"After topping the box office the past two weeks with Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment’s Chris Meledandri, and Audrey Geisel will... begin developing a 3D CG-animated feature based on The Cat in the Hat," reports Deadline.
Geisel, the widow of Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, served as executive producer on The Lorax. (Ted and Audrey in the movie were named after the couple.)
This animated Cat in the Hat would come about a decade after Universal/Imagine Entertainment's critically reviled 2003 live action adaptation.

Oh dear. I'm not looking forward to this.
Well, I guess it could only be an improvement over the live action film. But I think it's safe to say that you can't stretch Cat in the Hat into a feature without drastically altering the feel or atmosphere of the story.
BTW, if anyone here streams Netflix, be sure to check out the British live-on-stage Cat in the Hat that's become recently available. It's amazing, gets every detail right, and features ingenious staging and wonderful actors.
Seriously, I can't imagine anyone doing a finer job.
I'm now wondering how long before someone produces a CGI, padded-out, insult-laden film of P.D. Eastman's Go, Dog, Go!
I actually liked the live-action Cat in the Hat.... it wasn't a genius piece of filmmaking... but it was a fun and twisted romp of good times (for me at least)..... and I'm fine being the only one if it comes to that.
Oh good, Thing 1 and Thing 2 can play the Minions. . .
After seeing 'The Lorax', I think they'll do a good job with 'The Cat in the Hat'. Anything's better than the live-action film.
I Liked The First One. No Improvement Needed. No Offense, But Tell Illumination Studios To Bite On A Doorbell!
Anonymous #2: Don't You Mean The Minions Could Play Thing One And Thing Two? This Guy Is Talking About The Little Gags In The Illumination Studios Logo At The Start Of Their Movies With The Minions. I Think Having Them Be The Minions Is A Great Idea!
What's Next? A Aardman Butter Battle Book Movie? Oh Wait, That Is Coming! No, Seriously. It Is.
Cause if we can destroy one of Seuss' classics, we'll destroy them all. The Lorax was a piece of environmental garbage, destroying the story of the Lorax.
If You Think This Is Bad, Look At stitchkingdom.com And Read About The New Home Alone Movie. Hey, Big Screen Animation! How About Talking About This One. It's Not Animated, But It Has Cartoonish Violence.
Hmmm, so we have animated Cat in the Hat on PBS every day now, and it's pretty good. Will they get Martin Short to do the voice in this new feature?
@Anonymous #3
Illumination reincarnated their 'minions' and their gags into the Barbaloots etc and other animals in The Lorax. So it seems to reason that they would want to adapt The Cat in the Hat so they could do more 'minions' gags, and who more ideal than Thing 1 and Thing 2?
In fact... Illumination adapting Cat in the Hat in the first place seems like an excuse to make a hour and a half long minion-style gag reel.
Oh and slapstick of course.
Anonymous #7- I Meant The Gags With The Minions In The Illumination Studios Logo At The Start Of Their Movies. Despicable Me Was Pretty Standard, Hop Had One Of The Minions In A Bunny Costume, And The Lorax Had One Of The Minions Chop A Tree, Only To Get Squashed By A Barbaloot (Yeah, I Don't Know Why He Was Up There Anyway). In The Cat In The Hat, The Minions Could Pretend To Be The Things. But I Agree With You On What You Said. And Worse, Illumination Studios Is Rebooting Universal's Curious George Movie Series (Oh, No!), Just So They Could Do Even More Minion Like Gags, Like You Said? What's Next? Illumination Studios Presents Daffy Duck? Oh, No! I Jinked It! I Just Hope I Don't Say Anything About A Bearnstien Bear Live Action/ Animated Movie! I Might Jink It Again! (0ne Visit To animatedviews.com Later....) Oh, No! Not Again! I Gotta Get My Mouth Removed! See You Later!
I thought Universal Pictures already did Curious George. If I remember correctly, it's Universal's most recent traditionally animated film. Now Illumination Entertainment's looking to reboot it? Pah. Like I said, the folks at Universal are giving up on hand-drawn animation. C'mon, people, just because other filmgoers see CGI films doesn't mean they're tired of hand-drawn films.
