Thanks for nominating "Winnie the Pooh"! I thought it was total robbery that it did not get nominated for the best animated film Oscar.
These would be my choices...
Best Feature Film – Winnie the Pooh
Best Short Film – La Luna
Best Credits – Winnie the Pooh
Best Music – Cars 2
Best New Character - Finn McMissile
Best Voice Acting- Craig Ferguson as Owl in Winnie the Pooh
While I wasn't a fan of Cars 2, I did like Finn McMissile quite a bit. However, surely there are more unique and original character designs out there than throwing 'cars' windshield-eyes onto an Astin Martin?
The design is fine, and the concept worked, but in terms of originality I can think of quite a few characters whose designs impressed me much more than Finn McMissle.
Cars 2 was kind of below-average, but I thought Finn McMissile was really cool, to the point that he redeems some of the movie's weaknesses. The opening scene on the oil rig was an exciting, well-directed action sequence and a great way to introduce the new character. Plus, Michael Caine's voice work just exudes class. I would pick Finn for "Best New Character". Good choice for a finalist. The other real highlight of Cars 2 was Michael Giacchino's soundtrack, so that would be my pick out of your finalists....But no Winnie the Pooh for "Best Music"? As much as I love Giacchino and Pixar music in general, I thought Pooh was even better. The whimsical soundtrack always makes a good listen on a rainy day. The songs for the film perfectly capture the brilliance of the Sherman Brothers’ contributions to the series without sounding like a retread….And no The Ballad of Nessie?
I’m not complaining, though. You’re entitled to your opinion on your own blog. Besides, unlike the “real” award shows, you actually give Winnie the Pooh the recognition it deserves. That makes me happy. Thank you.
My other picks out of your finalists:
Best Short Film: I’ve only seen Hawaiian Vacation, so my pick isn’t much of a pick (but it was really funny, so if you pick it, that would be cool.)
Best Credits: Winnie the Pooh
(That extra scene was hilarious, and the little vignettes made the credits interesting from beginning to end – can’t say that for most movies. The use of the toys was very clever. Plus, “So Long” is a great song!)
Best Voice Acting: Craig Ferguson as Owl, Winnie the Pooh
(Owl was so funny in the movie. The performance was the perfect marriage of character animation to a voice actor)
Best Feature Film: Winnie the Pooh
(surprise, surprise haha)
So excited to see Cars 2 in most of the categories, LOVED IT! And I LOVED Finn McMissle. Amazing character! Hope to see more Pixar related wins :D
In my opinion Winnie the Pooh got WAY more recognition it deserved--and same for Tintin. The *real* finalists are Rango, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Cars 2.
In what world is Cars 2 better than Rango? XD I mean.. c'mon!!
I've got a wild guess: Pixar is going to win Best Short Film. I don't know, just a hunch....
I respectfully have to differ on Winnie the Pooh. Maybe I looked forward to this movie too much, but my entire family found it incredibly disappointing. My 3 and 5 year old children didn't last more than 20 minutes, and they typically sit through movies (for example, they didn't move from their chairs during Cars 2 and Tangled).
It didn't feel original and rehashed many of the old scenarios from past productions (Eeyore lost his tail... Pooh floats away from the bees...). While I didn't want Disney to "modernize" the franchise to the point of ruining its charm, they wasted a chance to put a fresh take on this classic set of characters.
Even though I did like Cars 2 (unlike some others)
I do have to agree that Rango was better... The movie was fantastic and kept me gripped just like Cars 2 did but something about Rango made me like it better.
My vote:
Best Feature - Winnie the Pooh
Best Short Film - (haven't seen two out of three, unable to decide.)
Best Credits - Winnie the Pooh
(Rango was cool, entertaining and eye-catching, but nothing new. Small Fry was new, fun, and funny, but too fast ad crammed to enjoy fully.)
Best Music - (as previous, unable to decide.)
Best New Character - Rango.
(Finn was cool, but seemed to be lacking a bit. Haddock was also an interesting character but also seemed to lack.)
Best Voice Acting - ....I would have picked Haddock if I could have, but given that I can't.... I'll go with James Hong.
Note: Cars 2 should not have been in the Best Music category. Corrected to A Monster in Paris, Rango, Winnie the Pooh.
No Andy Serkis for TinTin?
I wouldn't put Cars 2 in the best Feature Film slot, it's really just meh. I'd pick either Puss'n Boots, Rango or Panda 2.
@Degu, the only world in which Cars 2 ranks better than Rango is the one in Mike's sycophantic Pixar's ass-kissing head.
Now that's more like it, Mike.
Yep, this is confirmation that Mike is just mad at the Oscar nomination list this year. Although I agree that Winnie-the-Pooh should be nominated, I feel like this list is reactionary.
Nope. Most of what you see is what I've been thinking since the fall.
My choices...
Best feature film: Tintin
Best short film: no comment (havent seen alll of them)
Best Credits: not exactly sure what you mean by title design. Either way I vote Rango.
Best Music: Rango
Best new character: Rango (I would have picked haddock but thats an adaptation)
Best voice acting: Craig Ferguson
