2011 Big Screen Animation Awards—Introduction

It can't be denied: 2011 was a unique year for animation. For the first time in ages, Pixar's release was not met with universal acclaim; live action directors Gore Verbinski and Steven Spielberg made waves with Rango and The Adventures of Tintin, respectively.

This month, I'll be sharing my picks for the best animation achievements of last year in the 1st Annual Big Screen Animation Awards. (I concede the nomenclature is a tiny bit megalomaniacal.)

Presented here is a list of the 2011 animated films I've seen (yes, there were a few I missed), from which winners will be drawn. Festival or limited releases during the calendar year are marked with an asterisk.

Features

The Adventures of Tintin
Cars 2
Kung Fu Panda 2
A Monster in Paris (Un monstre à Paris)*
Rango
Rio
Winnie the Pooh

Shorts

Air Mater
The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore*
Hawaiian Vacation
La Luna*
Pythagasaurus*
Sunday (Dimanche)*
Small Fry
Wild Life*

Six categories, and contenders in each, will be announced next Tuesday, February 7. After some rewatching, I'll reveal my final selections on Sunday, February 12.

Which films will win? And for what? The results may enrage you.

You need to check out Arthur Christmas. And Puss in Boots too.

A dramatic cliffhanger...

I am glued to my seat.

Sunday the twelfth? Yikes, that's over a week of sitting.

Fun times, this seems like a good application of this blog. Question, though... Do the winners win anything? Or are the "awards" just a "best of" list based on your preferences?

They win my recognition :)

I agree with Anonymous 1, you should see Arthur's Christmas and Puss in boots. I would even add Gnomeo and Juliet (wich wasn't that good as a whole but it's worth the look, maybe a technical nod XD dunno) and Happy Feet 2 (Wasn't as bad as I heard, I actually liked it, even though it's not nearly as good as the first one)

Saw all of the mainstream animated films that were released in 2011, and loved the six that you mentioned. You should also check out Puss in Boots and Arthur Christmas, Mike.

Puss in Boots was good although a little uneven, but Arthur Christmas was absolutely amazing. You probably don't need to see Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, unless you are giving out an award for worst of the year...

I'd definitely go for Tintin, but I understand it wasn't to everyone's tastes - I'd love to see Kung Fu Panda 2 get some recognition this year too.

Though it pains me to say it, Cars 2 doesn't really deserve it.

Rango was really good, but I'd say one of the former two I mentioned are far more deserving.

Also, short wise, having not seen La Luna, I'd go for Flying Books - although I Tawt I Taw a Puddy Tat was brilliant.

At last I get to watch some humor in this blog. "The results may enrage you" ... more than likely. I bet you're giving Tintin the 'Best Animated Feature' award. Though you really should've watched Arthur Christmas. The best animated feature of 2011 IMO. Especially because nobody was expecting nothing from it.

It's about Up

I propose the nickname "the Big" for the award, as "the Oscar" is the nickname for "Academy Award of Merit". I'd vote big time for the Big!

Anyway I quote the anonymous. Arthur Christmas can't miss. Also the foreign films A Cat in Paris, Rabbi's Cat, Chico & Rita, Wrinkles and Arrietty. It's not easy being the Big Award :P

I agree that Gnomeo and Juliet, Happy Feet 2, and Puss in Boots all should be checked out - especially for technicals. The texturing on Gnomeo (done at Arc Animation, formally Starz) in Toronto, is really good. Also, the use of Elton John songs is really good, plus the two new songs Hello, Hello and Love Builds a Garden are really worth hearing. Especially the latter which plays over the best scene in the film.

Happy Feet 2 although uneven had a few really good scenes and the song Bridge of Light is worth hearing in film. Puss in Boots, also, had some really good stuff in it.

But, the one that I consider one of the best of the year (right up there with Tintin), is Arthur Christmas. I get that it's not Christmas anymore and a lot of people only like to watch Christmas movies at Christmas, but it really shouldn't be overlooked.

It had one of the sharpest scripts (let alone animated) of the year, with a ton of humour and heart. The animation is amazing, as is the voice acting, and the story turns out really sweet. It is Aardman through and through.

Did you do this just to piss off all of your readers who dislike Mater?

Happy Feet 2 was awful--should've been a direct-to-video release.

@anonymous#7

What the hell are you talking about? This article had absolutely nothing to do with Mater whatsoever.

Well, it's just that Mike has spent so much time defending Mater lately, nominated Cars 2 for best feature, and Air Mater for best animated short.

And Mike said "Which films will win? And for what? The results may enrage you."

He might just give the award to Cars 2 just to annoy his readers.

Then again, he may have the sense to actually award the animated film that he personally enjoyed the most this year, which I'm guessing is Tintin. (and he'll probably award La Luna for best short)

I'd pick Rango or Winnie-the-Pooh, haven't seen Tintin yet, I'm pretty sure any three of those films would make a better choice for best animated short.

I'd pick Rango. In my opinion Tintin is way overrated (not that it's bad, just overrated).

Haters Gonna hate,

Cars 2 wouldn't be that hated if it had been released by other animation studio, so stop HATING...

Cars 2 deserves some recognition

Finn McMissile is one of the greatest characters pixar has ever created, and mater could be annoying for some people, but he is not more stupid than donkey, scratch and many others

Just as you have the right to defend your opinion on Cars 2, people who have expressed massive disappointment have the right to do so also. It upset fans, and Pixar should listen.

Why Did You Leave Out "I Taw I Taw A Putty Tat"? It Was A Short Paired With Happy Feet 2 , Is One Of The CGI Looney Tunes Cartoons That Are Coming Out, And Has The Voice Talents Of Mel Blanc (Yes, THE Mel Blanc) and June Foray. Try To Include "Daffy's Rhapsody" Next Time. It's Being Paired With Journey 2 (I Didn't Know There Was A Journey 1!) And Has The Voice Talents Of Mel Blanc and Billy West (I Think). (Spoiler Alert: Screwball Daffy Is Coming Back!)
