I'm trying something new today, taking a look back at a part of animation history many readers might remember: the deluxe VHS releases Disney put out in the early to mid-'90s.
Artist Jerrod Maruyama sent me this photo of his Deluxe Collector's Edition Aladdin VHS set from the Disney Store. It was available for $50 and included the movie (2.0 sound!), soundtrack, 'making of' book and video, lithograph (issue of 35,000), and kids' watch.
Disney released similar special editions of Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. A couple of Disney fans have unboxed them on video here and here.
I remember getting a Bambi VHS with lithograph around 1997. Pity, I was a kid who didn't look after stuff; the litho is likely decomposing in a landfill somewhere.
Depending on reader response, this might become a regular feature. If you have your own cool chunk of animation history lying around, send details along with a good quality picture or two to mail@bigscreenanimation.com for your chance to see it on the blog.

I got hooked on classic Disney shorts on a home video format that was so unpopular that most people don't even know it existed. It was the RCA Selectavision video discs, and my parents had one, along with a few Disney shorts discs. It was like Laserdisc, but more like a vinyl record, and you even had to switch sides!
I still have the Disney discs, I'd be happy to send some pictures in sometime.
Nice! I had the laser disc version of that set. Even though LDs are long obsolete, I've kept the box and disc jacket for that awesome cover art.
Man, I remember when lithograph was such a Disney buzzword. They always intrigued me as a kid. Alas, never had any of these fancy sets though.
Heck, I remember when Disney's lithographs were actually lithographs. Now they just print them out of a computer.
Great post! These sets were always amazing. I have a good collection of their LaserDisc releases. They always went all-out with them. I started collecting them only 2 years ago or so. They're pretty cheap these days, the quality can be almost up to par as a DVD. They're worth it for their exclusive bonus features alone. You'd be shocked to know how much of the exclusive bonus materials that were on the promotional VHS (or especially LaserDisc releases) were never released anywhere else or ported over to DVDs or Blu-rays.
I know this isn't really what this blog may want to be about, but it'd be REALLY interesting to see vintage cels people have collected. Like you said, it's all animation history!
How about the Oscar-winning 1937 animated short film "The Old Mill" ?
This film introduced Disney's technical innovation, the multiplane camera

Mabye you could do a look at deluxe Pixar Laserdiscs and VHS Sets?
While i'm Here, I might want to tell you Something that you could a post on.
When Ice Age 4 comes out On Friday, it will be paired with a Simpsons short called "The Longest Daycare".
By the way, what do you think of The Simpsons?
I remember seeing that Aladdin set, but could never get my parents to splurge for somethingnso pricey. I remember the Fantasia and Beauty and the Beast sets, and wanted BatB for e special work-in-progress version you could only get with that set (and that was shown to critics 70% complete).
I've Been considering exploring on my blog, when the DVD market was starting to put together some really impressive box sets in 1999-2003. Disny was releasing some really great sets like Tarzan, Dinosaur, and even the Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box set, and the Fantasia Anthology.
