Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced this morning by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, California. The nominees for Best Animated Feature Film are:
- A Cat in Paris
- Chico & Rita
- Kung Fu Panda 2
- Puss in Boots
- Rango
- Dimanche (Sunday)
- The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore
- La Luna
- A Morning Stroll
- Wild Life
The Academy's choices for Animated Feature this year are enormously wrong. I wouldn't have been surprised to see Cars 2 fail to make the cut (though it deserved the recognition), but to see Tintin ignored as well comes as a shock.
Something tells me that the members of the Animation Branch were none too pleased with the film's motion/performance capture technique. Poor Weta.
I would say that Rango has the best chance of winning now, but at this point nothing would shock me. In the animated short slot, nominees are less of a surprise. I've seen all but one of the films online—none should beat Pixar's La Luna.
The 84th Academy Awards presentation takes place on Sunday, February 26 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. It will be televised live on ABC in the United States beginning at 7 PM ET/4 PM PT. Check local listings for international broadcast schedules.

hope Chico & Rita wins. Well, I know it won't, but still hope.
Glad to see Cars 2 out. First time for Pixar. Hope this works as a wake up call.
I'd say Rango has this in the bag, and, of the nominated films, it is the best one.
I'm disappointed, but not totally surprised, that the best movie of the 2011, Winnie the Pooh, didn't get nominated.
Rules say motion capture is no eligible for best animated feature award.

I'm all for saying if you're displeased with a film, but regardless of how bad you may have thought Cars 2 was, ask yourself...was it worse than Puss In Boots or Kung Fu Panda 2? Come On. I don't agree that this should send a message to Pixar - Cars 2 may have fell a little flat in areas, but from a technical standpoint it was still leaps and bounds above some of the competition in the area of shading, lighting and direction. I totally disagree that we should pile on Pixar solely because they didn't make us cry in this film. It's a sad thing when an expectation gets set on a company that they have to produce a certain kind of film..."or else". I wouldn't doubt that Cars 2 would have been nominated if it had a different studio name attached to it and I think that should hold more weight than trying to send a message to the studio to "step it up". Disappointed.
The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore was my favorite of the animated short films...however, the Academy has been known to honor unique artistic styles, of which Divanche has the best chance, I guess
I predict Rango and La Luna will win.
That's odd. Tintin wins the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, and then isn't even nominated for the Oscar?
The !@*#?!?
inb4 disney drops support for the oscars too
Surprised that Puss in Boots got in, and Winnie-the-Pooh didn't. But yeah, I'll be rooting for Rango. Anonymous #2, Pixar wasn't snubbed from the Oscars, La Luna got a nomination for best animated short. :)
I agree with you Mike,
Cars 2 was good, but not really Oscar good (sorry Pixar, big fan)....
but to not see Tintin in the running is almost disrespectful.... I don't care if you don't like motion capture, or it creeps you out to watch humans who aren't real.... it was a great story, told really well, and it DESERVES to at least be in the running.
hands down.
"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn"
I loved Rango. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ILM.
I'm all for saying if you're displeased with a film, but regardless of how bad you may have thought Cars 2 was, ask yourself...was it worse than Puss In Boots or Kung Fu Panda 2?
^ YES it was. Puss In boots was the best animated feature of 2011.
Anonymous #3: There's some confusion about that.
The rules state that "motion capture by itself is not an animation technique", but Tintin did use some frame-by-frame animation and was on the list of films submitted for consideration in the category.
Regardless, Tintin was snubbed and A.M.P.A.S. should change their rules. They don't reflect current realities.
Cars 2, had everyone been more open minded, would have been in the running.
Tintin: The snub surprised me as well.
I'm pulling for either Rango or Kung Fu Panda 2. Too bad Cars 2 didn't get nominated; it probably wouldn't have won anyway but still...
WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO CARS 2!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
"Wrong" is a harsh word and I agree with the academy selection - while the mocap process does require a solid background in animation, it is not the same as the art and craft of animation - its special effects. Take it from someone who works in both industries. Rango for the win - but Ive got my fingers crossed for KFP2
Happy Cars 2 didn't get a nom! Awful movie.
Happy Tintin didin't get one. Also awful and on top of it ugly.
Kung Fu Panda 2 was amazing and I hope it wins. You know JK is just blissful right now. And you know what? He should be.
@Chris Etrata
EXACTLY what I was thinking!!
Yeah, "KUNG FU PANDA 2" deserves the nom, but not "PUSS IN BOOTS" (a film that just screams "Shrek" cash grab and was only solid for the first 1/4). "CARS 2" deserved the nom over that, at least.
ARTHUR CHRISTMAS and Winnie the Pooh were ignored as always. Hello? Actually, I am not surprised by the absence of Tintin. I KNEW one of two animated films with unique animation style will be nominated instead. That's how Academy was like for years for both Animated Feature Films and Short Animated films.
This dissing of motion capture has got to stop. Tintin was animated. Period. Yes, it utilized motion capture techniques, but it is an animated film, whichever way you look at it. Anyway, at least they nominated Morris Lessmore. My favorite animated short, ever. Though I'm really looking forward to seeing La Luna. But that will be after the awards--so Jimmy Crack Corn, people!
:/ I thought Arthur Christmas would make it. Let's hope Aardman gets better luck next year with Pirates.
As for Tintin, even though it was quite poor in character development IMO, I thought it would get the nomination. Perhaps in the end AMPAS determined that being an animation hybrid counts it out. Who knows.
And regarding Cars 2... I don't blame the Academy. I hope La Luna takes the prize home, though.
I thought Winnie the Pooh was terrible. My 3 and 5 year old love the older cartoons and original feature, and they had no interest either. We stopped it twice and tried resuming it later, but they couldn't get into it. We were all looking forward to watching it, and it was a huge disappointment. The scenes were a boring collection of half-rehashed set pieces from older productions, and my son knew the backsoon "twist" twenty minutes into the movie even though he was half watching.
I was hoping for something original, and loved the idea of a hand-drawn feature.
I personally liked Cars 2, and it's a shame it didn't get nominated. But at least La Luna got a nod. It's also quite a shock The Adventures of Tintin didn't get a nod either for Best Animated Feature, but at least it got a nod for John Williams' amazing score.
I'm also sad Winnie the Pooh got snubbed, it was a great film that deserves more recognition. I am happy Puss in Boots got a nod though, it was a surprisingly good film.
No need to put this comment up, but in your sentence: "The Academy's choices for Animated Feature this year are enormously wrong this year."
...you only need to say this year once. ;)
Just thought I'd point it out.
I am vindicated. Just here to gloat because Mike was so positive Cars 2 would make the cut back when it came out and I commented many times that it would not. And look at that, I was right and he was wrong.
Cars 2 was truly terrible and even though the Academy has no problem nominating crap (Norbit anyone?) they drew the line with that god-awful turd. And I knew they would not reward Pixar for making such garbage.
hahahahahahahaha
@ anaymous 1/24 6: 10
I actually though Kung Fu panda 2 was only okay while Puss in boots is unique.
Not being a Pixar fanboy here, but I think Cars 2 should have been nominated for Best Original Score and/or Best Original Song. Too few nominees for Song to not have one of Cars 2 songs nominated. As for Score, Mikey G's score was great and it really made the movie. Also Cars 2 should have at least been nominated for Best Animated Feature over Puss in Boots. Puss was more of a blatant cash grab than Cars 2 was.
Pixar please... STOP with sequels!!!! We want to a new film! Something new!

^wtf is this? found this on the jobs listing on Pixar website.why theme park. and why japanese?
I agree with Leonardo. Pixar's gotten too comfortable in their own skin. Way too many sequels! This year, we're getting Brave. I'm looking forward to that. But I'm afraid that mostly we have sequels to look forward to in the future. God forbid there should be a Cars 3, but there probably will be.
Actually Brave doesn't look all that great. That dinosaur movie looks brilliant though! Now what I really want to see is The Incredibles 2... maybe after Brad Bird finally finishes that blasted 1906 (not that it doesn't look good, I'm just frustrated that it's delaying I2), he can finally "Save The Day" again.
I really really REALLY can't believe that Cars 2 was out!!
I mean, yeah it was worse than the prequel but, hey, Cars 2? It's Cars 2, man! I love Pixar and Cars! It must be nominated even it will be lose, beaten by Puss in Boots or Rango!
and, please answer my questions:
1) where's Rio ??? I loovvvvvvve this great movie and hope it will win or at least, got nominated!
2) why DreamWorks has 2 movies at the same nomination? Puss in Boots AND Kung Fu Panda 2?
really, it shocked me a lot when I read the news about Academy Awards nominations, especially Best Animated Feature nomination :( #cryingallday
@Forster
I was forgetting the score of Cars 2, it was great! They should have nominated it... bad thing they didn't. To Best song too...
