Walt Disney Animation Studios announced this hour Frozen, its upcoming feature loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's 1845 fairy tale The Snow Queen.
The film, directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan) and produced by Peter Del Vecho (Winnie the Pooh), is slated for release in November 2013 and will be computer-animated. Original songs are being written by Broadway's Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Frozen will star Kristen Bell as Anna, a "young dreamer" tasked with saving her kingdom from the curse of "eternal winter". Teaming up with "daring mountain man" Kristoff (voice TBA), Anna goes on a journey to find Elsa, the Snow Queen (Idina Menzel).

Really not getting back into traditional 2D animation are they? Feels like a long time since Winnie the Pooh and that got buried as we know. Maybe in 2014 they'll have something there on the slate employing the style we love and not bury it behind a huge blockbuster.
Say it loud!
@Mike: Damn right! I just don't think after Princess they had the confidence to make another traditional animated feature properly, I mean Pooh came in under an hour. Under an hour, that's an insult for any supposed theatrical release especially for what should have been a prestige title.
Now, Frozen sounds like the sort of film given the talent attached you'd want to see animated traditionally but the guys upstairs at WDAS simply don't want to take that risk and so we get the safe option. Here's guessing they end up doing a Tangled on it and retrofitting it to appeal to boys for some arbitrary reason.
Yep, I felt this would be a perfect opportunity for a 2D treatment. Oh well, there's always next year (or the year after that, etc.)
Nini: Actually I thought Pooh's running time was perfect.
MIke: I don't disagree, the timing for the sub-hour slot it got given was perfect for the film they built but it still makes me wonder what it was Disney intended for it with such a short runlength.
Mike: The only good thing about Pooh's short runtime was that the movie was lousy, and it didn't take forever to end. Although it still felt like it was dragging. Repetetive storytelling that recycled ideas that were done much better in 'Grand Adventure', poor pacing, weak charecterization and voice acting (Tom Kenny was terribly distracting as Rabbit, Piglet was merely passable, and Jim's losing his grasp on Tigger I'm afraid).
It really was a muddled mess IMO. However, to it's credit, the visuals were wonderful, and the character animation was brilliant in moments and ranged from good to great the rest of the time. Most of the songs were also very well done and elevated the film when they came in, including Zooey's which greatly surprised me. One other aspect I enjoyed was Cleese's narration, I thought he did a grand job filling that role.
Overall, there were a few nice nostalgic moments, but they were not enough to save the film. It could have been so much more, I think. *sigh* Oh well.
Oh yes, the actual point of this post. I must say, I completely agree with the concensus here, I'm very dissapointed that this is going to be CG. I think it would have been wonderful if we got 'Wreck-It Ralph' which lends itself well to CG, and then Snow Queen, which sounds like it would be beautiful animated traditionally. I'm so tired of EVERY mainstream animated film being CG.
Perhaps animator Glen Keane saw the writing on the wall for traditional 2D at Disney, thereby encouraging his departure ahead of time back in March this year.
'Art challenges the technology, technology inspires the art.' As John once so eloquently put it. But Disney are a business with shareholders, therefore making a financial profit trumps both.
I really would have liked to see this in 2D...
I second what other people say about expressing their disappointment that it's not going to be a 2D animated feature....Winnie-the-Pooh was awesome, but where's our next 2D film?!
No Hand drawn? I was FROZEN today!!!!
