Cars 2 tops home video sales charts

Cars 2 was the best selling Blu-ray/DVD in its first week on sale, beating its nearest competition by a margin of more than 5 to 1, reports Home Media Magazine.

This may be the best proof of how real audiences feel about the film.

"[Cars 2] generated nearly half its sales from Blu-ray Disc—a significantly high percentage for an animated family film. The film’s strong showing on Blu-ray is due, in part, to its availability in Blu-ray 3D, which accounted for 17% of total disc sales."

Actually, restricting the availability of many bonus features to the 5-disc combo pack (which includes the film on Blu-ray 3D) was likely the biggest reason for higher 3-D sales.

It's not how real audiences feel about the film. It's parents desperate for family friendly entertainment. I was a kid once, you know. And some parents scourge the video rental stores for anything and everything family friendly. Family films always make a ton of money if their marketed well, and with Cars 2, it's an easy sell.

But, I would be interested in comparing it with the DVD sales of other Pixar films. Since Cars 2 fared comparatively poor to other Pixar films at the box-office. (it scored worse than Ratatouille, WALL-E, and Up, which were apparently hard sells to the executives at Disney)

I'm empathetic with parents getting this film for their kids. However, the movie is still crap, in my opinion.

I accidentally deleted half a dozen comments. My apologies.

Rewriting my comment, since it was supposedly deleted by accident:

Anonymous, Cars 2 actually did better than WALL-E worldwide (551 M compared to 534 M), even if it didn't do as well as the three you mentioned in the USA.

Let's hope that parents aren't buying this film just because they're desperate for family friendly entertainment.

Don't worry Mike, I bet most of the comments you deleted were to bash Cars 2. We've pretty sick of reading those already.

I bought this movie on BD... Not for me but for my 4-year-old who has no problem with poor dialogue, and a swiss cheese plot.

Cars 2 is an unholy abomination, an insult to all of the talented artists and animators at Pixar Animation Studios, who were forced to work on a film that they disliked to keep their job. I believe most of the Pixar staff were honestly unhappy with Cars 2. If you could get a hold of them confidentially for their private opinions. They would not want to be fired.

I think it's fascinating that even the Cars 2 defenders have to admit that it's not as good as the other Pixar movies. (even the first one, which wasn't nearly on par with other Pixar productions, is a masterpiece compared to it's sequel)

It is not unreasonable to expect Pixar to put out great movie after great movie. I too, believe that these guys are mortals. The thing is, I believe it's not just the exceptional talent that makes Pixar great. It's the studio management, and how the story process is director driven. All of the executive producers at Pixar are film-makers. And that makes a big difference. So interesting that Cars 2 started production being directed by a film-producer. Not a director, film-editor, or animator. Brad Lewis's previous work in film was all business.

Yes, John Lasetter took over the director's chair eventually. But he is so in love with his Cars universe, that I think it is difficult for him to listen to any reasonable outside criticism. Especially since he is the most powerful man in the studio. Pixar had, and probably still has to some extent, a democratic storytelling process, where everybody contributes ideas. But when you know that saying something bad about Mr. Lasseter's idea could cost you your job, you'll shut up.

And I'm uncomfortable when power is concentrated to such high extremes, and egos get into place instead of a desire to tell a good story.

I just knew when Mike said, REAL AUDIENCES, that people would notice it.
@Anonymos #2: I think that too.

Darrell, Anonymous 1 here. Thanks for clearing up the info about the box office statistics. Because I certainly know here in Canada, WALL-E had a much longer theatrical run than Cars 2. (not to mention everyone I talked to liked WALL-E, dislike Cars 2)

By the way, Matt, thank you very much for proving my point. Poor dialogue and swiss cheese plot indeed. :)

"This may be the best proof of how real audiences feel about the film." i.e. I'm not part of the "real" audience?

I highly recommend using an unbiased language when writing your posts, Mike.

I completely agree with 1st Anonymous, this sales are from parents who buy entertainment for their kids. Parents like Matt, who think Cars 2 isn't anything like other Pixar features (I'm comparing Cars 2 to previous Pixar releases... Shoot me!) but will still keep them quiet for 90 minutes, just like any other family movie would, be it Toy Story, Shrek, Ice Age, Up, Shark Tale, Rio, Rango, etc.

The huge difference here is parents won't enjoy it nearly as much as they might have enjoyed Ratatouille or any other Pixar movie. They'll enjoy it the same way they've enjoyed Dreamworks' crappy flicks: with a nice, peaceful nap.

How dare thou, Anonymous #3! It's one thing to say that Cars 2 has a "swiss cheese plot" and "poor dialogue," like another commenter said earlier. It's another thing entirely to call it an unholy abomination that all the Pixar employees are ashamed of!

Darrell, if you can not handle a little hyperbole on a movie blog, I suggest you leave the internet. My intentions were not violent or bitter dear sir.

Sincerely,

You know, I really really REALLY hate all of this Cars 2 debate. Actually, I'm not event going to call it debate, it's simple, blatant arguing. It's never going to shut up, some people are opinionated, I get that, we get that. However, we're spamming the comments threads with OPINIONS, and trying to infect other people with- Dear god I'm a hypocrite.

I respect those who feel differently, but I actually liked Cars 2... I'm just surprised at the very polarized response it actually got...

I wanted to like Cars 2. I really wanted to. It's a Pixar film, after all, and no one *wants* to admit Pixar made their first story-flop.

But the simple truth is it's a direct-to-DVD plot, the same as Aladdin 2, The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2, Bambi 2, Fox and the Hound 2, Brother Bear 2, The Little Mermaid 2, 101 Dalmatians 2, etc. They were never made to tell an interesting story just as good as their predecessors. They were made to rake in the money from parents who know practically anything Disney will please their kids.

Cars 2 wasn't Toy Story 2.

I am one of the few people who actually loved the original Cars film. The storyline, the music, the character developments were fantastic. And Cars 2 feels like watching a puppet show dumbed-down for 4-year-olds. The theme is friendship, well that's great--but that theme is played out like a "we can all be friends and give out hugs" preschool song that no one above preschool age wants to be caught singing.

Like I said, I didn't want to see Pixar fail, I did want to like Cars 2, but denying that Cars 2 is Pixar's worst film would make me the type of fanboy that praises bronzed crap.

Darrell said...

My apologies Anonymous 3--didn't realize you were using hyperbole.

I suppose all that leaves is the normal amount of arguing towards all those who dislike Cars 2. But whatever--I'll let that slide to the next person who puts up some incredibly disparaging comment about the movie.

Being the Defender Of Cars 2 can have its down times, you know.

"Real audiences?..." As in those who didn't like the movie don't matter? Wow. That's low, dude.

Darrell, between you and Chris Etrata, the Cars 2 thought police will be in full operation for years to come. Congratulations. :)

All this proves is that a lot of parents need something to distract their kids while they pay their bills.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 10, I couldn't agree more.

Darrell, Cars 2 may have made slightly more money than WALL•E in its final total worldwide but that fails to take inflation into account. When doing that, Cars 2 is far and away the least successful Pixar movie ever, well behind even A Bug's Life.

Loved Cars 2, like everything Pixar. It's just different. Just watch it again, it'll grow on you. It's actually a logical expansion of the universe of Cars and the Cars Toons. Some people just don't like Mater. I think he's funny right there... Cars 3? Bring it on!

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 12, I disliked the original Cars more upon my second viewing. (the only Pixar film I was reluctant to see a second time), so I don't know what literary depth awaits me when seeing Cars 2 again. I think I won't.

I ordered the regular DVD on Amazon because I don't have a Blu-ray player. :( I miss the days when Pixar's DVDs were packed full of awesome material. That stopped after The Incredibles, though.
