Review: Beauty and the Beast 3D & Tangled Ever After

The Special 3D Edition of Beauty and the Beast arrives in North American theatres tomorrow, with attached short Tangled Ever After, Walt Disney Animation Studio's follow-up to Tangled.

Directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, Tangled Ever After was clearly made with the big screen in mind. The classic, cartoon-style gags are easy to enjoy. A momentary shot of Maximus flying through the air is so ridiculously over the top—I loved it!

Let's hope we see more of these characters.

My only grumble is that the short could have been a lot, lot longer. Actually, the story of Rapunzel and Flynn's wedding (and Max and Pascal's misadventures) could have been told in a different format altogether, like an ABC television special.

When it comes to the feature presentation, the stereoscopic 3-D conversion of Beauty and the Beast unfortunately failed to impress, as did that of The Lion King last fall. Despite my best hopes, the added dimension wasn't for me.

Architecture and landscapes are incredibly immersive, but characters (especially their faces) look flat in comparison. That's a direct result of Beauty being traditionally animated, not CG.

Probably the best thing you can do is forget about the 3-D as much as possible and just enjoy the movie. After twenty years, it's still the greatest animated film ever.

It's a review, therefor opinion. ;) This post is not meant to be news - that's why it's labeled review in the title of the post.

So the short was really that good huh Mike?

By the way, if you ever need a guest writer or help with this blog, I would love to have that opportunity. This is coming from a fellow Ontarian. Cheers.

Yeah, "Lion King" 3D didn't work for me either. I felt slightly dizzy by the end... BUT the joy of seeing it back on the really big screen (it took me back to when I saw it for the first time as a kid) and listening to the gorgeous soundtrack in a huge surround system was enough for me to feel happy. The same reason why I'll probably go watch "Beauty and the Beast".
Plus, it was so funny when I was humming to Hakuna Matata when the 8yr old next to me was doing the exact same thing.
I'm glad to read that "Tangled Ever After" was good! I have high hopes for it..!
Thanks for the review!!! :D

Of course, Beauty and the Beast is currently available on DVD and Blu-Ray right now, so if you want to see it, you can just buy or rent it. There's no reason to go see this thing in theatres.

I hope this is the last hand-drawn animated film that Disney insists on re-releasing in 3D. It's truly terrible.

As for greatest animated film ever? I dunno, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies, Up, WALL-E, The Incredibles...and many more are a lot better, in my opinion.

Beauty and the Beast is a very good movie, but in a lot of ways, is just a very polished telling of the Disney formula. It's quite entertaining, and the characters are very likeable, but there isn't anything terribly unique about the plot, or any deep characterizations.

That said, I'm still a fan of the movie. But I own it on DVD/Blu-Ray, and that's enough for me.

Got some bad news for ya then, they have already announced they will be converting The Little Mermaid.

Personally I'm looking forward to it.

I LOVED The Lion King in 3D. I thought the conversion was amazing and I will be seeing Beauty and the Beast. As for The Little Mermaid in 3D, can't freakin' wait!
