuming at least sixteen of these make their qualifying theatrical runs, the category will have five nominees this year—something that's happened only twice before since the award was established in 2001.

Cars 2 will consequently face a tough challenge in taking home the prize. (The first real challenge for a Pixar film since the first Cars.) In fact, there's even the risk that it could lose out on a nomination if the naysayers have their way.

Nominations will be announced on January 24, 2012, at 5:30 AM PT. The awards will be presented on February 26.

Crtiically it's a weak nom so it mightn't be one not to expect a win for this year especially not with Kung Fu Panda 2 which should have a reasonably easy time winning this category.

Next year with Brave might give them their win if they can do better than DreamWorks' Guardians.

To be blunt, I believe there is no way in hell that Cars 2 will even get a nomination this year. Marking the first time that a Pixar film doesn't get nominated for the category.

Rango and Winnie-the-Pooh, in my opinion, are far more deserving. (I haven't seen Puss-in-Boots yet however, it may also deserve a nomination)

Pssh sorry, Pixar. Not this year. Not with a film like Cars 2.

Not to be a downer but everyone knows Pixar wins films not the director. A 14 year old boy could direct a Pixar film with basic knowledge of film if he follows the "Pixar formula". just my opinion

Cars 2 doesn't stand a chance against Kung Fu Panda 2!

Naysayers? When the MAJORITY of people hate it, that makes YOU the naysayer.
Face it Pixar fanboys, Cars 2 isn't anywhere near as good as the other animated films released this year. Rango, Winnie the Pooh, A Monster in Paris, Rio, Puss in Boots; With films like these out, it'd be an insult if Cars 2 gets nominated.

I love how everyone suddenly has a bitter attitude towards Pixar for making one critical failure. They've made 10 FANTASTIC films, and now we're insulting them for messing up once?! That's just ridiculous. Come on, give pixar credit where it is do. They invented this style of film making for goodness sake!

BTW, Anonymous 2: Everyone does not know that, because it's not true.

Rango. That's all I have to say.

Personally, I think the only Oscar Cars 2 deserves hands down is sound editing. Plain and simple.

If I were to nominate five films for animated film this year, they would be:

Rango
Chico & Rita
Winnie the Pooh
A Cat in Paris
The Adventures of Tintin

with Tintin taking the trophy.

However, that said, it'd be fun to see round 2 of Happy Feet vs. Cars

This year was terrible for animation. Even so, there's no way Cars 2 will even get a nominated. No way in Hell.

Anonymous 2, you're just being arrogant. And you're giving a bad name to us "naysayers" as Mike has dubbed us.

We are not villainous little demons who sit in a dark corner and plot world domination, human starvation, disease, and the destruction of Cars 2's popularity. Most of us are just disappointed fans.

@Anonymous: You don't know what you're talking about. The single most important part of the "Pixar formula" is hiring really, really smart people.

My bet would be on Rango to win over all. I'd say the viable contenders to be nominated are:

"The Adventures of Tintin"
"Arthur Christmas"
"Cars 2"
"Happy Feet Two"
"Kung Fu Panda 2"
"Puss in Boots"
"Rango"
"Rio"
"Winnie the Pooh"

I don't think any of the foreign films have gotten enough praise to overcome their foreignness and get a nomination in such a tight field. That leaves nine. I think Cars 2 will manage to edge its way in there, if only by virtue of the Pixar name.

@Nini, Kung Fu Panda 2 has slightly better odds of winning than Cars 2, but it still has only slightly better than zero chance of winning. The Adventures of Tin Tin and Rango are pretty much the only two animated movies that have a shot this year. More likely than not it will be Tin Tin.

Cars 2 will not get a nomination. I'd put money on it.

Tin Tin
Rango
Rio
Alois Nebel
King Fu Panda 2
Happy Feet 2
Winnie the Pooh
A Cat in Paris
Puss in Boots

ALL have a better shot at getting the five nominations than Cars 2.

Cars 2 is not going to win Mike.

And Pixar and John Lasseter can take blame for that. Cars 2 was not a bad movie, but it wasn't a movie that met expectations that we usually see from a Pixar film. It was the first Pixar film I had to tell others that it is not a must see film, and that hurt me saying so. Usually every Pixar film is a must see in theaters. Not Cars 2.

It will get nominated at both the Annies and the Oscars. Even the Golden Globes. But the only thing I see them winning is the Golden Globes (like they did with Cars). After that, someone else is winning the Annies and the Oscars. Nickelodeon's Rango was a better film in storytelling, and going beyond expectation! It was even better than DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots!

Next year, Pixar will definitely have a better shot at winning with Brave. But this year, Pixar did the Oscars, the Annies, and their competitors a favor by not being the best they could with their film. Again, not a bad movie, but not great either. No acceptance speech from John at the Oscars Mike. Sorry.

Cars 2 probably doesn't deserve the win, but it deserves the nomination. Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2 were the only ones that were any better than Cars 2. If Cars 2 doesn't win something for its spectacular animation, however, that will be stupid.

And Winnie the Pooh? Pffft... don't even get me started.

Anonymous said...

Darrell, first you say Cars 2 is a justifiably good movie, NOW you say that Winnie-the-Pooh is a bad film?! Pooh is infinitely better than Cars 2 because Pooh sticks to it's strengths. (a cute, nostalgic, unambitious movie with fabulous hand-drawn animation)
Cars 2 thinks the audience is so stupid, that they would find Larry the Cable Guy funny.

Chris Etrata said...

Cars 2 was misunderstood by a lot of people. It won't get the nomination but in my opinion, it is far better than what a lot of critics are saying. I am not saying that it is a masterpiece but it deserves at least a nomination. Everyone is only saying it's bad just because of expectations.

Darrell said...

Anonymous #8: Cars 2 is just the sort of film that I find enjoyable. It's far from perfect, but it's riveting and enjoyable at least. Can't handle that? Get outta here!

As for Winnie the Pooh? Sorry, I'm not into "cuteness." Nostalgia? Sorry, I don't feel any nostalgia for Pooh at all. And I don't care if that one was well hand-drawn or not. To me, it's just an animated movie for youngsters and people who are feeling the need for nostalgia.

Whatever. You feel the nostalgia. Great. I don't. And I don't care.

"Cars 2 thinks the audience is so stupid, they would find Larry the Cable Guy funny."

I guess I'm really stupid then. NOT! Because I LOL'ed a lot at Mater in this one. It wasn't the best idea to bring him into the limelight and sideline McQueen the way they did, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy it for what it is.

Robbie, we're all bound to make mistakes in life. But considering the amount of talent and film making knowledge inside the Pixar studio, it is truly amazing that Cars 2 made it past the story stages. Everyone there should have known better. That's why fans are upset.
I didn't like the first Cars very much, but the mistake was much more forgivable. The studio tried something, and it didn't work. (not to mention Joe Ranft died midway through the production, which I think may have something to do with the story not getting much in the way of re-writes)

But to make a sequel to their weakest film? To me it seems like John Lasseter did not want to learn from history.

Anonymous said...

to be honest it would be an insult, to all those other great films (winnie the pooh, rango, tin-tin maybe) if cars 2 gets nominated in the animated category.
the movie isn't oscar material, if you know what I mean. its no toy story 3......

if anything it does deserve respect though. people act like the film was JUST made and pixar didnt put any effort in to it, only because there was no emotion as we're used of seeing in these films. But thats just not true. The movie was made with such care just like any other Pixar film. It really hurts to see comments so nesty toward the film.

anyways, cars 2 should be nominated for sound editing, and best original musical score.

at least the short film has a chance...

@Anonymos #8: Now that's just hurtful. I think that Larry the Cable Guy is funny and I'm most certainly NOT stupid.

Anonymous said...

Anon #8 here. My apologies about the Larry the Cable Guy comment. Believe me, I did not Mater funny, but it actually wasn't my intention to be rude.

The internet has a way of bringing out the rudeness in people, and through the mask of an anonymous comment, sometimes a good-natured tone can be lost in translation.

I'm very opinionated, but I'm not trying to be a jerk. Sorry guys.

I bet collectible toy cars sell better than old men in flying houses. Not to be cynical but that may be the reason for a sequel of cars to exist.

Anonymous said...

Simon, you're absolutely right about the existence of Cars 2. All of us who hate the movie already know that. We are just concerned that Pixar will continue to sacrifice the quality of their movies for the sake of marketability.

Doug Bowker said...

A weak year all around for animation, but Cars 2 doesn't stand out as something deserving to get a nomination regardless. Rango was good, as was Rio (but neither were mind-blowing). Tin-Tin looks interesting too. Didn't see Winnie the Pooh but the reviews were very strong for it.

One clunker in a string on amazing movies from Pixar was disappointing, but I am confident it will be a one time thing.

Winnie the Pooh deserves to win the award.

Didnt read the comments so sorry if this is redundnat: Cars 2 is not Oscar material. It's lunchbox material.

Brent, I love the comparison of Cars 2 to a lunchbox. True words, amen brother.

I'm sure pixar will jump right back from the abysmal failure that was cars 2, but for me, them failing like that was more than just a stumble. It was proof that pixar is no longer perfect, and to me, thats worse than any bad movie will ever be. Learn from your mistakes, Pixar. I don't know about the money, but I think you probably shouldn't have let it out after seeing how bad it was, especially if you care about legacy.
