Intriguing Teaser for Blue Sky Studios' Epic

Here's the first teaser trailer for Blue Sky Studios' Epic, coming to theatres May 17 May 24, 2013.

Epic looks like it could be good, but I honestly don't know much about it, except that it's based on a 1996 book by William Joyce, The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs.

Joyce, who won an Oscar earlier this year for the short film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, is serving as a writer and executive producer on the movie.

The synopsis from distributor 20th Century Fox reads:
Epic is a 3D CG action-adventure comedy that reveals a hidden world unlike any other. From the creators of Ice Age and Rio, Epic tells the story of an ongoing battle deep in the forest between the forces of good and the forces of evil. When a teen age girl finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag-tag team of fun and whimsical characters in order to save their world…and ours.
Epic is being helmed by Ice Age and Robots director Chris Wedge and features the vocal talents of Beyoncé, Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Knoxville, Steven Tyler, Aziz Ansari, and Jason Sudeikis.

That title is asking for failure. I mean I totally expect yet more middle of the road nothingness from Blue Sky but we've got another Willam Joyce book adap coming out later this year and Joyce's stuff does tend to adapt pretty well to animation so maybe it might work.

Maybe, Blue Sky don't have a track record for "great".

I'd write this off as a Ferngully rip-off, but the actual plot of the movie involves the creatures at war with the Spider-Queen and her goblins. So, less of a nature vs. humans sort of thing, more of an ACTUAL Epic war. It'll be interesting to see how they pull this off, because I adore everything William Joyce.

Worst movie title ever.

Best movie title ever.

Most arrogant movie title ever. Whether this turns out well for Blue Sky or not, the title is doing nothing but trying to make it seem better than it may be. Besides, the title design reminds me of that for A Bug's Life. A lot.

Animated movies that go for the 'epic' avatar and John Carter feel rarely succeed, but this looks beautiful oh well I guess we can only hope for the best.

the animation and the visuals are beautiful but the concept atleast as of now , doesn't make me jump , it feels predictable already . The last time i jumped was for UP i guess :) .

I had an idea like this way back in the early 90s. Watching the trailer, some elements match very closely to what I was imagining for my story, though theirs is an awful lot prettier. Wish I had the wherewithal to actually write it earlier and show it to the right people. Oh well.

Nope, I have to agree with Anon. Unimaginative, uninteresting, difficult for an average Joe to Google. The trailer itself is nice enough, jarring slapstick notwithstanding.

The title is neither here nor there, but personally seems a little to close to Brave to me. I think this looks like a good move for them and the "look" is great. Blue Sky has always been content with low-risk fair and endless sequels to Ice Age that get worse with each version. Though the Lorax was pretty good, it's like someone at the top just hasn't been caring much to make truly great movies. They seriously need to up their game, start caring about story and real/believable characters, like Dream Works has slowly been doing ever since How to Train Your Dragon.

I think that teaser is more effective if they don't include any of that dialogue at the end. It looked really cool and deep until it got to the jokey part with Aziz as a slug.

I understand that it is a kids movie and that there will likely be a lot of jokes like that in the movie. But I doubt many 8-year-old boys watch teaser trailers a year before a movie comes out. I would have been hooked if it was simply battling bugs and tiny people flying through trees with that music. I just feel like that is a more effective teaser than the eyeball joke.

It's Blue Sky, how can this movie end up being good?

while the film does have a neat concept, they could have tried harder for the look. it would have been best to make it more fairytale-esque rather than just add more leafs and leafs and leafs...

@Doug Bowker

The Lorax was an Illumination Entertainment production. Horton Hears A Who was Blue Sky. : )

Terrible teaser!
Horrible music and it's just so boring and long! The CG looks like, 5 years old, don't you think? I mean compared to Brave this looks like its been done by good college students who have exciting potential.
The film might end up being okay but Blue Sky could learn a lot about pitching / marketing.

Awesome teaser, but doomed to dissapoint. The trailer makes it look way cooler and deeper with that music than it's actually going to be

I actually think this looks really good. I don't have a problem with the title and lets not forget this is just a teaser trailer. Perhaps the battle scenes will be EPIC.

I actually prefer Blue Sky to Dreamworks !

Personally, I wasn't too impressed. I like the animation of the mouse and some of the background images, but the humans seemed rather plain in comparison to what we know can be done.

It looks so predictable. Oh, who wants to guess that the girl will end up with that warrior teen? And that title. Unimaginative and doesn't stand out at all. Even with 'Brave,' the title had some resonance. Perhaps it's because 'epic' has been used so much in the common vernacular recently, but it just doesn't have any ring to it when paired with this film.

I'll reserve judgment until we see more, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

I thought Ferngully as well...But we'll have to see. The light coming through the leaves I though looked good though...

Does anyone know what song they used for this trailer?
