Will Brad Bird Ever Return to Animation?

Bird directing Tom Cruise on location in Dubai
That's the question I asked myself while riding the cinematic roller coaster that is Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol, which opened Friday on IMAX screens.

After helming The Incredibles and Ratatouille for Pixar, Brad Bird has brought his filmmaking skill to live action in a big way—one of the most successful animation-to-live action transitions for a director in film history.

The action in M:I–GP is spectacularly well executed, on the same plane as that of the Bourne trilogy. A few more like this and Bird could become Hollywood's go-to director for adrenaline.

It's a sure bet that Paramount will be pushing for a sequel as soon as the box office figures from the wide release come in next week. Should he 'choose to accept it', Bird won't be coming back full-time to Pixar anytime soon. That means no Incredibles 2.

Still it's easy to see that Bird still retains a strong connection with his first love. Ghost Protocol is sprinkled with in-jokes (A113 becomes "Alpha 113") and talent (music by Michael Giacchino and voiceover by Teddy Newton) familiar to Pixar buffs.

And then, of course, there's this.

I think if he does (which he probably will). I'd say create your own animation studio.) If he starts making these big budget films over and over again he can create his own studio he runs. thats the BOSS way to do things. Instead of adding to Pixar's legacy go and create your own. But not everyone has the time to run a full studio

This is the question I've been asking myself lately. The question for me goes not only to Brad Bird, but to Andrew Stanton as well, since he's doing 'John Carter'. I surely hope either of them don't completely abandon animation, and stick with Pixar.

So.. this is you making a telling joke with his award acceptance speech? I don't know which way to turn, tell me so I may live Mike, why won't you let me LIVE?!!

So I'm guessing 1906 is gonna happen for sure.

@Jay: Stanton is certainly returning to animation, as he is listed as directing Monsters U.

Incredibles 2 could be helmed by Mark Andrews once he finishes Brave; his style of film making is very close to Bird's.

Where on earth did you hear that, Kevin? Dan Scanlon is directing Monsters University.

I know Brad Bird is working on 1906 after Mission Impossible 4, so he won't be back in animation for a while yet. However, he seems very passionate about animation, so I don't see him giving it up forever.

Teddy Newton does a voice in M:I 3? Is he the voice on the tape, or what...?

Besides Alpha-113, if one looks carefully one can see "A-113" on a ring, about 20-30 minutes into the film...

I think Pixar should make shorts on their other films like Finding Nemo and WALL-E. We don't need a sequel but they can make a short attached to their future films of the character's continued adventures.

@Mike: Bleh, my mistake. I saw Monster's U on his IMDB page and just assumed he was directing (it's actually just a credit for characters).

I think it's highly likely that if Paramount decides to have a follow up to Ghost Protocol, Brad Bird won't be directing it since Tom Cruise has stated in the past how he likes that each installment is directed by a different director bringing their own sense of style to the franchise. Having Brad Bird direct the follow up would end this trend and since Tom Cruise is one of the producers he probably has a quite a bit of say into what happens.

That being said, I think it's highly likely that Brad Bird will now try to get one of his own projects off the ground such as 1906.

Sooo, we're to assume he shall should 1904 ever make a move? If the question is serious (which I'm now considering after days of borderline confusion and questioned sanity is probably not the case) it's a sideline, there will be a Incredibles sequel because though no cash cow it does hold a special place in many people's hearts and there's a lot of latitude for stories within that universe.

Pixar has not heard the last of either Brad or Andrew.
